This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Explorer Hyde! Warm welcome!
Avatar 7:09pm

Hello Hyde!
Avatar 7:11pm
hyde:

this musical theme seems appropriate to me, as this week i discovered that there was an (undoubtedly true) internet conspiracy theory that President Obama is a clone of the Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten!

(hiya, ndbob!)
Avatar 7:13pm
hyde:

in fact, i am now starting to suspect that this radio show may also be involved in this conspiracy
Avatar 7:13pm
Flash Strap:

Well if that don't beat all! There's a conspiracy theory I can see Sun Ra getting down with, albeit from a totally opposite perspective

Hi all! So stoked to be listening from the very start this week

Tonight we are all brand Nubians!
Avatar 7:21pm

Avatar 7:22pm
Flash Strap:

this recording is special i swear
Avatar 7:22pm
Flash Strap:

i never meant it with all those other recordings
Avatar 7:23pm
Flash Strap:

seriously this was recorded live in 1993 at the chicago planetarium in memoriam for Sun Ra, who had just died, and it is probably my favorite Cohran album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm
Little Danny:

Oh yes, African Skies is special. *All* of Cohran's recordings over the decades hold up
Avatar 7:27pm
hyde:

the harp part is fantastic
Avatar 7:29pm

"New" artist to me too and this is beautiful.
Avatar 7:37pm
hyde:

from the For Future Reference Dept: cool video of Josèfe Marie Verna, the harpist on that Cohran track doing a solo version of what sounds on a brief listen to me like what she is playing on White Nile, though here it's called "Variations Pastorales sur un Vieu Noël (Thème Improvisations)" www.youtube.com...
Avatar 7:39pm
Flash Strap:

i will check that out Hyde, sounds amazing
Avatar 7:40pm
Flash Strap:

I should have mentioned that Ragab is the drummer, and also that these recordings were done in Heliopolis
Avatar 7:42pm

there was always little doubt there would be at least some Salah Raghab tonite! love that guy's records.

g...well, i'm all moved out!
Avatar 8:29pm
hyde:

going back a bit, but holy crap. the musicians on that Mtume LP! whoa.
Avatar 8:31pm
Flash Strap:

I know, what a lineup!
Avatar 8:34pm
Flash Strap:

what continuum was that LD? I'm blanking on what I may have said. Musicians with which Ra felt a great affinity?
Avatar 8:37pm
geezerette:

coel, halfway there then! :)
Avatar 8:37pm
geezerette:

I love this album!
Avatar 8:39pm
Flash Strap:

ME TOO, G! Alice is second to none in my book

this whole set is very Nile themed
Avatar 8:42pm
hyde:

i think that Alice Coltrane really does not get nearly enough credit for the late 60's/early 70's run of Huntington Ashram Monastery /Ptah, the El Daoud/Journey in Satchidananda /Universal Consciousness LP's on Impulse. that is a serious 4 LP stretch of greatness.
Avatar 8:44pm
Flash Strap:

Journey in Satchidananda is a top ten LP for me.

And that run of greatness hardly ends there! although it does shift gears a bit
Avatar 8:44pm
Flash Strap:

I totally agree, is my point, Hyde
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
Little Danny:

@flash: oh shit, I think I might have been mistaking your Duke Ellington comparison to Les Baxter rather than Sun Ra.
Avatar 8:50pm
hyde:

heh. and i agree the Alice Coltrane greatness doesn't end there! but to me, those particular 4 albums in a run is like a contemporaneous jazz/world music version of the Beggar's Banquet-Let It Bleed-Sticky Fingers-Exile on Main Street Stones run. I just wish she got as much recognition for it.
Avatar 8:52pm
Flash Strap:

I wonder if I misspoke! I am a little out of it... Anyway, Ra loved Les, Les loved Duke, and Duke's exoticism was VERY comparable to the aims of Afrocentrism, in that it sought to forge new kinds of black identity... so there's a very tempting subject, triangulating those three
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
coelacanth:

g@8:37 -Thanks for asking. the fact is, i'm all moved in; but i'm suspending unpacking and getting internet service... if the landlord hasn't bought 5 storm windows by october, i'm moving again!
(which is a little worse than any nightmares i'm likely to have)
Avatar 8:54pm
Flash Strap:

I stand with you on that Hyde. It really is a stunning run, and she's still (tho improvements have been made of late) mostly discussed in terms relative to her husband or her collaborators
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm
coelacanth:

that track was sublime
Avatar 8:56pm
Flash Strap:

That sounds like Hassle City, Coelacanth! Hope it settles right for you
Avatar 8:58pm
Flash Strap:

Glad I could work some Eddie Harris into this one
Avatar 8:59pm
geezerette:

Evan & Hyde, yes,I love Journey in Satchidananda too. I listened to Alice Coltrane a lot at one point.
The Coltranes were deeply spiritual, it's all in the music. I feel so at peace and energized when I play those records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm
coelacanth:

Thanks Flash. i really like this new apartment, but it's more drafty than a tent. it'll end up costing 3-4 hundred dollars/mo for heat the way it is.
-i'm a damn fool for not realizing this right away.

for yourself, even a small one. Makes total sense not to unpack.

More Pharoah comin' up, Geezerette! Somehow, no Yusef or Don Cherry tonight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
coelacanth:

g - i don't relay this to be bellyaching, but because i think it's kind of funny...in my bedroom there was a window open that i assumed had a screen down and a few nights ago when it got cooler i went to put the window down and noticed there is no screen. it's one of the ones that does have a storm, and it was down!
- it leaks that much that i thought it was open!
...but that i don't mind fixing myself. it just needs some putty & maybe glue.
Avatar 9:22pm
hyde:

@c oof. good to get on that before winter!

Avatar 9:34pm

Avatar 9:34pm
northguineahills:

I was just going through a history of philosophy podcasts, and finally got to the Islamist traditions, where Tauhid in a philosophical context was discussed, and I automatically had the Pharoah album playing in my head (didn't even have to turn on any music!) I love this album!
Avatar 9:34pm
hyde:

@Flash hmm, never have seen that one...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
coelacanth:

(taking notes!) -i'm not sure i even know a Buster Keaton movie by name, or have seen one in its entirety...but i know some scenes and the basic vibe, i think.

and yes, Flash, but incredible enough for many listenings!
Avatar 9:38pm

Tauhid by Pharoah Sanders is great, tho i admit the record of his that i am most wedded to is Karma. that's the one i found when i was in high school.
