Talking of prog: the first hour or so of today's show will mostly be experimental type stuff, but after that there will be lots of prog (and psych).

The discogs bio for Martin Burlas (on now) is rather odd: "His last works are mostly based on combination of easy listening of the 60’s tradition with electronic minimalism and seems to be rather emotionally soft. Not very expressive means are used in his works." I'm guessing he wrote it himself.

It's quite a good album. The cover kind of makes it look like a Mothers of Invention record -- and, in fact, there are some parallels. www.discogs.com...

Had the original years ago, but stupidly sold it.

It really is amazing how many Magma-inspired bands there are -- dozens, at least.

Magma's coming to town again, I see.

MrFab:

Wassup, y'all!

Yeah, there's a self-identified 'zeuhl' band here in LA - but they're only a duo. Doesn't the definition demand a vocal choir?
Avatar 1:22pm
Tony Coulter:

Yep -- in March. I'm definitely going -- they were great last time.
Avatar 1:22pm
Tony Coulter:

Here's that prog I promised you all.
Avatar 1:23pm

Heya, Fab! Don't need a vocal choir to be a zeuhl band, I don't think. Definitely do need a throbbing bass, though....

Speaking of psych, I'm always on the lookout for Bonzo-esque nonsense from the hippie era. individual tracks, as I don't expect too many other entire bands devoted to such silliness. Any ideas, Tony (or anyone)?

Hampton Grease band may have what you are looking for MrFab

yes, I've known about 'em for a while and for some reason have never gotten around to checking 'em out. They got compared to Beefheart, always a plus in my book.

VG checking in - ready to smash up a few things!

Mr Fab - Early Mothers of Invention albums fit the bill of being Bonzos like! - prune juice for everyone!

Morgan (on now) was led by Morgan Fisher ... of Hybrid Kids fame .. and of Mott the Hoople. Talk about a varied resume!

I think Fisher became a Sanyasin and did New Agey music for a spell, to fill out his resume even further.
Not sure what he's doing now. I sure love his stuff, esp. Hybrid Kidz, his Miniatures compilations, etc.
  2:02pm
Dean:

I often confuse Morgan Fisher with Matthew Fisher. I would have sworn Matthew also lead a proggy eponymous group post-Procol Harum.

@ MrFab: Here's a tasty Polish Bonzoid outfit: rateyourmusic.com...
Avatar 2:04pm
VANDALISM GENERATOR:

Also Mr Fab - I would check out -
Family - Music in a Dolls House;
July - 1st album - a still unknown psyche classic with a few Bonzo like touches here and there.
Audience - 2nd and 3rd album - a bit heavier than the Bonzos but some whimsical inventive stuff!
Avatar 2:05pm
Tony Coulter:

These guys too (also Polish): rateyourmusic.com...
Avatar 2:06pm
VANDALISM GENERATOR:

Mr Fab - the first two Soft Machine albums (before they went all Miles runs the voodoo down) are chock full of whimsical psyche and funny wordplay!
Avatar 2:08pm
Tony Coulter:

Those two Polish outfits are Bonzoid in that they wackify and surrealicize trad jazz.
Avatar 2:10pm
VANDALISM GENERATOR:

Tony - Blue men sing the whites!
Avatar 2:11pm
VANDALISM GENERATOR:

not too many tongue in cheek bands around - how about the Rezillos from the punk era!
Avatar 2:12pm
VANDALISM GENERATOR:

Caravan's shorter songs on the 1st 3 albums are bonzoid!

this is getting a bit soft machine third!

Also a bit Tony Williams/ Larry Young-esque. But, strangely, it's Santana!

do you have the original Lotus album with all the bits and pieces weird art work?
  2:16pm

Thanks guys, did not know that stuff. *puts on miners helmet* Time to start digging. And diggin'.

Mr Fab: The two Hatfield and The North albums also have a touch of that early Softs ridiculousness and whimsy.

Hi Tony! As always, wondering "where does he find all this stuff?"!
  2:34pm
MrFab:

"Songs the Bonzos Taught Us" is indeed wonderfully wonderful. Actually, these Studs are pretty silly they own selves.
Avatar 2:34pm
VANDALISM GENERATOR:

sorry Mr Fab - just remembered Tea and Sympathy - An Asylum for the musically insane is very Bonzoid!

I've been listening to that Songs the Bonzos Taught Us album quite a bit lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

I heard a Gong track I'd somehow never heard before the other day. Chris M played "Ooby-Scooby Doomsday or The D-day DJ's Got the D.D.T. Blues" (an outtake from the Angels Egg sessions) on his show. Very silly indeed!

I'd say there's still plenty of Bonzoid ridiculousness being produced over here, but it's all *very* underground, unlikely to get as far as the Superbowl halftime show! When John Peel was alive, he always seemed to find and celebrate that stuff (Half Man Half Biscuit and I Ludicrous come to mind). He's missed...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm
Rich in Washington:

2nd Half Man Half Biscuit! I think they're brilliant. Another group I quite like, in a gentler, loony way, Jazz Butcher (Conspiracy, et al).
