Never thought of this before but early Hip-Hop was more like Jazz whether it appropriated actual Jazz riffs or not.

I think there's an analogue between hip-hop of all eras and jazz...a lot more rappers these days essentially freestyling entire records in the studio...the free-improv of hip-hop?
