Flash Strap - my daughter (one month this week!) and I were tuned into your program earlier, but I was not able to comment. Enjoyed the show! She seemed to like the Sun Ra...

and Danny - I've been trying to stay caught up on your shows via archive, the Masqueraders 'How' 45 you spun a few weeks ago was bonkers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Little Danny:

Oh yes it is J2tK. One of my favorite Detroit soul sides. With a very specific low fidelity. You have good taste
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:13pm

i looked it up to see what label it was on, saw La Beat, realized immediately it'd be out of my budget (if one were to ever turn up), further research confirmed this!

@danny - i was casually into soul 45s a while back, then got much more into them maybe 6-7 years ago...and there's just so much out there to discover. i'm lucky to have learned a ton from local folks here (midwest). and of course Mr Fine Wine's show. and the F16C blog. and i dig a lot of the popcorn 45s you spin, too! learn something new every week, and add to my 45 want list every week.

a friend of mine that had a weekly soul 45 night spin (he passed away last year, I miss him a lot) would have me guest from time to time, and he was fond of popcorn 45s... called it clippity-clop music.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Little Danny:

Hey Kris, I'm about to play a Charles Spurling 45. Can you tell me its time signature plz!
  10:43pm
Dean:

Just tuning in...listening through both ears to Tony McManus out of my stereo, CBF through the Chromebook.

My son came home today with a clarinet, an instrument I played when I was roughly his age (and then tenor sax and then bass clarinet). He managed to produce sounds. I'm hoping he leans toward Giuffre or Peplowski, but Brotzmann would work, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Doug Schulkind:

Give him some Perry Robinson records, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Little Danny:

Hey Dean! Giuffre is tops for sure.
  10:45pm
Dean:

Oh, hell, yeah.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
JtotheK:

@Dean -- cool! would Eric Dolphy be on the approved sounds list for bass clarinet?
  10:47pm
Dean:

I don't want to slight Peplowski, either. He has a huge catalog, much of it on Concord and, accordingly, Concord-ish. But he has also recorded on a number of obscure labels, where he does really great stuff. For instance, tonight I played a 2013 record of his including a version of Brian Wilson's Caroline, No (on sax). Really gorgeous.

Dolphy? Baby steps. We'll get there...

Re: band names, I was reading a presentation at U Chicago about greenhouse gases, in which a slide appears titled, "The ice albedo feedback." I have no idea what it means, but if somebody records an album by that name I'll buy it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Little Danny:

Man it took me forever to find this Burton 45. What do you know about him Kris? Houston organ player/bandleader, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Little Danny:

If I remember correctly from that Vangelis LP, Albedo is like a glare or reflective glare
  11:08pm
Dean:

That Vangelis album wasn't half bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Little Danny:

I know!
Avatar 11:13pm
Kris Holmes:

you know, he's hard to research, i've never got much about him, the fact that a few of his early records are on Houston labels would suggest he was out of that area, kind of a mystery man. Great organist though.
Avatar 11:25pm
Kris Holmes:

i'm not hearing what the playlist suggests i should be hearing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm

Does anyone know anything about Silvestre Mendez? Incredibly obscure (to me), his records have stunning Latin jazz/Afro-Cuban-roots arrangements
