Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Avatar 10:03pm Kris Holmes:

This is a great Willie Bobo LP
Avatar 10:04pm Little Danny:

Hello Alex, JtotheK, hyde, Kris. Welcome to the sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm JtotheK:

Flash Strap - my daughter (one month this week!) and I were tuned into your program earlier, but I was not able to comment. Enjoyed the show! She seemed to like the Sun Ra...
Avatar 10:05pm Little Danny:

Indeed it is Kris, one of his most consistent on Verve
Avatar 10:05pm coelacanth:

Danny, just a quick bike ride!
Avatar 10:06pm geezerette:

Hey Danny! Listening while working. This is SO much better than coffee!

Evan, no kidding! What Danny said.
Avatar 10:06pm Flash Strap:

that very much pleases me to hear, JtotheK!

Thanks, G!
Avatar 10:07pm Flash Strap:

i know this track in my blood!
Avatar 10:08pm Little Danny:

Oh that is awesome geez. Do you live outside of the U.S. geez? Or just just working a night shift?
Avatar 10:08pm geezerette:

...JtotheK: Congratulations!
Avatar 10:08pm Little Danny:

of course you do Flash!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm JtotheK:

and Danny - I've been trying to stay caught up on your shows via archive, the Masqueraders 'How' 45 you spun a few weeks ago was bonkers.
Avatar 10:11pm Little Danny:

Oh yes it is J2tK. One of my favorite Detroit soul sides. With a very specific low fidelity. You have good taste
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm JtotheK:

i looked it up to see what label it was on, saw La Beat, realized immediately it'd be out of my budget (if one were to ever turn up), further research confirmed this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm JtotheK:

@geezerette -- thanks!
Avatar 10:15pm Little Danny:

Kirchin dedication to Evan of Explorer's Room. Feel well, brother.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm melinda:

hi all!
Avatar 10:17pm Little Danny:

welcome Melinda - thanks for being here!
Avatar 10:17pm Flash Strap:

Thanks man. Feelin' better with this insanely good track in my head
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm JtotheK:

@danny - i was casually into soul 45s a while back, then got much more into them maybe 6-7 years ago...and there's just so much out there to discover. i'm lucky to have learned a ton from local folks here (midwest). and of course Mr Fine Wine's show. and the F16C blog. and i dig a lot of the popcorn 45s you spin, too! learn something new every week, and add to my 45 want list every week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm JtotheK:

hi melinda!
Avatar 10:21pm Kris Holmes:

soul 45s ruined my life
Avatar 10:22pm Little Danny:

Thanks JtotheK. Last three or four years I've really been dipping into that popcorn sound
Avatar 10:23pm Little Danny:

@Kris haha we need to form an AA-style framework and support group
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm JtotheK:

a friend of mine that had a weekly soul 45 night spin (he passed away last year, I miss him a lot) would have me guest from time to time, and he was fond of popcorn 45s... called it clippity-clop music.
Avatar 10:24pm Kris Holmes:

i thought it was called w*x*d**my?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Can't wait to hear the wreckage of your life on live radio, Kris Holmes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm JtotheK:

@Kris Holmes - i lurk at that site, have a membership but never post. i used to post over at s**lstr*t years ago.
Avatar 10:26pm Little Danny:

w*x*d*m*y is that bad friend always telling us to buy more records
Avatar 10:26pm Kris Holmes:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm JtotheK:

hi D*ug!
Avatar 10:26pm Little Danny:

POTUS Doug! Do you know this Brothers Sandole? It's hella obscure
Avatar 10:27pm Kris Holmes:

soul strut has a lot to be responsible for!!
Avatar 10:27pm hyde:

this is all great. but i am sad, for i must go. but then again, i'll be right happy when i call up the archive.

thanks, LD! night all.
Avatar 10:29pm Little Danny:

g'night hyde, we were honored to have ya
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Doug Schulkind:

Don't have that one, LD. But I did just get my hands on Joe Maneri's The Music of Cleopatra on the Nile. Oh my fookin Pharaoh is it good!
Avatar 10:29pm Kris Holmes:

Doug, i can't wait to ship the other 8000 or so life wreckers roughly 9500 miles to play those on live radio & at gigs again too.
Avatar 10:30pm Little Danny:

Oh yes it is. One of the great budget label jazzers
Avatar 10:30pm coelacanth:

good night hyde
Avatar 10:32pm Kris Holmes:

but this morning i said to Misa "I hope I have enough records with me to begin doing weekly radio again already", she just rolled her eyes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Doug Schulkind:

You'll have to spin some 15-minute 45s, Kris.
Avatar 10:38pm Kris Holmes:

play em on 33
Avatar 10:43pm Little Danny:

Hey Kris, I'm about to play a Charles Spurling 45. Can you tell me its time signature plz!
  10:43pm Dean:

Just tuning in...listening through both ears to Tony McManus out of my stereo, CBF through the Chromebook.

My son came home today with a clarinet, an instrument I played when I was roughly his age (and then tenor sax and then bass clarinet). He managed to produce sounds. I'm hoping he leans toward Giuffre or Peplowski, but Brotzmann would work, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Doug Schulkind:

Give him some Perry Robinson records, Dean.
Avatar 10:45pm Little Danny:

Hey Dean! Giuffre is tops for sure.
  10:45pm Dean:

Oh, hell, yeah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm JtotheK:

@Dean -- cool! would Eric Dolphy be on the approved sounds list for bass clarinet?
  10:47pm Dean:

I don't want to slight Peplowski, either. He has a huge catalog, much of it on Concord and, accordingly, Concord-ish. But he has also recorded on a number of obscure labels, where he does really great stuff. For instance, tonight I played a 2013 record of his including a version of Brian Wilson's Caroline, No (on sax). Really gorgeous.

Dolphy? Baby steps. We'll get there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm JtotheK:

like this Vondells!
Avatar 10:49pm Dano59:

also just tuning in... long day. Cool blue flame washing over me...
Avatar 10:50pm Little Danny:

Ah, Dano, you've found the right place for immersion
Avatar 10:50pm Kris Holmes:

it's in three four time
Avatar 10:51pm Dano59:

serious Sam Cook vibe here
Avatar 10:51pm Dano59:

Avatar 10:52pm Little Danny:

Thanks Kris. Thought it was some sorta exotic waltz 25/22 or 74/33 time or something
Avatar 10:53pm Kris Holmes:

flipside is great uptempo raver
Avatar 10:54pm Little Danny:

Oof, never even bothered to listen to flipside
  10:54pm Dean:

Okay, turned off the Tony McManus as he wrapped up the guitar transcription to the Chaconne for Partita no. 2.
Avatar 10:55pm Little Danny:

my fave Doc Bagby side
Avatar 10:56pm Little Danny:

@Dean - this set'll get your brow a bit lower methinks
  10:56pm Dean:

A brow's a brow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Doug Schulkind:

Flipside Oof

That's a great name for a radio show.
  10:57pm Dean:

It's not as if Bach sat around thinking, "Shit, ain't I the high-browest motherfucker there is?!"
Avatar 11:01pm Kris Holmes:

early Willard!!
Avatar 11:02pm Dano59:

this tune, a/k/a ... ?
  11:02pm Dean:

Re: band names, I was reading a presentation at U Chicago about greenhouse gases, in which a slide appears titled, "The ice albedo feedback." I have no idea what it means, but if somebody records an album by that name I'll buy it.
Avatar 11:02pm Little Danny:

Man it took me forever to find this Burton 45. What do you know about him Kris? Houston organ player/bandleader, right?
Avatar 11:07pm Little Danny:

If I remember correctly from that Vangelis LP, Albedo is like a glare or reflective glare
  11:08pm Dean:

That Vangelis album wasn't half bad.
Avatar 11:08pm Little Danny:

I know!
Avatar 11:13pm Kris Holmes:

you know, he's hard to research, i've never got much about him, the fact that a few of his early records are on Houston labels would suggest he was out of that area, kind of a mystery man. Great organist though.
Avatar 11:25pm Kris Holmes:

i'm not hearing what the playlist suggests i should be hearing.
Avatar 11:26pm Little Danny:

Does anyone know anything about Silvestre Mendez? Incredibly obscure (to me), his records have stunning Latin jazz/Afro-Cuban-roots arrangements
  11:33pm Dean:

Might this be the same SM? http://oskicat.berkeley.edu/record=b11079144~S1

Mexican Cuban music?
Avatar 11:35pm Little Danny:

Man I don't know. But it could be, it almost makes sense.
Avatar 11:36pm Little Danny:

more and more Chico Hamilton on deck
Avatar 11:52pm Dano59:

now this I like...Roze!
Avatar 11:56pm coelacanth:

Thanks Danny!
'night all.
Avatar 11:57pm Little Danny:

Rage on Cool Blue Flamers: see you in two weeks!
Avatar 11:58pm Little Danny:

Thanks 'coel! Same to you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am Doug Schulkind:

Sasha Jones and Paid By the Tear ( wfmu.org... ) will be filling in for Cool Blue Danny next week.
Avatar 12:00am Little Danny:

"Everything is Fine." Perfect sentiment.
  12:34pm Marie:

Great show :>)
  12:46pm Marie:

It's like your shows or some parts of them are like "mindscapes"....
