Greetings, all! For today's installment of guess-the-LP-under-the-cassettes I've lobbed you an easy one. First person to ID the LP wins an all-expenses-paid trip to Flumdiddle.

This Brume cassette comes with a booklet not shown in my photo: www.discogs.com...

@ TC - wait till I tell the wife I won a vacation! Whoopie!

Tony Coulter:

In my photo, the Brume cassette is the one with the attached coin, of course. Don't think most copies came with the coin -- I'm a lucky devil, I guess.
Avatar 12:13pm
Tony Coulter:

However, I did not get the "small bag of herbs" mentioned in the discogs description.

Kay:

What's the type of coin is that? 10 Piastres?
Avatar 12:23pm
Tony Coulter:

Not sure if you all can tell on the other end of this computer thingee, but this Brume cassette has unusually good fidelity (for a cassette, that is).
Avatar 12:25pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Kay: You know, my first impulse is to say it's a French coin, and I know I've held just such a coin in my sweaty palm -- but now I'm not completely sure. It's glued to the cassette, so I can't flip it around to check.

I get to listen in today

Tony Coulter:

Heya, Gary! Glad you could make it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
Gary:

Can I ask a totally stupid question? Where do you get the tapes? Are these part of a vast collection you've had since the 70s-80s or are there places you go to find them now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
Rich in Washington:

It looks like a 10 pfennig piece to me but maybe I am wrong. I think I have a couple in a random pile o' coins I have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
Gary:

And I'm not asking you to reveal any secrets -- just curious, because I rarely see tapes anywhere
Avatar 12:32pm
Tony Coulter:

Definitely not a stupid question. Some of the cassettes I've had since the '80s, others I bought recently on discogs, eBay, or from a few stores here in Portland that actually sell the things. The Brume cassette on now I found -- believe it or not -- at a Park Slope stoop sale around 10 years ago.
Avatar 12:34pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: You're probably right. I just know it's a coin from a country I've been in, pre-euro.
Avatar 12:41pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Gary: I've also been lucky enough, since starting Tape Hiss, to have people give me cassettes. Plus, I trade for 'em with various fellow music obsessives.
Avatar 12:44pm
Tony Coulter:

Or maybe it's a 10 lira coin: www.google.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
Gary:

Ah, cool -- and, you know, I'm not surprised about the Park Slope stoop sale. There was one interview with the filmmaker/performance artist Jack Smith that had eluded me for more than a decade ... and where did I finally find it? At a stoop sale in Park Slope.

Turning you up LOUD so I can hear you from the kitchen while I start slow-cooker chili!
Avatar 12:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Update: That coin is definitely Italian. Took a closer look with my glasses off (I'm one of those) and it says "Romagnoli" on it in small letters.
Avatar 1:03pm
Tony Coulter:

Following up on Gary's "where do the cassettes come from" question, there are distributors who carry deadstock of old cassettes, such as this fine Italian distributor, from which I got today's other two cassettes: www.soundohm.com

Yo, Coutler-oids!
If you're ever in LA, Amoeba Hollywood has cassette tapes in their "Unusually Experimental" section.

There's a definite chance I'm messing up the live tracklisting for this Det Wiehl cassette -- the listed times do not match up at all. Apologies if so....

Here's a silly Oregon Public Broadcasting piece about the fact that one of my local record stores carries cassettes: www.opb.org...
Avatar 1:42pm
Tony Coulter:

Of course, it's easy enough to find new cassette releases. The trick is finding good old ones from the original cassette-underground era.
Avatar 1:45pm
Tony Coulter:

There's definitely a bit of a Residents influence going on in this tape, I'd say....
Avatar 1:49pm
northguineahills:

I didn't start collecting music (or developed a decent ear for it) until I was a junior in high school around '92-'93. I still have a crap ton cassettes, but for the smaller labels and underground ones, Probably only 20% would qualify, and most I either got at shows since then or the few record stores that sold them. I have found a handful of older cassettes at record stores and maybe 7 older ones at stoop sales/thrift stores.
Avatar 1:54pm
Tony Coulter:

I've occasionally found good cassettes in thrift stores as well, including two old R. Stevie Moore tapes. Not too long ago I found a really great sound poetry tape in a Seattle Goodwill -- will play it here soon.
Avatar 2:01pm
northguineahills:

I found a Steven Fisk cassette at a thrift store in Florida. Had no idea who he was at the time, I just noticed it was on SST, and damn, it was a good one!
Avatar 2:11pm

"448 Deathless Days," I'm guessing? That is a great one.

This is the ICU that made the K recs ICU change their name to IQU (Just a guess), not that they were sued, they just found out their name wasn't unique.
Avatar 2:39pm
Tony Coulter:

Talking of people generously giving me cassettes for use on this show, last year someone gave me a HUGE batch of modern (i.e., from the last 10-15 years) noise cassettes. I'm s-l-o-w-l-y making my way through them, and sooner or later will feature the best ones here.
Avatar 2:55pm
Tony Coulter:

Turns out I'll have to fade this last track out -- it's long, and there just isn't enough time left to let it play through. Sorry to have broken the cardinal rule of this show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm

Excellent fading, Tony! And great show today - thanks!

Better to fade out the tape than to have it hit that autostop thing. That used to wake me up.
