I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

I hope the AC is working over there!

Aloha Mayuko and dizzy listeners
Avatar 12:04pm fred:

Good afternoon Mayuko (and others). I had to make an emergency run to a nearby store because I had run out of ice cream. I came back just in time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm listener james from westwood:

Afternoon, Mayuko, and howdy all!! Brutally hot out here in the NYC area; hope Studio C isn't too bad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Good day, Mayuko! Hello to all Playverts!
Avatar 12:10pm fred:

@Mayuko: Jason Elbogen had issues with getting the clicky-star to show up on tracks whose titles where in Chinese. Any advice on how to work around that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm listener james from westwood:

"Playverts"! Now we know what's going on the first Play Vertigo T-shirt!
Avatar 12:14pm Mayuko:

Hola Dave B, coelacanth, fred, james and Doug!!! Thanks for tuning in! Too bad I can't bring in ice cream into the studio. Might get banned.
Avatar 12:18pm Mayuko:

fred, he needs to add some English alphabet to the title in order to have it the clicky star. Happened when I had titles only in Japanese, and fixed when I added their pronunciation. I thought of suggesting it, but then he started saying on mic how almost impossible it is to pronounce them, so I lost what to suggest, haha.
Avatar 12:18pm fred:

@ljfw: Great idea! There has already been a Mayuko-authored T-shirt (radio zombies) but I would love a T-shirt premium! Words optional
Avatar 12:19pm Mayuko:

But his wife should be able to help? His wife is Chinese or speaks Chinese, if I heard correctly? That was a great track anyway!
Avatar 12:20pm Mayuko:

I like that Playverts sounds like Pervert.
Avatar 12:22pm fred:

Maybe double quotes around the title would work? Depends on how Kenzo's code sorts whitespace from characters...
Avatar 12:24pm fred:

It was a great track, and now you can star it (he just added "a" in front of the title, but there has to be a better way)
Avatar 12:25pm Jason Elbogen:

Speak of the Devil! (in this case me).
Hi, all!
Avatar 12:26pm fred:

@Devil: I thought Mayuko could have some helpful insight
Avatar 12:27pm Jason Elbogen:

Coincidentally, this Tokyo Gyogyomu has no clicky-star!
Avatar 12:28pm fred:

It does have one, I just clicked it
Avatar 12:28pm Mayuko:

"" doesn't help, apparently.
Avatar 12:29pm Jason Elbogen:

ah now it appeared on my screen too.
Avatar 12:29pm fred:

Where did Tokyo Gyogyomu come from? I don't mean geographically, but as in "how come I haven't heard about them before"
Avatar 12:30pm Mayuko:

Oh! Sorry I was testing if "" helps! And hello Jason!! Glad you're here!
Avatar 12:32pm Jason Elbogen:

Mayuko--glad to be here and thanks for listening yesterday. I was a bit overwhelmed adjusting to the new equipment configuration in Studio C so I couldn't really interact with people.
Avatar 12:34pm Jason Elbogen:

I was looking for this Minami Deutschc CD in the new bin before my show yesterday but couldn't find it!
Avatar 12:37pm fred:

My wild guess: Kenzo's code is trying to ignore characters that are not common ones instead of ignoring whitespace and punctuation. Or it's not unicode compliant. Either way, I think it should be fixed
Avatar 12:37pm Mayuko:

Hmm, I thought Bryce might have taken it with him before you go on the air, but no sign of his here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm coelacanth:

-could always put " (chinese) "; " (japanese) "; etc. - before or after the title and artist characters....or is that in poor taste?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm coelacanth:

(not with the quote marks)
Avatar 12:41pm fred:

Every time I hear Minami Deutsch I try to check whether they'll be playing nearby. No luck so far (but I'm not on facebook)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Webhamster Henry:

Mi Mayuko - I keep forgetting you are on Saturdays now!
  12:42pm Sam Segal:

Hi Mayuko! Loving this.
Avatar 12:43pm Mayuko:

coelacanth, "(You guess the pronunciation)" before the title works more helpful for me I think.
Avatar 12:43pm Mayuko:

Hi Webhamster Henry, and Sam!! Thank you for tuning in!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm coelacanth:

oh, yes Mayuko. your system is perfect! ... i meant for others that may have no clue how to pronounce it. (as i wouldn't)
Avatar 12:50pm Mayuko:

I wanted to let the listeners know that the cover of "God Is God, Puke Is Puke" by Ultra Bidé cps-static.rovicorp.com... is Kuidaore Taro from Osaka. livedoor.blogimg.jp...
Avatar 12:51pm Mayuko:

I just thought it's funny that their music is noisy and sounds pretty serious but the cover is Kuidaore Taro...
Avatar 12:52pm Dave B:

@fred - I think kanji and kana are double byte files. The Kenzo backend probably can't decipher
Avatar 12:57pm fred:

@Dave B: nah, double-byte is a thing of the past. Most of the site is unicode by now, I really think it's an oversight, some "ischar" somewhere that only handles ASCII-7 or (gasp) 8859-1
Avatar 1:05pm Dave B:

Hey - isn't this O-bon time of year?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Ike:

Avatar 1:15pm Jason Elbogen:

Thanks Mayuko! So, is Studio C unbearably hot right now? I think today is hotter than yesterday...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm coelacanth:

Mayuko i need to get to the bank before it closes. i may melt into a human-bicycle puddle on the street and not make it back before you're finished.
Thank you!

Avatar 1:19pm fred:

@Dave B: I'm no expert, but everything looks like proper UTF-8 from here. I really think it's a small thing
Avatar 1:19pm Mayuko:

Oh yeah! Today should be the first day of Obon, Dave!

Hellos Ike!! Take care, coelacanth!
Avatar 1:21pm Jason Elbogen:

By the way, as a musical recommendation: Last time I checked, the library had a cd-r burn of the Vanity Records box (the great Japanese label you probably know about that existed between 1978-80 I think)
Avatar 1:22pm Mayuko:

Jason, I think you might be in the hottest hours in Studio C. When I get in here around 11am it's not so bad, then it gradually gets more and more boiling towards the end of my show 2pm.
Avatar 1:31pm fred:

I knew about Jan Jelinek (and didn't like his music much), but who is Masayoshi Fujiita? From the little I found, she looks very interesting
Avatar 1:32pm Mayuko:

& thank you for the recommend!! I'll def check that boxset out! I only knew some artists from Vanity but didn't know about the label until recent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Doug Schulkind:

Give the Drummer Radio & Sauna!
Avatar 1:33pm fred:

Mary Lattimore! I really need to see her live, like last year
Avatar 1:38pm fred:

Speaking of harp, I really like Shizuku Aosaki; well, live at least (the only record I have is nowhere near her live performances).
Avatar 1:39pm Mayuko:

If I ever become friends with Jan Jelinek, he should buy me a beer to make up for my huge disappointment that Ursula Bogner didn't exist! haha. I liked HER music a lot!
I didn't know much about Masayoshi either but apparently he's a vibraphone player based in Berlin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm melinda:

hi everyone
Avatar 1:44pm fred:

Amazing how everyone still goes to Berlin. I thought Prague would have outhyped it years ago. Rents are still so cheap compared to London or Paris, I don't know how they have resisted gentrification so well
Avatar 1:45pm Mayuko:

Hi melinda! Thank you for tuning in!
Avatar 1:47pm fred:

Akiko Yano! That's bringing back some memories... Yeah, I'm old (not that old: I was only 5 when that came out, still, I remember her)
Avatar 1:49pm Mayuko:

It does seem like many Japanese people are there & still head to Berlin, maybe they know and help each other entering/staying there? I came to NYC knowing absolutely nobody and it certainly helped to get to know other Japanese people here...
Avatar 1:58pm fred:

I think Berlin remains big enough that people still think they can help another without jeopardizing their life, at least in the artistic world. Which is not the case in Paris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Bah, tuned in late! Happy vertigo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm listener james from westwood:

WFMU DJ Stork emigrated there a bunch of years ago, when it was likely much cheaper.
Thanks for the fine music, Mayuko!
Avatar 2:01pm fred:

@ljfw: looks like you can still rent a 3 room flat there for what would get you a cupboard in Paris
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Doug Schulkind:

Stork (who has had an open invitation to join the Drummer Stream) is in, I believe, Cologne.
Avatar 2:02pm Mayuko:

Now I feel like I should probably move to Berlin myself! Thank you all for listening! See you next week.
  7:13pm mzm:

Got back from cold spot weather Europe yesterday. I miss warm breakfast tea in the sub-60 degree morning. What is going on here Mayu?? Hate NYC weather, hate NYC people but love NYC people.
Avatar 10:47pm Mayuko:

Lucky you, to have got away from this weather even for a short while, mzm! Love NYC and summer time but hate this heat! Thanks for listening in any case.
