Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Ken From Hyde Park:

A prescription for booze ... is this the same doctor Trump uses?
Avatar 3:07pm V Priceless:

what's up...hic...doc?
  3:08pm Listening Out There:

Hard to tell whether the Rx is for the patient or the caretakers...
Avatar 3:10pm geezerette:

Avatar 3:12pm V Priceless:

I initially misread 'indefinite' as 'infinite' : )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Passaic River Blues:

Irwin's got good stuff in the hopper.
Avatar 3:26pm Irwin:

Please help the Hoboken Jack fund. Click link below the doc's prescription. Jack is a longtime listener, volunteer, contributor, comments board participant, and all-around incredibly nice guy. Help him in his family's hour of need.
Avatar 3:30pm northguineahills:

Uhhmm, it was well know that Winston Churchill used prescribed alcohol when he visited the US during prohibition. Seeing as Prohibition didn't end until Dec 5, 1933, this probably is the real script.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi Irwin!
Avatar 3:43pm Irwin:

Hello, BB, official WFMU staffer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Bronwyn Bishop:

That's me :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm rrg:

Official? Well, now!
Avatar 3:45pm Irwin:

Did you get your official uniform and badge?
  3:54pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Of course, I got my combination Ugg/Tevas in the mail yesterday!
Avatar 3:56pm Irwin:

You're so en vogue!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Parq:

Another great Jaki Byard track. Lotta Art Tatum in this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Webhamster Henry:

These Music Factories are so much fun!
Avatar 4:06pm Roberto:

Gosh dang, Tom was one cool cat!
Avatar 4:08pm Todd-o-phonic:

Thanks for introducing me to Magic Potion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Passaic River Blues:

Word, Todd. I first heard Magic Potion via Irwin a couple of months ago and promptly sought out tracks off Bandcamp.
Avatar 4:14pm βrian:

Someone ought to brew these guys some coffee.
Avatar 4:16pm βrian:

@NGH: Yes, I read that that was how Walgreen's got its start — prescribing booze.
Avatar 4:17pm Irwin:

Love the Magic Potion lead singer. Strange mix of angel hair pasta and helium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Passaic River Blues:

Love these ads.
Avatar 4:21pm βrian:

Oddly, he reminds me of Bill Clinton.
Avatar 4:33pm Irwin:

Who, the lead singer of Magic Potion or Tom Wilson?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Parq:

I dunno who βrian means, either, but "angel hair pasta and helium" sounds like something they would have served on a huge plate at one of those power restaurants in the 80s.
Avatar 4:35pm βrian:

Tom Wilson.
Avatar 4:36pm Erella:

This is fantastic! Thank you Irwin.
  4:39pm Mike Sin:

I find this archive tape completely fascinating. Thanks for this, Irwin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Stevel:

Cogitate, baby!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Passaic River Blues:

Lou Reed should revive this made-to-order endless playlist idea.
  4:41pm eiiii:

work it! Thank you Irwin, this is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm rrg:

It's not a tape, Mike. Slabs of vinyl. Usefully digitized by Irwin. With many more to come.

Yes, these are indeed great.
Avatar 4:42pm Erella:

Passaic River Blues: Except that he's dead.
  4:42pm Dean:

Re: Hoboken Jack, what is the significance of Scholastic, which is mentioned in the "Story" posted by his friend?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Passaic River Blues:

Well, someone should revive Lou AND his idea. THEY'D MAKE MILLIONS.
Avatar 4:44pm Irwin:

Jack worked at Scholastic for many years. Wherever he goes, he makes friends. NO ONE does not like Jack, and most who meet and know him LOVE him.
Avatar 4:46pm Irwin:

Most of the MF eps I'll be airing are from vinyl, but a friend at UMG provided me with tape transfers of some shows I couldn't track down. This one's from vinyl. Lots of restoration was required. Had to swap out audio on a couple of music tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Stevel:

Awesome time to have headphones on.
  4:46pm Dean:

As in the educational magazine and book publisher?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm rrg:

I'm fine with that (swapping good audio in for bad where you can do it).
Avatar 4:47pm Irwin:

Cale's final interview seg (coming up) had terrible sibilance, which had to be suppressed manually, word by word.
Avatar 4:48pm Irwin:

Dean - yes.
Avatar 4:50pm volunteer extraordinaire:

i love the bit about nico, i'm listening from abroad right now and this is giving me a lot of love and warmth for home <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm rrg:

Adobe Audition can do that?
  4:50pm Dean:

I'm in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Guido from Cologne:

respect for all the detail work.
got a certain idea what it means.
Avatar 4:51pm βrian:

Now, that's basso profundo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Parq:

"Mirror" is still one of the greatest love songs ever.
Avatar 4:58pm Irwin:

rrg: AA can, but it requires some tricks discovered by trial and error. The de-ess feature is useless for this sort of sibilance.
  4:59pm fred:

who is singing? Keola Bemer?
  4:59pm Dean:

"The de-ess feature is useless for this sort of sibilance." Maybe not the best sentence to utter under the circumstances.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Stevel:

De-ess this: Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
  5:01pm gedevo:

that tom wilson show was sick!
Avatar 5:02pm βrian:

"Spend this Christmas on the Isthmus."
Avatar 5:03pm βrian:

Damn interesting, Irwin. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Kat in Chicago:

Oh, so I'm not the only one de-ess doesn't work for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Kat in Chicago:

Looking forward to Trish Keenan feature!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Webhamster Henry:

Kreskin is no Criswell!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm rrg:

I'm not a fan of that gentleman.
Avatar 5:07pm Irwin:

Kat in CHI: de-ess works best on live recordings, not archival audio, esp. from vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm mariano:

Hey Irwin, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Stevel:

Great work, Irwin. Much appreciated!
  5:12pm Listening Out There:

Sounds like you got to something with Tony Williams...?
Avatar 5:13pm Irwin:

LOT: Close! It's Lenny White.
  5:14pm Listening Out There:

Makes sense. Williams passed away quite a while back. Similar styles...
Avatar 5:15pm Irwin:

This Geri Allen album is from 1998.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Guido from Cologne:

time and again I'm surprised by "s"-sibliances i get from old (but seemingly near mint) vinyls. Which make me puzzle if it is caused by being played once withan damaged stylus, microphone problems during recording, mixing devices or mastering mistakes. I tend to guess for the latter.
  5:26pm Laura L:

Walked in from meeting out of office with a client, turned on radio, and you were playing The Clientele. That's almost spooky.
Avatar 5:28pm Irwin:

It's serendipitous.
  5:32pm Jack:

This is lovely.
  5:33pm Laura L:

By the way, happened to notice on additions to Oxford for 2016: "clientelist" (http://public.oed.com/the-oed-today/recent-updates-to-the-oed/september-2016-update/new-words-list-september-2016/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm mariano:

It's not a Tuma!
  5:34pm Listening Out There:

You Can Tuma Piano, But You Can't Tuma Fish...
  5:36pm Brendan:

Gotta roll -thanks Mr Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm mariano:

Yeah well I can dance Tuma own beat...
  5:39pm Listening Out There:

More vintage drumming...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm mariano:

Oh wow, it's really heartening to see how good the response has been on GoFundMe for Hoboken Jack -- restores a bit of faith in humanity!
  5:41pm Jack:

Tommy Bolin guitar? if I remembers...
Avatar 5:42pm Irwin:

Didn't know that. Correct!
Avatar 5:43pm Irwin:

Album: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm mariano:

I was wondering if McLaughlin was making a cameo, but Bolin it is...
  5:43pm Listening Out There:

...Jan Hammer keyboards, me thinks...
Avatar 5:43pm Irwin:

Loved this album when first released, but was already a big Mahavishnu fan.
  5:44pm Old:

Didn't Massive Attack rip this off?
  5:44pm Cglenn:

This puts me lying in my bed in Tulsa OK
Cranking it in my headphones.. In the 70's.
Diggin' it.. Not high or nothin' ...
Super Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Carmichael:

Leland Sklar on bass? The same guy who played on the early James Taylor albums?
Avatar 5:48pm volunteer extraordinaire:

love the clientele!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm mariano:

Hey, those jazz/fusion guys make bank as session players on pop recordings. Narada Michael Walden, Mahavishnu's second drummer, played on and produced songs by (I think) Mariah Carey, IIRC. Not that I'm equating her to James Taylor mind you!
Avatar 5:53pm Irwin:

Piano: Herbie Hancock
  5:54pm Jack:

I always thought that Tommy Bolin had great potential as a player, but I think his solo stuff was kinda mediocre.
Avatar 5:57pm Irwin:

Thanks to any of you who contributed to Jack's medical fund.
Avatar 5:58pm Irwin:

Oops! Different Jack, not the one commenting on today's playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm mariano:

Thanks Irwin, bye everyone!
  5:59pm Jack:

Yes, not me, but thanks everybody for contributing, and thank you Irwin, as always.
  6:07pm zbzbzzz:

hey Irwin, i was wondering what the name of the diddy you played in between madhouse and your outroduction! i love it! thanks again for a wonderful show!
