Very cool, this Grid Mesh...member heard of them (not that that is unusual on this show, or fmu in general)

Grid Mesh relatively new to me, too, @doctorjazz. Glad you enjoyed.

listening to this show in staccato bursts while i try to get some gardening in before the endless rains come back at noon. it's like a strange sampler.

@hyde: staccato bursts sounds about right. Hoping the rains finally stop here at noon or so. Haven't seen the sun in a week.

speaking of music for airports, which is reminding me of Eno, I recently watched a pretty great Eno documentary. 2.5 hours about his music from 1971-1977.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am

Nice, @JtotheK. Was that online somewhere?

i'm behind in my music-doc watching. a different service (Fandor) has the WFMU Doc (which I did watch and thought was great) and the Decline of the Western Civilization trilogy, a doc about Devo, one about Sun Ra which was really good, and on and on...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am
Jeff Golick:

Same here. There is ALWAYS more to watch. Last I caught was the Nina Simone doc, which was very well done. (Was on Netflix at the time.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am
Jeff Golick:

I sadly have yet to see the FMU doc.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:16am
JtotheK:

i haven't seen the Nina Simone documentary yet, it's queued up "to be watched". i was looking now at my Fandor queue, and realize how behind I am.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:19am
JtotheK:

'Sonic Outlaws' is a doc about Negativland post Casey Kasem-U2 and how Island Records had lawyers trying to "erase the piece from the history of rock music". That sounds pretty good. As does 'Life on the V' about a Boston-based music television channel in the early 1980s. And 'Jingle Bell Rocks', about Christmas Music Fanatics. And 'Art Tatum: The Art of Jazz Piano'. So much good stuff to watch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am
Andrew Waterloo:

I am interested in the Residents Doc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am
Jeff Golick:

I've had Sonic Outlaws in my Netflix queue for what feels like years. And I have GOT to chek out Live on the V -- if that's V66, that was my first exposure to music videos, pre-MTV! I still remember seeing the video for "How Soon Is Now" as a tyke and being bowled over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am
Andrew Waterloo:

The Nina Simone doc is quite good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am

This Fandor looks fantastic. It actually has an interface that movie fans can use to find movies.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:30am
doctorjazz:

I saw the Nina Simone doc, quite well done, really sad. haven't seen the others mentioned, get Netflix and Amazon Prime, have to see what's available there. Sun Ra, huh...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am
Jeff Golick:

Was only recently turned on to Fandor, via some post re alternatives to Netflix/Hulu/Amazon. It was the only one that seemed worthwhile -- don't recall the cost, though...?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:33am
JtotheK:

@Andrew Waterloo, @JeffG -- I learned about Fandor via a friend on Facebook. They had been running a promo where it was $4/month for a year, standard I think is $7/month.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am
Andrew Waterloo:

Not bad. Wasn't seeing a price. Appears to be available in Canada
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:35am
doctorjazz:

Pretty inexpensive, looks like there's a free trial, and half price for the first year. $% the first year. But, do I need a 3rd streaming movie service...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:36am
doctorjazz:

that's $45 first year
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:36am
JtotheK:

It's great for classic/cult films and documentaries. And Criterion films...though the TCM/Criterion service is going to be starting at the end of the year... which means Hulu loses all their Criterion films in November. (That was a big reason I signed up for Hulu in the first place...) Not sure how much of an impact that will have on Fandor, though I would imagine they won't have as many (any?) Criterion films available...

Speaking of crappy documentaries, I just saw something called The Legacy of Frida Kahlo at a film festival this weekend. It had nothing to do with Frida or her legacy. More about a photographer who was sent to document Frida's belongings. Loads of shots of the photographer's camera and not much else. Avoid it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am
Jeff Golick:

Hello, @Erella, and glad you are enjoying! Thanks for the fair warning re the Frida doc. Were you able to find the bandcamp links per @doctorjazz's note above?

Yah, Hulu and Mubi have always been a big tease for my Canadian self.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:48am
JtotheK:

I'm /hoping/ the new service will be under 10 bucks per month and I'll begrudgingly sign up for /yet another/ streaming movie service with /yet another/ queue to try to keep track of what films are available where.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
Jeff Golick:

Jesus, I worry about Criterion sometimes; they've been jumping all over the place. I really hope this new thing works, but I have my doubts/concerns.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:49am

it's called Blue Caprice, the movie itself is OK but not great. But the score is all just Stetson and Sarah Neufield playing everything, mainly sax and violin and keyboard, and it's really cool. I don't know if it's released as a soundtrack, I just saw the movie.
