The Andy Breckman Seal of Approval. Can't tell if it's sincere or sarcastic, though. (I presume that's Andy Breckman...the signature isn't entirely readable.)
Avatar 3:16pm Wild Neil:

Peace Irwin and everybody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm AnAnonymousParty:

Is this the same Alan that played with Allan?
  3:22pm Dean:

Yeah, Holdsworth.
  3:24pm Dean:

Also worked quite a bit with the Cline brothers.
Avatar 3:34pm geezerette:

Irwin I LOVE Moondog!!! Irwin ,who even mentions Moondog, you are incredible man!
  3:34pm Nanker de Tucson:

Marysville, KS : Not sure if still this way, but it used to be a haven for retired circus performers. Some interesting patrons in local bars, diners, parks, etc . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm AnAnonymousParty:

Yeah, I really enjoyed the Live at Yoshi's DVD.
  3:37pm MONEYBAG$:

This song makes me think of Daria
Avatar 3:37pm Cheyenne:

Irwin, I already know you'll never be my woman
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Irwin:

I can try, Chey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Man! Stashu played this the other night. I don't think I had heard it since it came out.
  3:38pm Dean:

Seconded, @AnAnonymousParty.
  3:39pm MONEYBAG$:

It also reminds me of the Jandek chestnut, "if you want to know why I'm a man, it's because I don't want to be a woman"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm JP from KC:

Jesus, what a day. Just tuning in, Irwin. Saw you replied to my email, but haven't had the chance to look at it. Thanks for getting back to me, though!
Avatar 3:49pm Wild Neil:

@Irwin-I have NEVER HEARD of this West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. Cool! THIS is why I listen to WFMU. Thanks!
  3:56pm Listening Out There:

Speaking of Raymond Scott, Mr. Host Sir, I saw your name in the credits for "Best of Enemies," since you do some of the rights wranglin' for Scott music, right? Good documentary...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Irwin:

Terrific movie, LOT. They used Scott's "Portofino" under the opening credits. Highly recommended viewing.
  4:00pm Listening Out There:

Ah. It was hidden under the opening credits! No wonder I couldn't remember where in the heck it was...
Avatar 4:02pm geezerette:

You guys into Carl Stalling too? We go to the desert and listen to Carl Stalling while we watch the wildlife. Not kidding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm doctorjazz:

Great sets so far!
Avatar 4:03pm geezerette:

Great band!
Avatar 4:06pm geezerette:

This show is Heaven!
  4:08pm Dean:

The desert rabbits, roadrunners, coyotes, pigs, and ducks...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm JP from KC:

@Geezerette: Had to look up Carl Stalling, as I thought I wasn't familiar. Turns out I've been listening to him for years and didn't know it!
Avatar 4:09pm geezerette:

@ Dean: Exactly! Except for ducks.
  4:10pm Dean:

No ducks?! Dethpicable!
Avatar 4:11pm Wild Neil:

A song about hypergamy-"she marry a richer man". Heh!
Avatar 4:11pm geezerette:

@JP: Isn't Stallings great?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Parq:

Geezerette @4:02 -- that sounds like a little piece of heaven.
Avatar 4:14pm geezerette:

@Parq: Absolutely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm JP from KC:

So great! I've always loved that music. I just never thought to find out who it was!
Avatar 4:19pm Wild Neil:

@Geezerette-does the wildlife start to synchronize actively with the music like the music is causing the action or is it more subtle than that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm JP from KC:

Follow-up to Neil's question: Is there mescaline involved?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm JP from KC:

Ha! Just realized I made a crack about drugs at 4:20. How serendipitous.
Avatar 4:25pm Wild Neil:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Matt F:

I was fixing to play this very track on my show tomorrow and I didn't even know it was Ellington's birthday. Not fooling!
Avatar 4:26pm geezerette:

@ Wild Neil: It synchs up but music is not animating it,just being compatible.
It's life so it's already animated.
Avatar 4:28pm Wild Neil:

@Geezerette-cool! I hope you bring binoculars...
Avatar 4:29pm geezerette:

@JP: Just high on life and blinding white light. :)
Avatar 4:31pm geezerette:

@Wild Neil: 8c)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Irwin:

Matt5: All your Basie belong to us. Ellingtunez 2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm JP from KC:

@Geezerette: In all seriousness, though, that sounds wonderful. I've never been to the desert, but I'd like to. It's always been a dream of mine to go on a vision quest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm JP from KC:

Either that, or to attend Burning Man...
Avatar 4:37pm Wild Neil:

The desert near Las Cruces, NM is sublime as its a mile high...very very cool after a rain you can smell the greasewood.
  4:40pm Laura L:

Work, work, work... but a quick note to say thx for the excellent Duke this afternoon, Irwin.
Avatar 4:41pm Fredericks:

Thought the first part sounded like an uptight Arkestra. This sounds like thee Arkestra.
Avatar 4:42pm Fredericks:

Not this. This is Egg.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Irwin:

LL: Quit yer stinkin' job. Slack off. Sleep life to the fullest.
  4:46pm Laura L:

Ok, but only since you said to.
Avatar 4:52pm Fredericks:

Could play the Ellington simultaneously, Irwin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Michael 98145:

what a sweet version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm chris:

this is nice
  4:58pm Listener Robert:

I'm almost weeping. Very moving.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...like Blossom Dearie
...yeah okay he wrote good too...
  5:00pm frenchee:

me too! Beth sounds fantastic.
  5:01pm Listener Robert:

This shows the paradox of a big production: Everything you add takes something away, because one's att'n can hold only so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Irwin:

Beth is a big fan of Blossom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yup! Demos often better! ...sketches not paintings...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm officina:

Thanks for the Beth S. Irwin. Gorgeous... She needs to release something soon. Suddenly Tammy is too far back now....
  5:03pm Listener Robert:

Makes me wonder if "Nothing Compares" would be even more moving without ANY music. And in a speaking rhythm rather than a poetic one.

The point being, if it's art, then it's not real.
  5:04pm Listener Robert:

But if it weren't art, and it was just someone we were eavesdropping on, say via a phone tap, would we even pay att'n?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Nietzsche: Art is better than Life...That's why we keep him around...he bowls good too - 'specially on Thoirsdays...
Wull - let Joe Frank set 'em up & we'll found out...
  5:05pm Listener Robert:

We'd probably pay att'n if it were somebody we ALREADY cared about, but it probably wouldn't GRAB us as strangers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...an 'intimate' song...
  5:09pm Listener Robert:

That really got me thinking. For the past week, starting for reasons I don't remember, I've been listening & watching videos of performances or productions of "The Dream Police" over & over. Would I pay att'n if it were some lunatic on the street -- which role Richard Neilsen plays very well -- saying exactly the same thing?
  5:12pm burpage:

ah frank thanks irwin
  5:13pm Listener Robert:

I don't think I would pay att'n to such a thing. But it's a great musical composition, and it may help that the lyrics are pure fiction to keep the audience from being repelled by the whole thing. So making things UNreal can get us to listen & watch, so we don't have to be bothered by our rxn if it were a true story.
Avatar 5:14pm Fredericks:

This sounds like Beefheart unplugged.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...1st guitar a 2nd-hand acoustic falling apart on which had been written in ballpoint pen 'C-Am-F-G7'...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Mike East:

Irene played a killer Zappa set last night. Making me think I gotta get more Zappa...but where to start?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Spankyflop:

Start at the beginning wtih Freak Out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Irwin:

Irene played a Zappa set for the same reason I'm playing one now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Read 'Zappa: Negative Dialectics of Poodle Play'. It's only 621 pages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Irwin:

This Scrawl album was recorded at Paisley Park Studios.
  5:32pm Listening Out There:

For more Zappa, "Hot Rats," of course...
  5:34pm Listener Robert:

This is much better than the hard, allegro version that usu. gets played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Irwin:

Hot Rats is a great place to start for a taste of Zappa as a composer and arranger, without the groupie gags and vaudeville sthick.
  5:37pm Listening Out There:

Hot Rats just came to mind since I read a great account by Max Bennett, who played bass on the session. Bennett was a regular in the Wrecking Crew (session musicians). Well, that, and it's prob my favorate Zappa album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Irwin:

"Peaches en Regalia" is absolute genius. Stunning arrangement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Mike East:

will check out Hot Rats. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Irwin:

Just don't start with "Willie the Pimp" from HR. Atypical of the album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Mike East:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Michael 98145:

Wow. I never realized the Byrd's "I Wasn't Born to Follow" was written by CAROLE KING, GERRY GOFFIN.
Avatar 5:48pm Jeff:

Yeah, I've always admired Zappa for his smarts and musicianship but been turned off by the dumb leering potty humor I kept hearing. I should find my way through that minefield to identify the pieces I actually like.
  5:50pm miketp:

Hello everybody. I'll chime in with a Zappa lp I really love. WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH.
  5:51pm Laura L:

To quote Andy, Great show, Irwin.
  5:52pm Listening Out There:

Hope John Fogerty gets royalties from "Discoteque"...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Irwin:

LL: He was so prescient!
  5:54pm Laura L:

It's uncanny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Irwin:

I mean, how did he KNOW?!!??
  5:57pm Laura L:

This is the proof--Andy knows way more than he lets on!
