I now hit up thrift stores for LPs....any tips on commonly available records there that are worth getting. For instance, I want to get Billy Joel's Glass Houses....but any really old 33.3 rpm stuff worth getting? I am already aware anyting on the Blue Note label is pure gold no matter what. Thanks! Modern Art singer seems very Eno influenced.
Avatar 9:40am Joe McG:

@Marcel: Now that you say it, I can hear it! I feel like a lot of those early 80s British vocalists were into Eno or Bowie as their vocal models.

Avatar 10:44am Brian in UK:

Avatar 10:45am Cecile:

Yellow Pills was the fanzine and brainchild of St Louis's Jordan Oakes.

it looks like he had a lot to do with the comp but he and Numero had a falling out at some point.

@Brian: I've never known an Otis, either.

big yay for Ring My Bell
Avatar 10:51am Cecile:

I knew about Jordan Oakes cause I have some Pills comps and zines, and he used to post on the Power Pop board on AOL 20 years or so ago. I saw the article about the fallout when I googled him to see if he was involved in that comp.
Avatar 10:51am Brian in UK:

You got me there Joe, only known of Otis'.

Did know an Anita at skool.
Avatar 10:51am herb.nyc:

since you mentioned Evan, Joe, Evan played this "ring my bell" song on one of his recent Disco Extravaganzas!

Also? with a lot of those power pop comps, the lyrics creep me the hell out. I used to say that Shoes could be darker then a goth band.
Avatar 10:54am Joe McG:

As a side note, "Quittin' just ain't my schtick" may be one of my all-time favorite lyrics.

@herb: I remember seeing Radio Eris in the basement of a bar in Paris. Because of different voltage standards, the guy who played the Theremin would occasionally get shocked, though he soldiered on. Not a good memory, especially with such nice people
Avatar 11:20am herb.nyc:

Brigid sounds really really good; thanks for the introductions, Joe.
Avatar 11:22am herb.nyc:

(aside to "ring my bell" - my french amie Emmanuelle just emailed me, after i told her that Joe played song: memories in France, Normandy. Summer time and my best girlfriend and I used to go to the summer fair held by the beach in August.
I remember a particular summer (I was probably 15), when we had an interest in some boys, and we would meet them at the fair, and hang out at the bumper cars ride where this song was playing. Each time I hear this track, I remember it. )
Avatar 11:22am fred:

As usual, her tour doesn't stop nearby. I don't blame her, but I'm still disappointed
Avatar 11:22am Joe McG:

You bet, Herb. I love these versions because they are so unadorned.
Avatar 11:22am herb.nyc:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am annie:

there's a busker at the Earth Fare whose voice is slightly higher in pitch than this, i love her singing but her repetoire includes 10 songs, maybe. this is too close to comfort for me, though i do like it.
Avatar 11:31am herb.nyc:

@Fred - i've seen Sharon perform a few times, and yr right. (first time i saw her was at Union Hall, she opened for Neal Halstead. friend and i knew nothing of her but i did see her name mentioned in a few places. i was really wowed by her and my friend liked too. then i last saw her at Town Hall, and she had a pretty dress on and was in top form. it was her father's birthday and when i saw him in the audience, post-show, i complimented him on her talents.)
Avatar 11:33am Whosondephone:

The vocal is to close/loud. It's making the performance sound awkward
Avatar 11:36am Joe McG:

I beg to differ, Whosondephone.
