Gran Prix is wonderful and horrible.

Sam Segal:

Admittedly, I have never seen it, but I do love Maurice Jarre's score.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
Uncle Michael:

The score is great. I have affection for the film because I like Formula 1 racing. They get the period right because it was made in period. But it's a soap opera and the F1 cars are really F3 cars in drag. I saw it in its original theatrical release, and probably 20 times since then.

I just want the world to know that Sam Segal is a genuinely nice human being
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
Sam Segal:

Cool it, @NotSamSegal. If the listeners start thinking I'm *shudders* "nice," I'll lose all the cool-guy-cred I've worked so hard to cultivate!

Ike:

When I first volunteered for FMU in East Orange in the 90s, I was really happy to find that most of the DJs I met were genuinely really nice (especially Doug Schulkind, who was the wrangler of volunteers then), and not snobs who acted like they were too cool to meet a dorky listener. I've heard rumors that FMU DJs were snobbier and too cool to drool back in the 80s but don't know if that's true.

Hullo Sam!
Hallo UM!
All FMU DJs are international men and women of mystery.

Not Sam Segal:

Alright, fine, @SamSegal. Listeners, Sam Segal is a terrible person. The beat you hear right now? That's not a drum. That's Sam Segal kicking small children to express his disdain for humanity. He is, however a "cool guy" with lots of "cool-guy-cred." He's saving up his "cool-guy-cred" for the top-shelf prize at the arcade. He is now accepting donations of "cool-guy-cred," so if you have any lying around, send it Sam's way. Don't expect a thank-you note, though. Only nice guys send thank-you notes.

@Ike and @G, welcome!

Sam Segal:

@NotSamSegal is right, folks. I'm hoping to win this giant bean bag chair www.ultimatesheepskin.com... With that chair, I'll have all the cool-guy-cred a guy could ever need, and then I can start being nice to everyone!

Sam, the giant bean bag looks carnivorous, I'd throw it a steak first & see what happens.

If you play any more 12-inchers, Sam, I will call you my ruler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Ike:

Yep, gotta watch out for those carnivorous chairs: doctorwhogifs.tumblr.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Sam Segal:

Sorry, @Alf. I'll try to cool it on the foot-longs...after this next joint.

This Cline is getting serious attention today, rightly so. Just listened to Clifford Brown and strings...same vibe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
Sam Segal:

Heya, @Dean. The Cline record is stunning...listened to it in its entirety today and picking a favorite song to play on air was damn tough.
  11:18pm
Dean:

I expect it'll be on my list at the next record store visit. Good to see that his brother is playing with him.

Hey, Dean Martin...my namesake...really.
  11:23pm
Dean:

There's a great Winter & Winter record of popular music from Shanghai, Metropolis Shanghai: Showboat to China.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Sam Segal:

Ooo that sounds delightful, @Dean. Are these reinterpretations or original recordings?
  11:35pm
Dean:

The notes state that the recordings were made in 2005, but I believe this refers in some cases to the digitization of the (likely fragile) analog sources. OTOH, some of the artists identified are of our time: Fumio Yasuda, Alan Bern, etc. In other words, it's a mix of old and new. Pretty stunning.
