The manic collage-y nature of this Chadbourne tape makes it tough to do blow-by-blow tracklisting, so I'm wimping out -- but you can follow along here, should you wish: www.discogs.com...

History's weird. Agnew was alive and (as) well (as can be) in '85, didn't die until '96. For some reason I imagined him long gone by the time of this tribute.

Get with the program, Carmichael. This is the wave of the future! Now, everybody kneel and pay homage to our lord and savior, Sir Tim Berners-Lee. He woulda kicked Gutenberg's ass.

he just mixed in some Prince Far I dub during this "rugged sports" bit. Ha.

Hi, Mark! I was wondering what that was!!
  12:24pm
Mark Williams:

hey Tony. Sorry for the long absence. Work... yeah it's from Cry Tuff 3. Steve Beresford played on portions of that, interestingly enough.
  12:26pm
Dean:

See the link to discogs Tony provides to this cassette, the image of the tape and the typed notes. There's reference to a "Mondale/Van Halen duo," "Elvis Presley, rap," etc.

Shit, I thought there were 8! You're 8 and your collection is 9, then.

That's why they're called "wonders." You're never certain how many there are.

Lemme direct your attention to a post by a friend who ordinarily blogs about law and philosophy stuff. Here he takes an interesting detour: http://leiterreports.typepad.com/blog/2016/01/the-best-late-60searly-70s-rock-n-roll-album-youve-never-heard-of.html

Don't know that Universe -- tho I like the American band of the same name: rateyourmusic.com...
  1:12pm
Dean:

I don't know the latter, but "progressive rock" is compelling. In fact, the Polish Universe resembles a contemporaneous German prog band, Epitaph. Leiter is right, too, that they sound like early Tull. Weirdly, on the day before Leiter posted this I listened to "Stand Up" for the very first time in my life.
Avatar 1:14pm
Tony Coulter:

A Costes/Chadbourne collaboration would be quite a thing to behear, methinks....
  1:14pm
Dean:

Behear now.
Avatar 1:16pm

"Stand Up" is my fave Tull album, I think.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
coelacanth:

hey Tony, how do you compare jethro tull's "this was" and "benefit" to "stand up"? This Was,together with Aqualung (even despite its overplayedness and commercial acceptance) are my 2 favorite 'tull albums; but i acquired stand up & benefit right as i was diving into punkrock, so they never got comparable attention.
Avatar 1:40pm
Tony Coulter:

I like Benefit too -- probably my second favorite. I also like Aqualung, but the radio overplay does get in the way.... "This Was" I haven't heard in years.
Avatar 1:44pm
Tony Coulter:

I wonder if Chadbourne has ever covered any Jethro Tull numbers....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
coelacanth:

thanks! benefit and this was are here. 'give 'em a spin later. (stand up in storage, not in alphabetical order)...i remember loving "this was".
...did Chadbourne cover songs? i only caught the tail-end of that tape.
Avatar 1:50pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah, there were some drive-by covers in there -- and on most of his albums.
Avatar 1:52pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Tony! This is some wackadoo scene
Avatar 1:53pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Flash Strap! Calmness and order will be restored with today's last tape (the Steve Roden one)
  1:56pm
Dean:

No love for "Thick As a Brick" or "Passion Play"? I don't know them, but I wonder...
Avatar 1:58pm
Tony Coulter:

Never warmed up to either -- but I'm open to the idea that one day they'll grab me.
  1:58pm
Dean:

In any event, listen to Universe. The last track, a 1970 acetate, includes a riff on one of Holst's "Planets."
Avatar 2:00pm
Tony Coulter:

Will do. Here be the other Universe: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm
coelacanth:

i like thick as a brick, but it's a big step down from aqualung,in my opinion; and each album to follow a step down from the previous one...then,for some reason, i like "songs from the wood"! it's very "pop" but the arrangements are excellent.
Avatar 2:02pm
Tony Coulter:

So maybe this French side of the Costes tape is basically the same (text-wise) as side A, but with some twists here and there. Dunno....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm
coelacanth:

i'm getting that impression too.

Hello Tony!
Sound Of Pig ... Al Margolis ... you know him in person, right?
I have this Blah Blah Blah, also the golden record.
Any idea who this is?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm
coelacanth:

i recognise all 3 of these names, but i don't know where from.
  2:08pm
Dean:

It would help if Tull would produce a box set of early releases, maybe up to PP. I'd buy it, maybe. I'm loving the Hawkwind set of early stuff through "Hall of the Mountain Grill." It includes the Greasy Truckers Party material, which I once had on vinyl, but no more.
Avatar 2:08pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks for that link, Jeff! My impression is that Roden is better known in the "art" world than in the music world....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm

This was my sole Tull jam: en.wikipedia.org... - total neophyte.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm
Guido from Cologne:

If Sound Of Pig did not release Amy Denio's tapes, I never would have been introduced to one one of my most favorite ever performers. Unbelievabe, Amy says those "cheesy" tape releases kind of hepled to kick her profesional career.
Avatar 2:16pm
Tony Coulter:

For some stupid reason, I didn't keep my Amy Denio tapes, much as I like her -- wish I had. Some of that stuff was reissued on CD, though....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
Rich in Washington:

I think Amy's put a lot of her stuff on BandCamp, if that's yr cup o' tea....
Avatar 2:19pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Ya know, it kind of isn't. Not because I'm a format snob, but simply because I tend to lose track of my digital-only music. I need tangible packaging for something to make an impression on my poor brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm
Guido from Cologne:

The CD reissues are definetely top-notch sound-wise.
Guess the original reel-to-reel masters must have been pretty good already.
Just the artwork sufferes.
Yes, on Bandcamp she returs to her old multi-track-way-of working from the 80ies.
