Howdy, Jeff, Jeff, and all! Sunday Sunday Sunday! /raceway_park

doctorjazz:

Hmmm, Sunday, not the best time, but there's always the archives...best of luck with the new job, though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am
Jeff Golick:

How do, @listener james!

Sorry to hear that, @doctorjazz, but totally understand. Thanks for well wishes.

Thanks, @duke. I hope so too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am
listener james from westwood:

Yes indeed, congrats on the job! I'm often editing or proofing Sun a.m., but I listen to half my FMU shows on the archives anyway, so happy the show's still a go whenever I listen.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:12am
doctorjazz:

listening to the archives is fine, fills some slots during the week, will miss the Listener Comments thread here, though...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am
Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @listener james. The job is in Mineola, btw, if any of you have some solid Mineola tips.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:14am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

That's a good slot for an alternative to Reggae on the main stream.
Will there be anything here in this slot?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am
listener james from westwood:

Five-hour Nazario Scenario? (crosses fingers)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am
Jeff Golick:

Hey, @RRN63. I don't think anything will be here at 9-12 on Wednesdays right away, though as always, Doug has many shows in the process of coming on-line...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am
Jeff Golick:

I like the way you think, @ljfw.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:19am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am
Jeff Golick:

Anyone want to try and guess the instrumentation on this Quiet cut?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am
listener james from westwood:

I couldn't even begin to guess. Digging it, tho'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am
Jeff Golick:

Weird combo: bass, cello, clarinet, trombone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am
Jeff Golick:

This Širom album can be streamed in full at bandcamp. Click on the album title...

Polyus:

I vote for moving Play Vertigo or Bodega Pop to this slot, because I love them both and don't get to listen much during their current slots. I'm kinda selfish that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am
Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Polyus! I basically feel the same way! As it is, I can NEVER hear Bodega Pop live. BTW, Gary has a great-looking early hip hop show planned for this evening.
Avatar 🥁 9:50am
duke:

I like this Širom . I'll have to listen to rest of the album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am

It's a keeper, @duke.

Nice Berne-was considering going to hear ROVA with John Zorn last night, cold and inertia kept me away...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am

Yeah saw that, too, @doctorjazz. Lot of great stuff in NYC this month.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am
Jeff Golick:

Hi and good morning, @JtotheK!
Thanks, @βrian. But how does one say it?

The great Japanese guitarist Kimio Mizutani on this cut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am
listener james from westwood:

I remember when my first job switched to in-house layout for its books and journals, and we had a devil of a time trying to generate the š for one author's name. We almost had to recruit the production editor with the steadiest hand to draw it in, before someone finally figured it out (well before Google would've had a solution on tap).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am
Jeff Golick:

He said "no."
Avatar 10:11am
βrian:

No idea how to pronounce it, but I do know this: "Sampling and wrapping delicate pastels requires cool music listening, because it seems to be a fragile structure blow at any moment."
Avatar 10:12am

(Thanks, Google Translate)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am

Avatar 10:26am
northguineahills:

what do you know, there he is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am
Jeff Golick:

@Doug: though to be fair to DJ Casequarter, he did straddle Sat. and Sun.
  10:28am
Doug Schulkind:

"Yabby" always makes me think of Fred Flintstone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am
Jeff Golick:

The great and under-heard cornet/trumpet player Olu Dara on this cut.
Avatar 10:41am
Jeff J:

Olu Dara left the jazz scene for a while to play more mainstream blues and had a few solo albums where he sang. I believe he also plays sitting down which might explain being under-noticed.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:42am
doctorjazz:

Didn't Olu Dara decide he wanted to be a guitar playing pop singer at some point? Did used to like listening to him when he was a jazzman. Nice to hear Pullen, he is amazing, was prominent for a while (especially in the great quartet wiith George Adams), don't hear him so much any more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am
Jeff Golick:

It's like Erroll Garner x Cecil Taylor = Don Pullen.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:50am
doctorjazz:

With maybe a touch of avant garde Liberace (the dissonant slides feel a bit that way)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am
Jeff Golick:

YES.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am
Jeff Golick:

Jaki Byard was good at playing the piano.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:54am

As was Phineas, two great keyboard ticklers.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:56am

And Newborn is like Oscar Peterson with more soul...

(Getting in extra posting-?too much?- since I may not be able for the Sunday show...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am
Jeff Golick:

NEVER too much, @doctorjazz. Fire away!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am
listener james from westwood:

doc, I'm the same way during Simpsons Time, so you're cool from my side!
  11:22am
Polyus:

It's weird, Tibbetts is from my town, I know people who have played with him, and yet you never ever hear about him. No live performances, nothing. Kind of a hermit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
Jeff Golick:

Huh. If your ball goes on his lawn, does he whack it with a rake and then shout, "This is mine now!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am
Jeff Golick:

PROGRAMMING NOTE: You've heard of "fatback?" Amanda's got some CATback happening over at the Scenario, coming up at noon:

Anyone get in to Laura Cantrell/Michael Shelly Saturday night? Was a great show, best $10 I've spent in a while!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: That line is so good you should def bring it over to the next playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
