Cool on the "new." Thx.
  9:32am
Dean:

Re: "New" column, I think it's redundant with Year column. Reissues could be noted as, e.g., 2016/1980, because if "New" means "not a reissue"--a 2016 without an asterisk being an example of a reissue--then track listings from 2015, which never have an asterisk, will be ambiguous as to the reissue issue.

Glad I could clear that up.

I think you should include a Loudness column ranging from 1 to, naturally, 11.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am
Jeff Golick:

Hi, hi, Dean! Was thinking about how to handle reissues. My sense of the new column is that it really denotes "new to the WFMU library," and not necessarily "new to the world." And since I'm not pulling from that library, it may be a little confusing.

But anyway this Rhys Chatham is totally new.

I never realized that "new" meant "to the WFMU library." I imagine most new additions to that library are new releases (reissue or not), too. But if you're not pulling from the WFMU library, then it is confusing. Is it supposed to mean "new to the WFMU library even though I'm not pulling it from there"?

"Mr. Belli and his wife also worked with neurologists and educators to incorporate rhythm into wellness regimens. Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am
Jeff Golick:

Uh....back to this for a sec: That's the challenge/opportunity for libraries: to become even more of a meeting place/community center kind of thing. I actually think better marketing would help here.
  10:43am
Dean:

Libraries have been talking, mostly amongst themselves, about marketing for ages. It is indeed one of the challenges, and it's related to a corollary need to counter widespread misconceptions about the "information" landscape, the "age of information," purveyed by the tech industries. To wit: information isn't (merely) fungible. It exists as more or less discrete "literatures," which is why there is a real need to acquire so-called information literacy.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:45am
listener james from westwood:

Our Dear Leader Chris Christie went after library funding at the worst part of the Great Recession. Nah, it's not like folks ever use libraries for computer access to job info, applications, resume work, career research. Not at all.
  10:47am
Dean:

But you know, ljfw, pulling yourself up by bootstraps you borrow from the library just isn't the same as pulling yourself up by your own.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:47am
Andrew Waterloo:

Libraries have struggled with the idea that they are public space for more than the people who borrow books.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:49am
Andrew Waterloo:

Republicans are really good at exploiting the sentiment that you work hard and it's unfair that your tax dollars might be going to somebody who doesn't. That's where you get the malicious food-stamp politics of people desperately yelling about having to do something about welfare recipients having nice things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am
Jeff Golick:

...which is a sentiment, @Andrew, made all the worse, and powerful, when there's a general overall sense of loss -- of rank, of real earnings, of respect, etc. Which, again, is absolutely being exploited in the worst way.
  10:52am
Dean:

Not in my experience, AW, but my experience might be distinct. When I worked in a public library we were pretty chill with folks just coming in to hang out, read the paper, attend programs, etc. We could quantify their use of the facility through, e.g., gate counts. This makes the city leaders happy. Now, I did once have to ask one of our regular homeless patrons to find the local shelter to take a shower, but his was a special case.

I also once had to ask a belligerent/violent guy who forgot to take his meds to leave, accompanied by the local police. A couple weeks later and early in the morning in a town 100 miles away I was in the city van to attend a meeting. There was a lone pedestrian walking the main street. It was the guy I'd ousted.

I will give Sanborn credit eternal for Night Music. But really, Hal Willner deserves all the credit. I once had a nice conversation with Willner about the show during a visit to WFMU. He told me the story of how he had booked Yusef Lateef for one episode and how Lateef bolted during rehearsals when he learned that the show was sponsored by Michelob (and there were Michelob posters and paraphernalia all over the set). Lateef had long ago given up performing in venues that served alcohol, and this was just too much.

Well there are known intolerables and the unknown tolerables. The intolerable tolerables means that only leaves DONALD RUMSFELD. Come on over here Don, yeah sure bring that frame with yuh.

I double Don dare you.

Dean:

That's "rodentist," which discriminates unfairly, too, against tooth doctors.

Re Rumsfeld: your comment, @Brian, reminded me of this odd read: store.mcsweeneys.net...

Jeff looks good but how do two people write fiction?

Dean:

Yeah, right. "Some of my best friends are squirrels."

it is true mice are about 1/100th as smart as squirrels.

You're saying mice are the true one-percenters?

Worlds scariest weapon of (possible) mass destruction: a Palindrone. It has the same effect whether going backwards or forwards, no one can tell the difference.

Ah, thanks, @ho!

Rats are supposed to be quite smart. Have always wanted to read this: www.amazon.com...

...especially the voles, which are a type of mice. 3 of 8 rose bushes destroyed over the winter in my sister's yard.

@coelacanth who destroyed the other five?

@Jeff, Matt Warwick no doubt would approve. If he weren't ass-deep in Record Fair doings right now.

rats are smart, but still will wander into a cage to get the peanut butter!

Oh, yeah, Spaceways! Going to Chicago in July, and I've just learned that Jazz Record Mart has revived.

The Blythe track prompted me to grab my Blythe records, which are in a kind of inaccessible corner of the room. Don't have that one. Filed after Blythe, a weird Myles Boisen/John Shiurba guitar duet thing of which my copy is purportedly (could be a joke) no. 2 of 88 released. Cover shows a drawing of an animal tooth doctor filing the teeth of a hippopotamus.
