I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

There's a nice Kink Gong release called "Minang Kabau Indonesia", probably a re-release of a tape. There's a very lovely track there, just voice and flute, a nice change from the usual, but related too

This is Chiyoko Satoh track is nice.

I don't know enough to really talk about Onchi, Michael... He's a Japanese wood cut print artist from early 20th century and said to be one of the pioneers of abstract expressionism in Japan or something like that. Here's some more images of his work:dassai2.p2.weblife.me...

The weird thing is that when I was growing up in France, my parents liked her Brel cover and mellow late stuff. I didn't like that, so I ignored her for years. It was a shock to hear her earlier work on WFMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
fred:

I guess Ill Bone liked Siouxsie
Avatar 12:36pm
Mayuko:

@fred I should check her stuff out more. I just happened to hear it because this album I played got reissued. Will start with earlier work, then!

Kouhei Matsunaga seems to be a really nice guy. Second-hand info, I only know people who know him, but they all like him a lot

That's good to know that a good musician is also a nice person! I wonder where he lives now? Germany??

I still remember an old Village Voice article from the 1990s about, I think, Archers of Loaf, and the headline was something like "GG;GB" -- good guys, good band.

Archers of Loaf had one great song!

Here's a video of Suwa Onbashira festival. www.youtube.com...
It was explained in Japanese at the beginning of the track, sounded like they were asking for permission from gods to take out the trees from a mountain and enshrine them. Then people ride the tree logs and slide down as ritual. It's said to be the most dangerous shinto festival in Japan as people get injured or die often while riding the logs.

Wow.

I really live that Oguchi Daihachi track. I saw Kodo a couple of times; these were memorable, but so tame in comparison
Avatar 1:37pm
Jason Elbogen:

Mayuko--I'm curious why you don't do a 3 hour show? [Daniel Blumen mentioned you also live in Eastern Queens, so your commute is longer than your show! Unless you drive?]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm
fred:

Wow, that was amazing music from Mongolia. Draws connections to more southern vocal styles I didn't know existed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm

(archers of loaf had at least 2 Great albums, beginning to end, and 1 Great ep.)

fred, I just thought that vocal style sounded similar to the female singer in the preceding Kiyari Taiko, beautiful song indeed!
