I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Second! Hi Michael!
  11:57am mdashkin:

Hi Mayuko. Will you talk about Kōshirō Onchi a little bit?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm listener james from westwood:

Noonday workday Saturday greetings, Mayuko and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi Mayuko! Hi everyhuman!
Avatar 12:05pm Jesse K:

Hi Mayuko! I finally caught on the new time slot, glad to hear you on Saturday afternoon!
Avatar 12:06pm fred:

Good afternoon Mayuko and listeners
Avatar 12:07pm Mayuko:

Hello james, Doug, Jesse and fred!!! So happy to have you all here!
Avatar 12:14pm fred:

There's a nice Kink Gong release called "Minang Kabau Indonesia", probably a re-release of a tape. There's a very lovely track there, just voice and flute, a nice change from the usual, but related too
Avatar 12:14pm Jason Elbogen:

This is Chiyoko Satoh track is nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm doctorjazz:

Hi all!
Avatar 12:19pm Mayuko:

I don't know enough to really talk about Onchi, Michael... He's a Japanese wood cut print artist from early 20th century and said to be one of the pioneers of abstract expressionism in Japan or something like that. Here's some more images of his work:dassai2.p2.weblife.me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Greetings, Mayuko and Vergonites!
Avatar 12:20pm fred:

I love Nina Simone
Avatar 12:20pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon Jason, doctorjazz and Ken! Thank you for tuning in!!

I don't know anything about soul music, but her voice gave me goosebumps at the second I heard it, fred! and thanks for the Indonesian tip, I'll look for Minang Kabau Indonesia!!
Avatar 12:27pm Mayuko:

Hello Jeff G! I'm having lots of Drummer streamers support here today!! <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Jeff Golick:

It's how we do.
Avatar 12:34pm fred:

The weird thing is that when I was growing up in France, my parents liked her Brel cover and mellow late stuff. I didn't like that, so I ignored her for years. It was a shock to hear her earlier work on WFMU
Avatar 12:36pm fred:

I guess Ill Bone liked Siouxsie
Avatar 12:36pm Mayuko:

@fred I should check her stuff out more. I just happened to hear it because this album I played got reissued. Will start with earlier work, then!

Avatar 12:40pm Mayuko:

Hola Dave B!!!
Avatar 12:40pm fred:

That P.S.F. sound...
Avatar 12:45pm Mayuko:

That whole album of Michio Kadotani is decayingly beautiful (and the album title is "decaying telepathy")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm coelacanth:

Good afternoon Mayuko and Playverts!
Avatar 12:53pm Mayuko:

Hello coelacanth! Glad you're still staying solid and not melting. Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm coelacanth:

- semisolid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm coelacanth:

(i should find out if Doug has a copyright on "playvert"...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Doug Schulkind:

"Playvert" is open source. Let it spread like a wildfire of love.
Avatar 1:13pm fred:

In Infinite Jest, a character kills cats and dogs and says "there, there"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm coelacanth:

Thank you Doug. you are a beacon to the solution; a boon to humanity.
Avatar 1:24pm fred:

Kouhei Matsunaga seems to be a really nice guy. Second-hand info, I only know people who know him, but they all like him a lot
Avatar 1:26pm Mayuko:

That's good to know that a good musician is also a nice person! I wonder where he lives now? Germany??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Jeff Golick:

I still remember an old Village Voice article from the 1990s about, I think, Archers of Loaf, and the headline was something like "GG;GB" -- good guys, good band.
Avatar 1:31pm Jason Elbogen:

Archers of Loaf had one great song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Jeff Golick:

"Web in Front?"
Avatar 1:32pm Jason Elbogen:

yes that was it!
Avatar 1:34pm Mayuko:

Here's a video of Suwa Onbashira festival. www.youtube.com...
It was explained in Japanese at the beginning of the track, sounded like they were asking for permission from gods to take out the trees from a mountain and enshrine them. Then people ride the tree logs and slide down as ritual. It's said to be the most dangerous shinto festival in Japan as people get injured or die often while riding the logs.

Avatar 1:36pm fred:

I really live that Oguchi Daihachi track. I saw Kodo a couple of times; these were memorable, but so tame in comparison
Avatar 1:37pm Jason Elbogen:

Mayuko--I'm curious why you don't do a 3 hour show? [Daniel Blumen mentioned you also live in Eastern Queens, so your commute is longer than your show! Unless you drive?]
Avatar 1:42pm fred:

Wow, that was amazing music from Mongolia. Draws connections to more southern vocal styles I didn't know existed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm coelacanth:

(archers of loaf had at least 2 Great albums, beginning to end, and 1 Great ep.)
Avatar 1:46pm Mayuko:

Haha! Jason, that's a good point I didn't want to realize.
Avatar 1:47pm Mayuko:

fred, I just thought that vocal style sounded similar to the female singer in the preceding Kiyari Taiko, beautiful song indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Doug Schulkind:

At other radio stations, you get the same-old stuff. Here, you get the Samo.
Avatar 1:51pm Mayuko:

This is my last track today - feels to me like it went away so quickly!!! Thank you all for listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm listener james from westwood:

Me too! Thanks for the delightful, wide-ranging show!
Avatar 1:59pm fred:

Another great show, Mayuko! Thanks! And Jason does have a point, your show should last longer (than your commute, I'll take that as a pretext)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm coelacanth:

Thanks Mayuko! Excellent as always.
Avatar 2:05pm Mayuko:

I think I can start doing a longer show here and there once the studio C cools down a bit, haha. Thanks again everyone for tuning in! Have a beautiful week!
