Joe has GIRL TROUBLE? Who would of guessed !!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm
Irwin:

Today's show synopsis: After Joe breaks up with his trophy girlfriend, an actress named Kate, he explains how he got involved with Kate in the first place. He then discloses unsavory incidents with other women that foreshadowed why his relationship with Kate was doomed, and invites listeners to pass judgment on his creepy behavior.

my first experience with Joe Frank followed falling asleep with radio on and then becoming conscious of this very weird story (along the lines of today's plot) being told (in my dreams?...) I highly recommend near dream state listening, but that first time will be hard to replicate...

I dunno - I'd kind of prefer a Muzak treatment of Zappa.

sounds like music experiencing an identity crisis.

Stefan Scheib. A curious little man. Stood around 4' 11" as I recall. Prince tried to get him in the New Power Generation back in the day. I know, because I was IN the NPG for a short time, though they kept me backstage and out of sight due to my advancing age. Scheib refused to play with Prince because TAFKAP was too tall. Instead, Scheib joined up with Ready For The World, which further enraged the purple one. Scheib bottomed out in the early oughts, running monitors for Puddle of Mudd before he bailed out of the business completely. At least, this is what I've been told. I may be wrong. Stories are fluid in the music business. Truth is relative.

Alison Porchnik:

Lyle, wasn't Stefan Scheib the estranged son of auto paint and body Earl Scheib?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
Irwin:

Lyle: Your recollection is accurate. Did you write the wiki entry on Scheib? He started with a horn band called Creature Comforts in the early '70s.
  3:44pm
Lyle:

That's an urban myth, Alison. Wholly untrue. Earl Scheib is, however, the inspiration of Gene Chandler's Duke of Earl song. Evidently Earl Scheib's first auto paint job (then $9.99) was Chandler's 1962 Pontiac Tempest.
  3:49pm
Lyle:

Ha! Creature Comforts. That's another story entirely. Originally fronted by Carly Simon, who promptly bailed and joined Elephant's Memory. Creature Comforts soldiered on for another few years until they teamed up with Barry DeVorzon to write "Theme From Swit," an homage to the MASH actress who was popular at that time. Rhythm Heritage stepped in and changed the song to Theme from SWAT, and Creature Comforts didn't make a dime for their efforts. They disbanded days later after a physical altercation in a Denny's parking lot in Encino.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
Irwin:

Nunnally Parker of Terrible Trouble was in Creature Comforts for about three minutes. There were body odor issues, acc. to a 1989 retrospective interview in Rolling Stone.

Whooda:

Lyle, that is fabulous trivia about Earl Sheib and his famous (infamous) car painting services. Incredible coincidental this morning I was running questions to myself about "Duke of Earl" song, specifically as free association between Duke of Earl, Earl of Sandwich and Sandwich of the month. Too weird to be real.
  3:59pm
Lyle:

The funny thing, Irwin, is that the odor issues were not "body" related, but rather stemmed from Parker's profuse use of Hai Karate - from what I've been told.

There were lots of colognes we favored back then. I liked Canoe. I remember the night Tommy Dorsey made the switch from Old Spice to British Sterling. He was sure something good was bound to happen, yet, there he was at 2am back at the Hotel Chesterfield, watching Sea Hunt and knocking back a bottle of Kentucky Gentleman. The music life is often not as glamorous as one might think.
