Hello Jeff and D:Oers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am doctorjazz:

Really "out" this weekend, visiting my daughter in college. Crummy Wi-Fi in the hotel, have to catch up with the archive. Enjoy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am listener james from westwood:

Ahoy there, Jeff and all!
Avatar 9:07am hyde:

gimme some music to pack the car by!
Avatar 9:09am holland oats:

congliptiously yours d:o!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Jeff Golick:

Ooofa! Sorry for the late start and welcome welcome welcome, @duke, @doctorjazz (in absentia), @listener james, @hyde (where to?), @holland oats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Stanley:

I'm in for OUT for a change.
Hi Jeff, everyone.
Avatar 9:12am hyde:

@Jeff nothing exciting. just the weekly trek back to upstate ny from massachusetts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Stanley!

@hyde: was in Mass. myself last weekend. North Shore.
Avatar 9:16am hyde:

it's pronounced Nohth Shoaa
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am doctorjazz:

Got the pop up to work, listen for a short while. Man, this guitar tune is gorgeous!.
Pop up player comes and goes...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Jeff Golick:

oh don't I know it, @hyde - that was my home base for the first 18 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: agreed. I think we could do a whole show (or premium?) of just Naima variations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Jeff Golick:

Just activated the "new" column for the first time ever. Do folks find that a useful/innocuous/annoying aspect of playlists?
Avatar 9:21am hyde:

ah, i knew you had lived in Mass.@Jeff, but I dinna know you were a totally native Bay Stater.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Jeff Golick:

It's wicked true.
Avatar 9:23am hyde:

i am pro-"new" column, myself
Avatar 9:27am hyde:

i listened to the archive of Bryce's last show yesterday. Three hours. Six tracks. That's gotta be some kind of record?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Jeff Golick:

....could be! Gotta check that out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am doctorjazz:

I'll vote yes on the "new" column...hardly ever see it active on fmu. Like all the information I can get...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Jeff Golick:

Cool on the "new." Thx.
  9:32am Dean:

Re: "New" column, I think it's redundant with Year column. Reissues could be noted as, e.g., 2016/1980, because if "New" means "not a reissue"--a 2016 without an asterisk being an example of a reissue--then track listings from 2015, which never have an asterisk, will be ambiguous as to the reissue issue.

Glad I could clear that up.

I think you should include a Loudness column ranging from 1 to, naturally, 11.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Jeff Golick:

Hi, hi, Dean! Was thinking about how to handle reissues. My sense of the new column is that it really denotes "new to the WFMU library," and not necessarily "new to the world." And since I'm not pulling from that library, it may be a little confusing.

But anyway this Rhys Chatham is totally new.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Doug Schulkind:

Yum! I love Rhys' pieces.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Andrew Waterloo:

good morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Jeff Golick:

And we have a winner! Hullo, Doug!
Good morning to you, sir, @Andrew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...you gotcher Eastern Abstraction into my Jazz!
- Yeah - well you got...Good MayDay e'erybody.
  9:42am Dean:

I never realized that "new" meant "to the WFMU library." I imagine most new additions to that library are new releases (reissue or not), too. But if you're not pulling from the WFMU library, then it is confusing. Is it supposed to mean "new to the WFMU library even though I'm not pulling it from there"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

The DJ who ignores her/his diacriticals is an, um, lout.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am listener james from westwood:

new is aok by me!
  9:46am Dean:

Okay, I'll stop the sophistry.

I'm just grateful this song isn't titled, "I Want to Do to You What George Washington Does to Cherry Trees."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Jeff Golick:

Cornet solo by the wonderful Kirk Knuffke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...all accordion to whose version of the story...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Jeff Golick:

I love how there's no topic too arcane, or seemingly meaningless, not to activate some level of conversation on the FMU chat boards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Jeff Golick:

Belated greetings to you, @RRN63! Glad you could squeeze us in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...of course - that's how the sound comes out...
Avatar 9:52am hyde:

ok, i'm on the road. will catch the rest later on. bye all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Jeff Golick:

Bye, @hyde! Safe travels!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Andrew Waterloo:

Somedays it's like hanging out with librarians.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Jeff Golick:

Ha. You speak from experience, @Andrew? In some real ways, all of us here ARE librarians.
  9:58am Dean:

It is, in fact, hanging out with at least one librarian.
  9:58am Dean:

Bumper sticker:

Librarians overdue it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Andrew Waterloo:

Yes, from experience, I've heard detailed take downs of Dewie Decimal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

President Obama gave a speech about jazz on Friday. He called it "a truth-telling music." It gave me goosebumps. Here, for after D:O Radio, is the speech: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 10:03am Brian in UK:

Quick hello/goodbye. Just back from the allotment. Digging, tilling etc. Knackered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Andrew Waterloo:

Bumper Sticker:

Librarians know where to put it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: the jazz references in the air are flying fast and furious. Haven't yet figured out how to grab a sample of Obama's speech...until now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Jeff Golick:

Hi/bye, @Brian in UK! Thanks for popping in. How far away is the allotment?
  10:06am Dean:

These days librarians know where to get it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Doug Schulkind:

"...how Billie's voice, shimmering and shattered, seemed to bend time itself..."

Another quote.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Jeff Golick:

Y'all have all seen the librarian action figure, yeah? mcphee.com... - my favorite part is the "push-button shushing action."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Doug Schulkind:

Shit, I saw the link URL and thought maybe it would be a Joe McPhee action figure.
  10:10am Dean:

Wait, Joe McPhee is a librarian! Was he shushing us at that Vision Festival almost twenty years ago?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Jeff Golick:

This Eisenstadt record was released in an edition of 300 LPs. But also, thankfully, as a digital release.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Jeff Golick:

To circle back to the "new" item, the reason it seemed a propos today was that the Rhys CD arrived in the mail here at home only a few days ago. It just seemed SO VERY NEW. Had to note that fact, I guess. Might never use that column again.
Avatar 10:15am Brian in UK:

Jeff about 1 1/2 miles, far enough to be annoying. Wish we had a bigger garden.

We have enough library issues over here. Bastard politicians do not give a flying .... for us. Off to the quiet corner now.

Leicester for the Premier League. 1-1 at present.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Jeff Golick:

Is there a better sports story now than Leicester taking the Premier title?
Avatar 10:16am Brian in UK:

I think not. Hang the rich.
  10:18am Dean:

Yeah, UK libraries have been getting picked off for years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Stanley:

Hi Brian - did you have the match on the radio at the allotment?
  10:22am Dean:

Great quote from NYT obit of Remo Belli, drum head entrepreneur: "After serving in the Navy (he enlisted and was assigned to a band), he arrived in California with $60, played in strip clubs and saloons, and toured with the singer Anita O’Day and the bandleader Billy May."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Andrew Waterloo:

You see, our local Library is getting more popular because they offer 3D printing, jazz and coffee on Sunday the morning, and you can checkout a wireless wifi pod.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Stanley:

The Wicker Man Yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

I thought this was pretty fookin cool from the Remo Belli obituary:

"Mr. Belli and his wife also worked with neurologists and educators to incorporate rhythm into wellness regimens. They developed the Rhythm Pal drumhead as an educational tool; it fit on ordinary pails sold in hardware stores and helped connect a child’s experience of simply banging on a bucket to playing a drum."
Avatar 10:31am holland oats:

"You look like Michael Caine" - DISS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Jeff Golick:

Uh....back to this for a sec: That's the challenge/opportunity for libraries: to become even more of a meeting place/community center kind of thing. I actually think better marketing would help here.
  10:43am Dean:

Libraries have been talking, mostly amongst themselves, about marketing for ages. It is indeed one of the challenges, and it's related to a corollary need to counter widespread misconceptions about the "information" landscape, the "age of information," purveyed by the tech industries. To wit: information isn't (merely) fungible. It exists as more or less discrete "literatures," which is why there is a real need to acquire so-called information literacy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am listener james from westwood:

Our Dear Leader Chris Christie went after library funding at the worst part of the Great Recession. Nah, it's not like folks ever use libraries for computer access to job info, applications, resume work, career research. Not at all.
  10:47am Dean:

But you know, ljfw, pulling yourself up by bootstraps you borrow from the library just isn't the same as pulling yourself up by your own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Andrew Waterloo:

Libraries have struggled with the idea that they are public space for more than the people who borrow books.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Andrew Waterloo:

Republicans are really good at exploiting the sentiment that you work hard and it's unfair that your tax dollars might be going to somebody who doesn't. That's where you get the malicious food-stamp politics of people desperately yelling about having to do something about welfare recipients having nice things.
Avatar 10:51am coelacanth:

good morning Jeff and Outies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Jeff Golick:

...which is a sentiment, @Andrew, made all the worse, and powerful, when there's a general overall sense of loss -- of rank, of real earnings, of respect, etc. Which, again, is absolutely being exploited in the worst way.
  10:52am Dean:

Not in my experience, AW, but my experience might be distinct. When I worked in a public library we were pretty chill with folks just coming in to hang out, read the paper, attend programs, etc. We could quantify their use of the facility through, e.g., gate counts. This makes the city leaders happy. Now, I did once have to ask one of our regular homeless patrons to find the local shelter to take a shower, but his was a special case.

I also once had to ask a belligerent/violent guy who forgot to take his meds to leave, accompanied by the local police. A couple weeks later and early in the morning in a town 100 miles away I was in the city van to attend a meeting. There was a lone pedestrian walking the main street. It was the guy I'd ousted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Jeff Golick:

Good morning to you, @coelacanth. Cute doggie you got there.
Avatar 10:57am coelacanth:

Thanks Jeff -he's a Darling!
...guess what? i was here "on time" last week!
Avatar 10:58am Brian in UK:

Stanley, sorry for the delay, needed some sustenance. No, the sound of the rotavator and bird song was enough for me.

As it stands Leicester are eight point ahead of Spurs with nine points left. If Spurs do not beat Chelsea tomorrow, Leicester are champs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Jeff Golick:

My favorite (?) line of recent weeks has been: "When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression." It's a bit of a bumper sticker, but still captures a lot of what goes on, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Jeff Golick:

Ok, yes, back to sport, please.

And @coelacanth: oh noes! Sorry 'bout that.
Avatar 11:00am Brian in UK:

@Jeff you are serious?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Jeff Golick:

YES, serious. Was getting a little...too serious.
Avatar 11:02am Brian in UK:

Always enjoyed The United Stated of America's 'Love Song for the Dead Che' Joe Byrd's group.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

My long-time favorite bumper sticker (now rendered unusable for obvious reasons):

Ankh if you love Isis!
Avatar 11:03am Brian in UK:

Mind you Jeff what can I say with our class system over here. Half the Conservative party went to Harrow, Eton or some minor public skool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Jeff Golick:

I honked in support of some striking (?) or protesting Verizon workers last weekend. So, y'know, I've done my part.
Avatar 11:05am coelacanth:

yeah Jeff. 'figures, right?! anyway i'm here now.

...and i like that phrase. it goes hand-in-hand with the fact that what is a bit "right-of-center" is now called "left-wing".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

Just learned that Kenny G is headlining the 2016 John Coltrane International Jazz & Blues Festival. I shit you not: www.coltranejazzfest.com
Avatar 11:06am Brian in UK:

At least the upper classes here do not feel obliged to rub ones nose in the brown and tacky to emphasise that we are not like them. It is taken as read.
Avatar 11:06am coelacanth:

oops, sorry. 'just sunk in, the other part of your post.
Avatar 11:07am Brian in UK:

Doug, god is an M&M.
Avatar 11:08am Brian in UK:

Not the green one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

It appears that David Sanborn headlined the 2015 festival.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Jeff Golick:

Class is tricky here. Seems more baldly based on $$ in most (but not all) quarters. So Trump can seem "upper class" to some, but a tacky bully to others.
Avatar 11:14am coelacanth:

maybe it's the same people who run the "songwriters hall of fame.
i (re-)read last night about how "please mr. postman" is credited by them to 3 people - none of whom actually wrote the song.
Avatar 11:15am Brian in UK:

@ coelacanth, must be a misdelivery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Jeff Golick:

(Prince on piano.)
Avatar 11:18am coelacanth:

Trump clearly has no class; just as giant white "suvs" have no class...just money.

...Brian, good one!
  11:19am Dean:

At least Sanborn had that cool tv show a long time ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am listener james from westwood:

Wow, the Temptations by way of Prince and the Stranglers' organ sound from "Always the Sun." Damn fine.
Avatar 11:20am Brian in UK:

Over here suvs seems to be driven by bottle blondes, female that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Andrew Waterloo:

Trump reminds me of the "House of Lies" concept of ghetto rich.
Avatar 11:20am glenn:

my new description of trump, which i have shamelessly stolen from james ellroy - "he's a eugenic misfit. he's half cockroach, half maladroit dwarf."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Jeff Golick:

This solo trumps (ahem) the sort of soggy backing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Andrew Waterloo:

Benjamin Walker had a conspiracy theory where Trump is a CIA experiment controlled by transmitters in his hands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Jeff Golick:

Ahoy, @glenn!
Avatar 11:22am coelacanth:

yeah Jeff, if there was redeeming to be done, it's done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Andrew Waterloo:

Or was it hood rich.. hood rich would be a better term.
Avatar 11:22am Brian in UK:

Soggy as a Weetabix that has been left for half an hour. (other cereals are available)
  11:24am Dean:

Magi Nation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am listener james from westwood:

Weetabix! Noticed them mentioned a couple of times in latter entries among Jenny Diski's online journals, which got un-paywalled for her passing this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

I will give Sanborn credit eternal for Night Music. But really, Hal Willner deserves all the credit. I once had a nice conversation with Willner about the show during a visit to WFMU. He told me the story of how he had booked Yusef Lateef for one episode and how Lateef bolted during rehearsals when he learned that the show was sponsored by Michelob (and there were Michelob posters and paraphernalia all over the set). Lateef had long ago given up performing in venues that served alcohol, and this was just too much.

(Everything always ends up with Yusef Lateef with me.)

Avatar 11:26am glenn:

@glenn he was always nice to me that summer of love.
Avatar 11:28am coelacanth:

Brian @11:20, i've always imagined england and many european countries to have streets too narrow for a bunch of living rooms on wheels....and petrol prices too high.
...i guess i've erred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am listener james from westwood:

@Brian: It's said a lot of potential VPs are taking two giant steps backwards from that line. Based on a tweet from earlier today, I saw Gingrich mentioned.
Avatar 11:28am glenn:

who in their right mind, which isn't saying much, considering the lunacy quotient of this current bunch, would want to be trump's running mate?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Andrew Waterloo:

An opportunist of some sort
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am listener james from westwood:

@Jeff no reason to apologize for that, it's a firebomb of a record from everything I've heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

Freeform means never having to say you're sorry, Jeff Golick.
Avatar 11:32am Brian in UK:

@coelacanth, they are but that does not stop the fuckwits driving them.

So what does a VP do anyway, make the Pres look good. Like over here.
Avatar 11:33am Brian in UK:

@Jeff Parkwood label?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Andrew Waterloo:

If it's Sarah Palin at least we'll find out what happens when the VP quits.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Andrew Waterloo:

Palin is intolerable, and that's a lot coming from an avant garde fan.
Avatar 11:39am glenn:

there's different intolerables, though. palin's intolerable because she's dumber than a box of mice. cruz is intolerable because he's a batshit god botherer.
  11:40am Dean:

This has a Threadgilly quality to it.
  11:41am Dean:

Threadgilly's the guy with the bar with the bull, isn't he?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Andrew Waterloo:

wow, that Coltrane Jazz Festival thing looks like our local free festival.
Avatar 11:43am coelacanth:

I double Don dare you.
  11:48am Dean:

That's "rodentist," which discriminates unfairly, too, against tooth doctors.

Avatar 11:51am Brian in UK:

Jeff looks good but how do two people write fiction?
  11:51am Dean:

Yeah, right. "Some of my best friends are squirrels."
Avatar 11:52am coelacanth:

it is true mice are about 1/100th as smart as squirrels.

@coelacanth who destroyed the other five?

@Jeff, Matt Warwick no doubt would approve. If he weren't ass-deep in Record Fair doings right now.

Oh, yeah, Spaceways! Going to Chicago in July, and I've just learned that Jazz Record Mart has revived.

The Blythe track prompted me to grab my Blythe records, which are in a kind of inaccessible corner of the room. Don't have that one. Filed after Blythe, a weird Myles Boisen/John Shiurba guitar duet thing of which my copy is purportedly (could be a joke) no. 2 of 88 released. Cover shows a drawing of an animal tooth doctor filing the teeth of a hippopotamus.
