Copyediting happily and enjoying a ridiculously temperate summer day!

Carmichael:

Heya Tony. I'll be in Portland this weekend, dropping off the youth at college. Will have time to record shop. As always, recommendations are welcome!

hi Tony. hi everyone.
Avatar 12:07pm

Hola, Carmichael and Jtothek!!

great timing!

Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael: My fave Portland record shops are Crossroads and Exiled in the Southeast, and Musique Plastique and Little Axe in the Northeast. But, frankly, for an out-of-towner, most all our record shops are worth a visit.

One of my abiding memories of my college years (87–91) in Boston was seeing Sleep Chamber stickers all around the Mass Ave/Newbury St area near Tower and Newbury Comics.
Avatar 12:17pm
Tony Coulter:

This Sleep Chamber stuff was recorded live on WMFO on January 30, 1985.
Avatar 12:18pm
Tony Coulter:

Checking now I see WFMO is in Medford, Mass.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
listener james from westwood:

Maybe that's when they stickered the heck out of nearby Beantown!
Avatar 12:24pm
Tony Coulter:

I can remember seeing Missing Foundation stickers and spray-painted graffiti all over NYC, in the late '80s (I think).
Avatar 12:24pm
Tony Coulter:

Also, there's a current Portland band whose posters seem to be everywhere, to the point that their name has been branded on my brain, even though I have no idea what they sound like. They're called Nasalrod.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
Jeff Golick:

I am enjoying this tape. Is this what the kids call vaporwave?
Avatar 12:33pm
Tony Coulter:

More like miasmawave.
Avatar 12:39pm
Tony Coulter:

While I am lowercasing the 'o' in "of," I can't seem to do the same with "Ov."
Avatar 12:42pm
Tony Coulter:

I imagine it's obvious, but: The tape on now is the one on your right in the photo above the playlist.
Avatar 12:48pm
annie:

(it would be o' )
Avatar 12:49pm
annie:

oops, my bad. i mis-read that; i'm going back to the comics..
Avatar 12:52pm
Tony Coulter:

Umm. I was too scared to write "sacred." Finally got my courage up....

Tony Coulter:

Heya, Cecile!
Avatar 1:04pm
V Priceless:

RIP Gilli Smyth, btw
Avatar 1:07pm
Tony Coulter:

Indeed. Her contribution to Gong was huge, and often underappreciated.
Avatar 1:08pm
Tony Coulter:

D'Archangel II (on now) was some kind of Edward Ka-Spel / LPD side-project.
Avatar 1:10pm
Tony Coulter:

Jarboe, of course, is in the Swans....
Avatar 1:19pm
Tony Coulter:

Think I will definitely play some Gilli Smyth on my show next week. I'm a big fan of her first album, "Mother."
Avatar 1:20pm
Chris from DC:

Hey hey. Liking the Strobe Radio thing here.
Avatar 1:21pm
Tony Coulter:

Gabba gabba hey, Chris from DC!
Avatar 1:24pm
Cecile:

I think Tom Furgas had a tape zine in OH?
  1:25pm
Mark Williams:

I have a good track record of checking in when an Insane Music comp is playing...
Avatar 1:26pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: That does ring a distant bell -- think you may be right about that.
Avatar 1:27pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mark!

Well, there are so many great Insane Music tapes -- so the odds are good....
Avatar 1:29pm
Cecile:

was it "own the whole world" or something like that?
Avatar 1:29pm
Tony Coulter:

Yes, Muteual Mortuary do spell "Mutual" as "Muteual" -- I guess they're mutually mute.
Avatar 1:31pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: Not sure....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
Jeff Golick:

Kinda wish it was actually The Way of the Scared, but I guess that doesn't move as many units.
Avatar 1:34pm
Tony Coulter:

Los Paranos (on now) was led by Christophe Petchanatz of Klimperei fame.
Avatar 1:35pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Jeff G: I guess if Woody Allen made an industrial tape, that's what it would be called.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
JtotheK:

enjoying the tapes, will be tuned in the rest of the show via the app. thanks tony!
  1:39pm
Mark Williams:

Bill Pritchard is an interesting one. I remember he had some tracks on a Third Mind compilation and then I bought the LP that followed it, at which point he was mainly just playing guitar a la a Cherry Red'esque indie pop auteur. He has such a smooth voice.
Avatar 1:39pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, JtotheK! Glad to know your ears are here!
Avatar 1:41pm
Cecile:

Tom Furgas was in OWW issue 8. I might still have the tape for it.
Avatar 1:43pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Mark Williams: Pritchard does seem like he could have been an indiepop / C86 / dream pop contender.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm
doctorjazz:

Too busy to post, but enjoying the show.
Avatar 1:44pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks -- and hello -- doctorjazz!
Avatar 1:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Interestingly, Violeta Dinescu (on now) was not coming out of the cassette underground scene. She's an academically trained Romanian electroacoustic composer.
Avatar 1:56pm
Tony Coulter:

Big City Orchestra has such a varied sound -- never know what to expect from them.
  2:01pm
Mark Williams:

a melodica! Is that a first on an Insane Music comp, Tony? I like this track (Opera Multi Steel).
Avatar 2:02pm
Tony Coulter:

Could be a melodica first, yes. Puts me in mind of Pascal Comelade.
Avatar 2:05pm
Tony Coulter:

I've got an Opera Multi Steel 12" EP around here somewhere. Rather absurdly I've yet to listen to it. It's probably great.
  2:06pm
Mark Williams:

wheel it out, Tony!
Avatar 2:09pm
Tony Coulter:

M.A.L. = Daniel Malempré (guitar, bass, synth)
Avatar 2:16pm
Tony Coulter:

By the by, Malempré is a frequent collaborator of Alain Neffe's. He plays on a bunch of Human Flesh tracks, for example.
Avatar 2:23pm
Cecile:

what a riff here!
Avatar 2:24pm
Tony Coulter:

Quite a track title too!
Avatar 2:36pm
Cecile:

this needs to be reissued.
Avatar 2:38pm
Tony Coulter:

Some of the tracks are on this recent-ish vinyl comp of his stuff: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 2:40pm
Chris from DC:

Yay Heldon
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:40pm
listener james from westwood:

Really dug that M.A.L. tape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm
Jeff Golick:

I also dug. And my late grandfather went by the name "Mal," so there's that resonance, too. (I don't think it would've been his cup of tea, though.)
Avatar 2:43pm
Tony Coulter:

M.A.L.'s '70s stuff is great too -- very krautrockish.
Avatar 2:46pm
Tony Coulter:

In fact, he claims Manuel Göttsching copped his sound.
Avatar 2:53pm
V Priceless:

thanx Tony! Cool show!
Avatar 2:55pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, VP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm
Jeff Golick:

Have some Heldon/Pinhas, but not Third. Need to remedy!
Thanks, Tony!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:59pm
listener james from westwood:

Always a fun trip into the tape vaults! See ya next week!
Avatar 3:00pm

Thanks, everyone! See you next time.....
