JB had a ton of great records. Listen to one of the anthology collections and it's like getting punched in the face by funk every step of the way. He also had some more bluesy tracks earlier on that were pretty great. I have a 45 of him doing a solid version of Kansas City. Plus his live records are amazing. So much energy.

@P-90 Very equinox-y. White roses starting to bloom, scent of honeysuckle and orange blossoms.

Gaylord, Chris: in the UK here. On one hand, we're told JB is the first and last word, and on the other hand, we only hear these same half-dozen tracks. Which are now so advertising-imbued, they feel more like part of the problem. Live at the Apollo? Got it out the library once. One of the great holy texts, right? Hmph. I reckon his confected symbolic value greatly outweighs his music. A bandleader with good taste.
Please, someone prove me wrong about all this.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
Caryn:

I can't remember who it was that said that JB's band sound was designed so that every instrument was played as if it was percussion. Made me relisten to a lot of his stuff in a different way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
patrick321:

@foofs "Star Time" 4-CD set, late 1950s thru 1970s, may be the greatest bargain in musical history. I'm sure it's available in UK at a similar price: www.amazon.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
Rhody Chris:

I could see (hear?) that argument. The horns and strings are usually very punchy like percussion.
Avatar 5:37pm
cory:

black dynamite is so good
  5:38pm
P-90:

@Caryn: yes, JB's band(s) are famous for their unique, distinctive style. Part of that sound was a very staccato, percussive way of playing almost everything. Every note was played right at the front of the beat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm
Rhody Chris:

Patrick - that set was my intro to JB. When I was a kid my dad played that thing on repeat it seemed. We listened to records and CDs all day every weekend and I remember hearing that more than anything besides maybe the Good Morning Vietnam soundtrack.

I second the recommendation of James Brown's "Star Time" box set. Great tunes and a crash-course in JB's music. There are a few live tracks from an unreleased 1971 show in Paris. Demand for the full concert was so huge that Polydor released it a few months later ["Love Power Peace: Live at the Olympia, Paris 1971"].
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Probably no one can be said to have ever created a whole kind of Music all by themselves - but James Brown I think comes closer than anyone.
  5:45pm
P-90:

JB would talk about playing "on the one", meaning he expected his band to emphasize the first beat in each measure.
Avatar 5:46pm
geezerette:

@foofs:That's great! (:c)
