KILLER intro! Looking forward to this show, Joe :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am annie:

good morning mr mcgasko! i got my magnets, thank you tons!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am annie:

this sounds so much like that song that starts.."i saw you were a man of distinction.." no brain this morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am doctorjazz:

Thought it was Thursday on the GTDR Stream...
Nice to hear the whole track.
Avatar 9:07am Wild Neil:

PEACE all. This movie is nuts, it opens with a dog thief giving a dog a dye job so he can re-sell it much as a car thief wood...its nuts! And about heroin addicts...SEEDY!
Avatar 9:08am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar 9:10am Rev. Turnip Druid:

EXCELLENT opener. Favorite soundtrack, favorite film of all time forever.

I've had the tradition for decades of watching Man With The Golden Arm at midnight on Xmas Eve... Nothing says Xmas like Frank Sinatra going cold turkey on Kim Novak's floor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Michele:

Morning !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Ken From Hyde Park:

<insert the "Magnets, how do they work?" picture with the Insane Clown Posse guy>
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am annie:

the soundtracks behind all these movies were so alive and dynamic!
Avatar 9:13am Joe McG:

Hey, everybody, welcome to the week! Sheila B.! Michele! :)
Avatar 9:13am Wild Neil:

I'll second Annie here...wow, these Jazz orchestras were the bomb!
Avatar 9:13am djsheilab:

You're creating a beautiful, brassy world, Joe. Just the kinda kick I need on Monday!
Avatar 9:15am Joe McG:

@djsb: Aw, shucks, glad I could give you a kick. ;) After that whirlwind weekend, I'm amazed you are up this early!
Avatar 9:16am V Priceless:

mornin', Joe!
Avatar 9:16am Wild Neil:

Anybody see The Island (2005) by director Micheal Bay? It was kind cool but borrowed heavily from The Clonus Horror (who sued them,,,and won) and also Logan's Run....
  9:17am Brendan:

It was a hot steamy mornin in the northeast after a hot night in a city of millions of swell dames. A cool DJ was pullin wax from the stax and spinnin em in a magical procession of classy tunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am annie:

was that the movie with Leo? i liked the book much better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am annie:

man, joe, ya make me want to put all the film noir on a youtube feed. anyone ever seen that movie with dennis hopper, "Night Tide"?
  9:20am P-90:

Hi Joe Mc G and Surface Dwellers.
Great start.
Avatar 9:20am Wild Neil:

@Annie-no, it had Scarlett Johannsen and Ewen McGregor.....
Unless you mean the Man with the Golden Arm...that was Sinatra....
Night Tide looks cool...there's a Beatnik Beach party!
  9:24am KP:

Good morning, Jazzy Joe.
Avatar 9:24am Rev. Turnip Druid:

After digging the Golden Arm movie for ages, finally got the book last year. Nelson Algren's imagery is amazing. The whole book is a giant friggin' poetry bomb.
Avatar 9:25am Joe McG:

This song makes me want to swagger!
Avatar 9:26am Cheri Pi:

Belated Boing Boing!
Avatar 9:26am Wild Neil:

This Mission Impossible Theme makes we want to go on an impossible mission...and like take over a South American Government or something....
Avatar 9:27am Sem Chumbo:

Bongo goodness! Morning, Joe, and the McGaskos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Parq:

The Mission Impossible theme has been spoofed so often that it's neat to hear the original, especially all the way through. Lots of people never heard that harpsichord-ish break, I bet.
  9:28am Brendan:

I Spy is a good theme too
Avatar 9:29am Wild Neil:

This segment is gonna be hard to top, Joe McGasko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am annie:

no, neil, two diff movies..
Avatar 9:31am Wild Neil:

My friend had a toy Chihauhua, it was about 6 inches long and unbelievably small. Its name was Yoda...it was smaller than a CAT...my goodness that dog was small....a walk around the block was probably like a mile to the poor creature!
  9:34am Taylor in the CH:

Loving this music, Joe. Thanks!
Who is playing in the background?
  9:37am Polyus:

Boogie Down Boogarins
Avatar 9:37am Joe McG:

@Taylor: That's the one and only Art Van Damme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Devin B.:

saw boogarins last night. they were incredible!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Guido from Cologne:

Oh now comes the biggest phasing-orgy in the universe!
Great track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Guido from Cologne:

Hi joe!
Hi people!
Avatar 9:41am Wild Neil:

Russell Morris reminds me of Donovan a lot in terms of its jangly approach to melody...its pretty cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Guido from Cologne:

It is on one of the later "Rubble"-volumes, as a info for the people who need to have this.
  9:43am Taylor in the CH:

Thanks, Joe.

The other Joe's friend.
  9:49am Polyus:

Wow, we were talking about early Bangles just yesterday, after seeing a video for one of their later hits. Were they originally associated with the Paisley Underground scene?
Avatar 9:50am Joe McG:

@Polyus: Yes, they were! In fact, I think they played that Paisley Underground reunion show in L.A. last year. Also they all hung out with each other, shared apts., etc.
Avatar 9:51am Cecile:

Poly, yes.
I saw them open for the English Beat. I booed them. But people seemed to like them. I thought they were sloppy. And they were cutting into my Beat watching time. hahahahah
  9:52am P-90:

Great Evie Sands version here.
  9:53am Taylor in the CH:

From Lullaby in Rhythm?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Guido from Cologne:

this was a big hit in Germany
Avatar 9:54am Joe McG:

@Guido: This should have been a monster everywhere. #1 in my book!
Avatar 9:54am Cecile:

they also did a killer version of "Since You've Been Gone" They were from South Africa, I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am annie:

the on-hold music is seriously in conflict with the music from my laptop....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Guido from Cologne:

Such hits usually arrived in Germany via transition from Netherlands.
Avatar 9:57am Cecile:

jeez the bass player sounds like he loves the Move.
Avatar 9:57am Joe McG:

@Cecile: Yep, that's true. Also did a nice version of Hall and Oates' "Portable Radio."
Avatar 9:57am Cecile:

That makes a ton of sense, Guido! I never thought of that!
Avatar 9:58am Cecile:

Hey, did you ever listen to Russ Ballard's Winning, Joe? What did you think of it?
Avatar 9:59am Joe McG:

@Cecile: Bought it on your recommend, Cecile. Liked it a lot! Played it on the show, I think.

Avatar 10:06am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe. Played Keith Richards solo from 1988 yesterday, no idea why I have that album.
Avatar 10:07am Joe McG:

@MD: Me, too! @Brian: I have no idea why you have it, either! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Guido from Cologne:

@Guido what was it called in Europe?
Avatar 10:09am Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Uncle Michael:

I stepped out and missed Clout! Dammit.
  10:10am KP:

There's a Raiders song on that new vintage Bangles comp
Avatar 10:11am Sem Chumbo:

Indian Reservation would not be a big hit today, I think.
Or that, either.
  10:11am P-90:

I'm belong to the proud minority that like Keef's solo albums, there are some gems on them. Mainly, the tours he did to support them were amazeballs!
Avatar 10:12am Wild Neil:

I THINK The Yardbirds did this song.
Avatar 10:12am V Priceless:

oh, this is lovely
  10:12am KP:

Avatar 10:13am Brian in UK:

@Sem due to a glut of courgettes I am going to post one through your letter box with a note attached stating that the aliens have landed.
Avatar 10:13am Cecile:

Yes, they did.

P-90, if the Stones would have put out fun, sloppy albums like that, instead of those over-produced 80s duds, their reputation would be a lot better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Wendy del Formaggio:

Joe, are you hitting the mic? That's weird.
Avatar 10:14am Sem Chumbo:

@BiUK: shit, yeah. It's a zucchuini-nado here as well.
How are you fixed for kale? Need a bushel or two?
Avatar 10:15am Brian in UK:

Sem kale is a white fly magnet in this manor.
  10:15am lisa:

Joe, you're on fire this morning! I'm so happy to hear this version of my fave Tony Hazzard tune-never heard it before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Greg from ZONE 5:

Yoooooooo JOE!
Avatar 10:16am Joe McG:

@KP: If only we had it here, I would've had a great segueway! @P-90: I had "Talk Is Cheap" for years and eventually sold it. @Wendy: Hi, Wendy!
Avatar 10:16am Sem Chumbo:

@P-90. Pithy and oh-so-true. Whatever were thinking about? Black and Blue? Bull and Shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Wendy del Formaggio:

Hi Joe!
Avatar 10:17am Cecile:

Yes! But now I have to make a long phone call. Thank God for archives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Wendy del Formaggio:

Ooh, I love love love this Soft Boys song. I'm glad I tuned in in time to hear it. Thanks, Joe!
Avatar 10:18am Cecile:

God, Black and Blue sounds like Exile on Main Street compared to something like Dirty Work.
Avatar 10:18am Sem Chumbo:

Ah, the tasteless white fly.
Outbreak of yellow spotted cucumber beetle playing havoc with the squash and pumpkins,@ Brian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am pantz:

I love Soft Boys!!! I might be on an internet watch list now for saying it, but I don't care!
  10:19am Brendan:

Love Robins guitar playing
Avatar 10:20am Sem Chumbo:

Well said @Cecile.
I really stopped caring after Exiles, liked parts of Some Girls, but mostly laughably horrible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am pantz:

Had a chance to see Mr Hitchcock and missed it. I'm still kicking myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Greg from ZONE 5:

One single ripe tomato last week; this week, 30 pounds. It's been my favorite Sci-Fi thriller!
Avatar 10:22am Wild Neil:

My heirloom tomatoes are rather small...like big golf balls...like small plum tomatoes....they are just ok...after all that....
Avatar 10:23am Brian in UK:

Aftermath is great misogynist pop. After that......
Avatar 10:25am Wild Neil:

@Joe-so thankful you put DATES on your playlists. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Greg from ZONE 5:

My cat's birthday, btw…
Avatar 10:26am Brian in UK:

Can hear lots of Jimmie Spheeris piano here and I thought he was influenced by Laura Nyro.
Avatar 10:28am βrian:

I usually prefer medium-size tomatoes, but this year we unknowingly planted some beefsteak monsters. Some well over 2 lbs each.

Bonne Anniversaire, Le Chat de Greg!
Avatar 10:29am Wild Neil:

I just want some half pound normal sized heirlooms next year....maybe the purple ones, they are supposed to be great tasting....yeah, beefsteaks are monsters....
Avatar 10:29am Sem Chumbo:

Two pounds! Gotta Day of the Triffids feel to it.
Are they Killer Tomatoes,@ βrian:?
Avatar 10:31am Sem Chumbo:

The Boston Monkey? Haven't done that since the spinal fusion.
  10:31am P-90:

You forgot to mention the Watusi
Avatar 10:32am Sem Chumbo:

Sorry, referring to the dance, the Spinal Fusion.

Breaking News. Killer Tomato Incident on the Isthmus. Freeform music fan says it just appeared one morning and there was no escape from the appartment.
Avatar 10:34am Wild Neil:

I just want one of the heirloom tomatoes they have at Wegmans to grow in my garden...but I am too lazy to grow from seed...must buy plants....
Avatar 10:35am Marcel M:

Yo Joe, people
Avatar 10:35am Cecile:

Heirlooms are yummy, but they are often fussy. My boss had a plant one year, she had to specially water and feed it.
Avatar 10:35am Joe McG:

@Greg: Happy birthday to your cat! @Sem: I like to do the Incapacitated.
Avatar 10:38am Cecile:

ha, Dan Baird. fun stuff.
Avatar 10:39am βrian:

We grow heirlooms, and they've done well. No particular care needed. Some plants have just now topped 6'4". This is the first time I've had the huge ones with good flavor. Time to break out the canning equipment.
Avatar 10:39am Cecile:

even though hearing it again, it's kind of creepy.
  10:40am P-90:

Haven't heard "...Period" in a while. Cute.
Avatar 10:40am Cecile:

Brian, she must have had a special snowflake heirloom, which knowing her, that makes sense. She never does anything the easy way.
Avatar 10:41am Cecile:

the whole teacher-student thing, I mean.
  10:42am melinda:

I gave up growing full-size tomatoes and just get whatever is at the farmers market, which is usually good.
Avatar 10:42am Joe McG:

  10:46am P-90:

Avatar 10:46am Brian in UK:

Joe was that a 'normal' Bearsville release. I seem to remember that it was a bit more rural label.
Avatar 10:47am βrian:

The Farmer's market here has gotten too expensive for some things, tomatoes among them.
Avatar 10:47am Joe McG:

@Brian: Yeah, disco was not too common on Bearsville!
Avatar 10:48am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Missed Paul Revere. Thanks, stupid "employment..."
Avatar 10:49am Wild Neil:

I planted my lettuce too close on the shady side of the cucumbers and zuchinni...so they are super stunted. My peppers are doing well however...organic red bells....its like a six inch pepper on an eight inch plant however!
  10:49am P-90:

Well, THAT was a segue...
  10:50am Listener Alexandra:

Amazing as ever, Joe! This morning's show is particularly appreciated :-)

Avatar 10:55am Cecile:

that is bad news, annie.
  10:55am P-90:

This Rex Allen goes way beyond "Running Bear". Lyrically. I mean. Musically, can't touch it.

@Sue - are you thinking of Lone Star?

Hi, Tim! Hi, Marcel! The part at the end where he's howling "where is my face?" is pretty chilling!
Avatar 11:03am Wild Neil:

The bass in this U@ song is epic. @Joe, was this a disc that came with NME newspaper??? I remember those!
Avatar 11:03am Brian in UK:

Reminds me of Gurf Morlix's song, 'Your Sister'.
Avatar 11:04am Marcel M:

@Joe: Indeed!
Avatar 11:04am Joe McG:

@Wild Neil: Yeah, I love these things. Full of little rarities.
Avatar 11:05am Cecile:

U2 could have been such an interesting band.
Avatar 11:06am Marc Francis:

I totally forgot U2 used to be good!
Avatar 11:06am Wild Neil:

@Joe-I used to have a flexi disk from Melody Maker that had Zodiac Mindwarp on it and some other stuff...NO IDEA where it is now.
@Cecile-I heard a theory that U2 took music ideas from the alt universe back in the early 80's and repackaged them into pop songs...
Avatar 11:08am Cecile:

Their first couple of albums weren't that pop. They were like this wild, swirling exuberant post-punk. They were actually part of the alt-universe at the time.
Avatar 11:09am Cecile:

I have a hard vinyl one with the best version of the Go-Betweens "I get caught out"

Our garlic is hanging in the garage now. No reports of vampires in the 'hood.

Is that David "Dawg Music" Grisman?
Avatar 11:17am Joe McG:

@Cecile: Yeah, that's the guy.

Both Rowan and Grissman became associated with bluegrass related projects. Rowan, for example, was the voice of Old

Just in time for Pink Floyd! Heya Joe and tomato growers. That seems to be the city-wide hobby in SacraTomato. You'd think, with the Contadina plant down the road, that people would be sick of tomatoes. But NOooooooo ....
Avatar 11:26am Joe McG:

Or perhaps guitars. Flute went to the bathroom.
Avatar 11:27am βrian:

Well, there are tomatoes, and there are tomatoes.

"Jon McGasko" -a relative? Or an imaginary Chris M. artifact?
  11:48am Dean:

Ima Gherkin, you mean, βrian?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Ken From Hyde Park:

I'd like to know who keeps hacking Chris M.'s birthday calendar. Russians, maybe? It's causing lots of birthday turmoil.
Avatar 11:49am Cecile:

this is interesting! Lots of US folk singers adapted British folk songs, haven't really heard a Brit-sounding version of a US folk song.
  11:52am P-90:

One of Chris M's little gags. Claim it's someone's birthday and watch everyone rush to post their well-wishes.

"...cover yourself over with something, it's going to be terrible!" LOL

Interesting back story to Lorrie Collins covering Johnny Cash's "Another Man Done Gone". In 1959, as a 17-year old, she married Johnny's manager and they gave her the song. A real shame Stu Carnall robbed the cradle, it ended the Collins Kids' career. Johnny didn't release the song until 1963.
