This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hi Doug!

I aim to refresh and pleasure. Submerge yourself in my refreshing aural pleasure pool
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

I GOT SO HOT this week. I spent all day in the sun waterproofing a porch. So muggy, so humid, so fuckin hott

need to get COOL IN ZE POOL. so tonight, we swim
Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

and, it might be worth pointing out, this particular piece was indeed recorded live, underwater
Avatar 7:08pm geezerette:

Helmet with Bose speakers,lovely.
Good idea Doug.
Avatar 7:11pm geezerette:

Hot here too,90 something. Brains are melting. Mine at least.
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

i don't mean to brag but I have actually listened to a lot of this stuff underwater, while snorkeling a reef, on an underwater ipod. pretty cool stuff. got that Zissou sensation. I have to say the best stuff for it was, without a doubt, Sven Libaek. But the stuff from tonight;s program was amazing too
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

Some of it is better at evoking the sea than accompanying the sea, I guess I mean to say
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

let's cool those brains off, g-ette
Avatar 7:13pm geezerette:

We used to swim at a pool with underwater speakers when I was a child. It was wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Doug Schulkind:

Speaking cool and pool, few Pools were cooler than NYC performance artist Gene Pool: www.artcaragency.com...
Avatar 7:21pm ndbob:

I haven;t heard this in years
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

I just can't believe how much like a birdsong that sped-up whale song sounds
Avatar 7:22pm Flash Strap:

I always wanted to swim in a pool with speakers. like, on the regular.
Avatar 7:27pm geezerette:

Fascinated me that the music sounded even better underwater.

I see snorkling elephants when the whales sing.

Doug, thanks for link. :)
Avatar 7:28pm geezerette:

Gene Pool, hilarious. :D
Avatar 7:29pm hyde:

i love this flexidisc!
Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde! Me too, man. Such a thing. So unexpectedly emotional.
Avatar 7:30pm ndbob:

I listened to the entire Voyager audio collection the other day
Avatar 7:30pm Flash Strap:

"That idea stops my heart."
Avatar 7:30pm geezerette:

Not ten minutes in and it's already thoroughly surreal.
Avatar 7:30pm ndbob:

Indeed Hyde
Avatar 7:30pm hyde:

@ndb oh, that's awesome. they made good selections, i think
Avatar 7:31pm hyde:

note: i also own this flexidisc, though it sounds a lot worse than this
Avatar 7:31pm ndbob:

@hyde they really did
Avatar 7:33pm geezerette:

The wobbling and scratching become percussive. I love that about records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Ike:

Greetings, rum punks and cobbler hippies!
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

I found it mint an an old copy of the magazine. Only listened to it twice I think, but it already sounds a lot more worn. Still so grand though
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

Ahoy, Ike!
Avatar 7:35pm Flash Strap:

ok, we're gonna let Pauline take us really deep
Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

@Geezerette: me too, me too. Some records I've kept mostly because I like the distortion rhythms
Avatar 7:39pm geezerette:

It's bonus music.
Avatar 7:40pm hyde:

i listened to a videogame music podcast (Super Marcato Brothers #212) with this same theme awhile back. i didn't love the podcast overall tho it had some good stuff. but it turned me on to David Wise's "Aquatic Ambiance" from Donkey Kong Country which i thought was kind of amazing.
Avatar 7:40pm Flash Strap:

It's time playing a percussive accompaniment
Avatar 7:41pm geezerette:

Evan,yes! :)
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

Some of that early videogame music is so good it's crazy. I think I've heard that DK theme but want to revisit now that you've mentioned it
Avatar 7:44pm hyde:

@Flash i'll send it to you, all i have is the one mp3. really makes me want to look for more David Wise.
Avatar 7:46pm geezerette:

I need to work but I'll be listening. Cooler already!
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

Oh please do, Hyde

Good work times to you, G.
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

I got really excited about this when it came out, and then almost immediately the narrative illusion was ruined and I lost basically all interest... upon revisitation, I really enjoyed it. I mean, it's pretty impressive, and really lovely. We'll hear I think four short selections
Avatar 7:58pm ndbob:

excellent first Evan - catch the rest later!
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

thanks bob, adios good buddy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm melinda:

hi explorers! I like this already. bye Bob!
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda!
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

This is the stuff Cousteau commissioned, but never used as it was too avant-garde. It's SO good
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

Image at the bottom is from the Cousteau film, The Silent World. Which, I hate to say, I've never seen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm melinda:

Evan I love that you listened to Sven Libaek while snorkeling. I didn't know there was such a thing as an underwater ipod that would allow for it.
Avatar 8:17pm hyde:

The Silent World is awesome. I loved it when i was a kid. There's a decent looking unsubtitled French version of it on Youtube, fwiw (and let's be honest, Le Monde du Silence just sounds better) www.youtube.com...
Avatar 8:18pm Flash Strap:

There is one, at least one, it didn't work all that perfectly but it was so so cool. It was just too weird to do it. I always prefer to listen to Libaek "out in the world" on portable speakers and tape players while doing my walkabouts, but to do it underwater was amazing, amazing
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

Le Monde du Silence sounds a million times better
Avatar 8:27pm hyde:

and also, how cool is Jacques Costeau? he more or less refined the aqualung into something useful for large numbers of divers, he worked for the Allies even though his brother was a huge collaborator with the Nazis and then he won the Palme D' Or for the Silent World. As someone who grew up in the 70's, he was everywhere on tv in those days in the US, which is kind of remarkable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm melinda:

Will we be hearing John Denver's Calypso tonight?
Avatar 8:30pm hyde:

don't give me the bends, man. Don't give me the bends.
Avatar 8:33pm Flash Strap:

He is the actual coolest, Hyde
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Ike:

What the hell are these four adolescent-ish raccoons doing snuggled up together on the fire escape right outside my bedroom window? They startled the crap outta me. Pfft, wildlife in southern Brooklyn?! Sheesh. Next you'll tell me there are mountain lions in L.A.
Avatar 8:37pm coelacanth:

greetings Evan and frogpeople
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm melinda:

hi coel! you must feel at home in these waters.
Avatar 8:41pm Flash Strap:

Yeah, coel, you've been in this sea since before fish were fish

also welcome, friend
Avatar 8:42pm coelacanth:

yes these sounds remind me of my childhood home. 'getting nostalgic here!
Avatar 8:43pm hyde:

@Ike awwww, raccoons are good beasts. the old ones get a little mean, but they are smart as hell. i had one set up shop on my porch when i lived in Cambridge. Was gone the next day.
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

my first coelacanth ever, at the Harvard museum: static.panoramio.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm melinda:

That does sound a bit wild for Brooklyn, but what do I know.
Avatar 8:46pm hyde:

@Flash heh, i worked in the same building as that for a bunch of years (at the Peabody Museum)
Avatar 8:47pm hyde:

wow, i love this Michael Stearns LP
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

We used to keep 20+ chickens when I was growing up. One thing I don't miss about it is being constantly at war with raccoons, who I generally love

That and it was during a huge rabies epidemic, so every raccoon was a potential rage zombie
Avatar 8:48pm Flash Strap:

They're brilliant. They can figure out all kinds of clasps and latches
Avatar 8:49pm Flash Strap:

I used to be there all the time... my partner used to be there literally every day as a little girl... I wonder f any of us ever crossed paths, Hyde
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm melinda:

And they look like little burglars with their masks.
Avatar 8:50pm coelacanth:

i wouldn't think raccoons would do that unless they were attracted by food...but i'm no expert. they have their reasons.
....i have lots of flowering vines on my fire escape (& a few herbs) so i'm not surprised that i get birds and an occasional squirrel. (including hummingbirds!)
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

Michel Magne is so fuckin cool
Avatar 8:52pm hyde:

@Flash haha, probably we were all simultaneously staring at the same glass flowers unknowingly
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

I was big into this guy also: www.wired.com...
Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

one thing i love whenever i do synth-heavy shows – the soundwaves on the recording are these perfect geometric designs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm JtotheK:

good evening evan and explorers.
Avatar 8:58pm Flash Strap:

Good evening Joker 2the Knight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm JtotheK:

i see that i /just missed/ some marc barreca 'twilight' tracks -- cool LP, found that last year!
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

nice. it's really cool. you mean you found the real thing? I'm jealous
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm JtotheK:

yeah, area record store had it ... a second area record store had a copy as well. if you want i can inquire if it's still available...
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

don't trouble yourself on my account. but if you just happen to come across the knowledge, give me a heads up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm JtotheK:

i'm also happy to report that the i've applied knowledge gained from explorers room university recently... found the 45 'Tanganyika' by Gene Sikora, which i learned about from one of your shows last year! thanks!
Avatar 9:04pm Flash Strap:

getting dangerously close to the surface here... starting to feel that heat again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm JtotheK:

(and I learned that the 45, on the 'coin' label was a local record!)
Avatar 9:05pm coelacanth:

Flash, those "kronosauruses" (as they're called now...we knew them only as "our badass neighbors from 'round the block") were pretty awesome. they used to pull us in wagons, as they were much faster than us.
'hated to see them go.
Avatar 9:05pm Flash Strap:

Oh that's the best man! When you see something that you might have previously just passed by... I do that all the time, I love when it works out. And congratulations, that's a good one
Avatar 9:08pm hyde:

@coelacanth man, and i thought i was old! our wagons were pulled by eohippuses
Avatar 9:09pm Flash Strap:

Some underwater, human-exclusive Flintstones imagery you're conjuring up here, C
Avatar 9:09pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 9:12pm hyde:

how can you not love the dawn horse?
Avatar 9:17pm coelacanth:

beautiful creature. - back when fish were fish and mammals were mammals; and reptiles were reptiles.
....and coelacanths were something else.
Avatar 9:17pm Little Danny:

Just now tuning in after a hectic day. Another gorgeous playlist, Flash!
Avatar 9:18pm Little Danny:

@JtotheK Man that Gene Sikora 45 is the best. Love the percussive break so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm JtotheK:

@little danny -- agreed! p.s. i've been enjoying your programs quite a bit, i've been tuning in via archives.
Avatar 9:21pm Little Danny:

Wonderful. Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm JtotheK:

i also owe you a thanks -- there's a "dermy" website i've seen you post at, which i haven't posted at in YEARS but still lurk, and you gave a heads up about a reasonably priced 45, Big Maybelle '96 Tears' - and i was able to snatch it up... thanks!
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

Hi Danny! Thanks, man
Avatar 9:31pm Little Danny:

My pleasure Flash. God, so many great underwater-themed albums, especially in the late '60s to '70s Undersea-World-of-Jacques-Cousteau era.
Avatar 9:32pm Little Danny:

@JtotheK: Excellent - glad it went to an FMU listener!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Uncle Michael:

Pretty chill show tonight, Flash. I like.
  9:34pm Dean:

Was playing Ian Whitcomb's Comedy Songs here until I saw Redolfi on the playlist. I've always wanted to hear this record. I have #2, but not this one.
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

@Danny - I know! After picking some of my favorite tracks, I actually had to pare it down to 3 hours from 13! And that's just my faves, excluding any library stuff, of which I have WAY more
Avatar 9:35pm Flash Strap:

Hi UM! Chill is exactly what i needed tonight, after all this heat frazzlin my noodle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Uncle Michael:

Dean, did you know Ian has a show on Luxuria Radio?

Yeah, pretty warm here, too.
Avatar 9:36pm Flash Strap:

Probably a good time to point out, once again, that all this Redolfi stuff is recorded under and through water

Hi Dean! I actually have never heard 2! Always wanted to get ahold of it. How is it?
  9:38pm Dean:

Er, good question. I don't exactly remember. This one impresses me more on first hearing, put it that way.
Avatar 9:39pm Flash Strap:

Even better than this one, at least in some ways, is the 1st one he did in 1980: Immersion / Pacific Tubular Waves
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm JtotheK:

is starting to wonder when power in area will be restored...was H-O-T the past few days and stormy weather (yes Four Casts...) knocked out power. i have under 1 hour of laptop battery...at least phone had full charge, using as internet hotspot and all...
Avatar 9:41pm Flash Strap:

But I played the shit out of it on some show months ago, so I benched it for tonight. It has a lot of disruptive waves breaking and stuff like that, super intense sounds
Avatar 9:42pm Flash Strap:

Oh man good luck to ya J. I lost power a few weeks ago and it just gets in the way of radio time, y'know
  9:43pm Dean:

Just looking now at line-up on #2. It includes Ensemble Ricercar, who did a lot of early music at the time. That makes sense, as I recall the record as being somewhat eclectic. The track on which they perform is a "new version" of a track evidently on the first record, "Full Scale Ocean." Will have to seek the early records!
Avatar 9:45pm hyde:

@JtotheK oof. i had that a couple years ago when the sideswipe of a hurricane made us lose power for 4 days. it gets old, right quick
  9:47pm Dean:

Sorry to say this, but when you lost power, FS, I gained an opportunity to guest DJ via Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm JtotheK:

oh my, 4 days... no thanks! it's only been a few hours, seems like areas 4-5 hours North may have had it much worse...
  9:48pm Dean:

This Schütz is reminding me of Froese's Epsilon in Malaysian Pale, which includes a water track, "Maroubra Bay."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm Alex In Illinois:

I was listening too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx man !
Avatar 9:51pm Little Danny:

Thanks Flash - everyone is invited to join me in your neighboring lagoon: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm JtotheK:

enjoyed the show, thanks Evan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm JtotheK:

@dean - i just listened to malaysian pale last weekend! cool lp.
Avatar 9:55pm coelacanth:

Thanks Evan! a sublime program it's been.
Avatar 9:55pm Flash Strap:

@Dean: well I'm glad that worked out, man! Also, that's my favorite Froese album, and it was hard to not play anything from it or "Aqua" tonight... but I think my 3rd ever show was an all-Froese/Tangerine Dream extravaganza, so I held off

HI Alex, HI Rabbit! Thanks for listening pals
Avatar 9:57pm Flash Strap:

thank you, C
  9:57pm Dean:

"i just listened to malaysian pale last weekend!" One of those sentences you never, ever expect to hear.
Avatar 9:59pm Flash Strap:

man, I listen to it A LOT. Whenever I'm in a canoe, but not exclusively so
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm JtotheK:

you mean it's not said all the time?
Avatar 10:00pm hyde:

thanks, man!
  10:00pm Dean:

I don't get around all that much.
Avatar 10:01pm Flash Strap:
