That is sad news about Other Music. I'm glad i was able to stop by last year. Wish i could have more often.

Scraps deSelby:

My ex sent me the news about Other Music. (I had moved to Seattle.) It's sad, to me. I only was a customer, but a frequent customer, spent $100 every trip I swear just on used cds.... sigh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
Mark the Sardine:

Great message, Duane - really appreciate your show & your work helping to keep the community alive
  12:51pm
JakeGould:

Sad about “Other Music” but I remember when they opened and the whole Village was filled with things you could wander around to/from. It was part of a creative retail world. But now that creative retail world in Manhattan is dead.

You know what’s missing in NYC? Places to creatively slack. Cafes in he village? Gone… Casual venues? Gone… Record, book and video stores? Gone…
Avatar 12:52pm
Scraps deSelby:

Affordable housing? Gone....
Avatar 12:53pm
kumar:

probably a dumb question but why didn't Other Music just move to brooklyn? Too saturated?
  12:55pm
JakeGould:

I hate the phrase “affordable housing” in NYC. It mean a 200 unit building allows 30 units to be “below market” rate and it’s like that would change anything.
Avatar 12:55pm
Duane:

kumar: In a nutshell..the numbers didn't make sense
Avatar 12:55pm
Scraps deSelby:

Every year the profits are lower. Move to Brooklyn would only put off the inevitable
  12:56pm
JakeGould:

FWIW, the record stores that exist in Brooklyn still are not rolling in the $$$… Unless you want to count that Rough Trade store that is basically a music venue with records for sale as souvenirs.
Avatar 12:56pm
kumar:

I see.
Avatar 12:58pm
Scraps deSelby:

Jake: i use the phrase "affordable housing" only to describe me, admittedly
Avatar 12:58pm
Jshatan:

Love The Wild Magnolias! Can't knock their groove.
Avatar 12:58pm
kumar:

One day someone is going to figure out how to combine brick and mortar sales with online sales and it's going to explode. Discogs is an obvious success but it has no brick and mortar component (which I still think adds value even when you look at it purely from a "profit" standpoint).
  12:59pm
JakeGould:

The future of niche retail nowadays is flea markets, record fairs and maybe retail trucks.
Avatar 1:01pm
kumar:

oh yeah, a record truck could be a huge success if done right -- i.e. by hooking into all the mobile things
Avatar 1:02pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm

Living in AZ now, I am still fortunate to visit NYC about five times a year, always paying a visit to Chris and Other Music. Now, like much of old New York, it will become a distant dream. Thanks Duane for being part of one of New York's greatest-ever record stores.

@JakeGould re your "affordable housing" comment, the same thing is happening in Chicago. Two buildings like that are going up right across the street from where I catch the El downtown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
Kat in Chicago:

the El to downtown, that is.
  1:19pm
JakeGould:

Something on this “Saxophone” reminds me of OMD.
  1:22pm
dj:

Man. This song kills me everytime. I hate being sensitive to music. Its too fing hard.
  1:23pm
JakeGould:

@KatinChicago: In Downtown Brooklyn they are basically building a HUGE glass condo city. Everyone nearby—since I used to live around there—all agrees that once those towers get built and populated, it’s going to be d-bag town. Glass towers with a drug store and bank on the ground level? This is not right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm

@Melomeezy: SoHo is horrible. If I get off the Prince Street station it’s like I have to push (literally) my way through tourists just to leave. Stinks. The few old-school street vendors out there make it bearable.

@FriendscallmeMel: Lot Radio is cool, but it still drives me nuts that anyone wanting to do anything creative has to have a multifaceted endeavor from the get go… You can’t just be a record store, you need to serve pastries and drinks. It’s like everything is an accessory for something else.

Speaking of banks in buildings, it seems like every time a nice, local business fails, it is replaced by a bank branch. What's up with that? I thought online banking was being promoted. Can we suspect they are just hoarding real estate?

I read about Other Music and although I've recently relocated to SoCal from NYC it makes me sad. It seems NYC is going through a new Gilded Age for the 1 percenters.
  2:33pm
JakeGould:

@Michael98145: “Can we suspect they are just hoarding real estate?” Pretty much. Also controlling the brick and mortar market the same way that Starbucks opens a cluster of locations to destroy local competitors. Ditto with real estate offices. They open up in NYC nowadays after many small businesses fail.
