Irwin's got good stuff in the hopper.

Irwin:

Please help the Hoboken Jack fund. Click link below the doc's prescription. Jack is a longtime listener, volunteer, contributor, comments board participant, and all-around incredibly nice guy. Help him in his family's hour of need.

Uhhmm, it was well know that Winston Churchill used prescribed alcohol when he visited the US during prohibition. Seeing as Prohibition didn't end until Dec 5, 1933, this probably is the real script.

Hi Irwin!

Hello, BB, official WFMU staffer.

Of course, I got my combination Ugg/Tevas in the mail yesterday!

Another great Jaki Byard track. Lotta Art Tatum in this one.

Thanks for introducing me to Magic Potion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm

Word, Todd. I first heard Magic Potion via Irwin a couple of months ago and promptly sought out tracks off Bandcamp.

Someone ought to brew these guys some coffee.
Avatar 🎸 4:16pm

@NGH: Yes, I read that that was how Walgreen's got its start — prescribing booze.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm

Love the Magic Potion lead singer. Strange mix of angel hair pasta and helium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm
Passaic River Blues:

Love these ads.
Avatar 🎸 4:21pm

Oddly, he reminds me of Bill Clinton.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm
Irwin:

Who, the lead singer of Magic Potion or Tom Wilson?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm
Parq:

I dunno who βrian means, either, but "angel hair pasta and helium" sounds like something they would have served on a huge plate at one of those power restaurants in the 80s.
Avatar 🎸 4:35pm

Tom Wilson.

work it! Thank you Irwin, this is great.

It's not a tape, Mike. Slabs of vinyl. Usefully digitized by Irwin. With many more to come.

Re: Hoboken Jack, what is the significance of Scholastic, which is mentioned in the "Story" posted by his friend?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm
Passaic River Blues:

Well, someone should revive Lou AND his idea. THEY'D MAKE MILLIONS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm

Jack worked at Scholastic for many years. Wherever he goes, he makes friends. NO ONE does not like Jack, and most who meet and know him LOVE him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
Irwin:

Most of the MF eps I'll be airing are from vinyl, but a friend at UMG provided me with tape transfers of some shows I couldn't track down. This one's from vinyl. Lots of restoration was required. Had to swap out audio on a couple of music tracks.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:46pm

Awesome time to have headphones on.

As in the educational magazine and book publisher?

I'm fine with that (swapping good audio in for bad where you can do it).

"Mirror" is still one of the greatest love songs ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm

rrg: AA can, but it requires some tricks discovered by trial and error. The de-ess feature is useless for this sort of sibilance.
  4:59pm
fred:

who is singing? Keola Bemer?
  4:59pm
Dean:

"The de-ess feature is useless for this sort of sibilance." Maybe not the best sentence to utter under the circumstances.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm

Makes sense. Williams passed away quite a while back. Similar styles...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm
Irwin:

This Geri Allen album is from 1998.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
Guido from Cologne:

time and again I'm surprised by "s"-sibliances i get from old (but seemingly near mint) vinyls. Which make me puzzle if it is caused by being played once withan damaged stylus, microphone problems during recording, mixing devices or mastering mistakes. I tend to guess for the latter.
  5:26pm
Laura L:

Walked in from meeting out of office with a client, turned on radio, and you were playing The Clientele. That's almost spooky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm

It's serendipitous.

This is lovely.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm

Hey, those jazz/fusion guys make bank as session players on pop recordings. Narada Michael Walden, Mahavishnu's second drummer, played on and produced songs by (I think) Mariah Carey, IIRC. Not that I'm equating her to James Taylor mind you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm

Piano: Herbie Hancock

I always thought that Tommy Bolin had great potential as a player, but I think his solo stuff was kinda mediocre.
