This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Bebop lives!
Hi all!
Avatar 7:04pm geezerette:

Hello Evan & explorers!
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

Doc Jazz! Geezerette! Hellllllllo dear friends
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

this track so wild. the word is that Dizzy had never even really seen a synthesizer until this session.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm doctorjazz:

This is wild, Diz and Latin Percussion was always a heady mix! (late in Diz's career).
Avatar 7:09pm geezerette:

Saw "Dizzy",(John Birks Gillespie),live at Catalina's once. Still can't believe how lucky that was. Shows like that are religious experiences.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm doctorjazz:

Couldn't hear a synthesizer so far, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm doctorjazz:

Lucky enough to have caught him many times in NY Jazz clubs, often with Jon Faddis, his "sidekick" at the time.
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

it's in there, just adding fluorishes. Same guy who handled the synths on Yusef's the Doctor is in... LP
Avatar 7:11pm geezerette:

docjazz,how wonderful. :)
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

wow that must have been just THE thing to see in this whole world
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

such a weird arrangement!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm doctorjazz:

Ah, there it is...
Avatar 7:15pm geezerette:

Love the energy and positivity. Pure sunshine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Carmichael:

Heya Flash and jazz lovers.
Avatar 7:19pm Little Danny:

Have to duck out for a work-related function but wanted to say: Hi everybody! Also, brilliant, deep show thusfar, Flash
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm melinda:

hi & bye Danny!
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

Hey there Carmichael!
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

aloha and adios, LD and thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm doctorjazz:

Those Dizzy shows were fabulous, used to drag non jazz friends to see him, always transcendent music and lots of smiles in that Dizzy kind of way. Haven't thought about it for a while, but making me nostalgic...
Avatar 7:24pm Little Danny:

I've read that Olatunji had a profound effect on Mo Tucker of the Velvet Underground
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm doctorjazz:

Velvets and Olatunji? Wow, that's a stretch, can't think of styles more diverse (now, Coltrane and the Velvets...)
Avatar 7:31pm northguineahills:

I've had that Olatunji LP forever and never knew the story behind Akiwowo, thanks!
Avatar 7:34pm Little Danny:

@doctorjazz: www.furious.com...
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

I've heard that too, LD. I remember that Iggy Pop was also really influenced by a George Abdo belly dancing record. People just trying to leave the normative western styles are drawn outward, even if they use it in a hard-to-identify way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Danny, I didn't doubt you on whether she was influenced by Olatunji, just couldn't picture it from the Velvet's music. Liked the link, interesting read (hanging out at my office with some time to kill).
Avatar 7:40pm northguineahills:

Just noticed I also have that Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods LP.
Avatar 7:41pm Flash Strap:

it's a REAL good one, NGH. Probably my favorite Machito anything
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm doctorjazz:

Gotta run, been great, catch the rest later, thanks!
Avatar 7:45pm Flash Strap:

wonderful having you, doc!
Avatar 7:49pm Flash Strap:

now there's a track name. Picture that at the top of the sheet music
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

this really is my favorite period of Gainsbourg's career
Avatar 7:58pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Evan - catch the rest later!
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

thanks bob! see ya!

...should I be surprised that Wiki tells me so little about an Orisha?...:
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

hey Rev Rab! no, probably not. Wiki is so culture-tunnel-visioned
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 8:19pm northguineahills:

I will always associate Carmen:Toreador as 1992's Fox Kids theme song (I always watched Animaniacs after school before going off to my after-school activities (band, soccer, debate) in HS.
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

Hi there Ehd!
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

i hear that NGH

Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

Oh, welcome C! Welcome!
Avatar 8:30pm Flash Strap:

I love bongo music as a signifier for "bad news", RR. So delicious
Avatar 8:31pm geezerette:

crazy beatniks! get offa my lawn!
Avatar 8:33pm coelacanth:

Howdy coel!
Avatar 8:35pm geezerette:

this is so cymbalic!
Avatar 8:36pm Flash Strap:

G, you just predicted the next track!
Avatar 8:38pm geezerette:

Wow! spooky! :)
Must be those Orishas!
Avatar 8:38pm Flash Strap:

I wish I knew who was actually performing this, etc.
Avatar 8:39pm northguineahills:

Avatar 8:40pm northguineahills:

Gotta jump for a bit!
Avatar 8:41pm geezerette:

No one else plays Stockhausen. This would be such a good score for a cubist Tom and Jerry.
Avatar 8:43pm hyde:

bah, late again. my Thursday night style is really getting cramped lately.
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

I'd love to see that, geezerette. that is like one of my main dreams, in a way
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

welcome, friend.
Avatar 8:45pm hyde:

i loved that show last week when i finally caught the archive, btw, it was great to pack boxes to.
Avatar 8:45pm geezerette:

If I were an animator I'd totally do that.
Avatar 8:45pm coelacanth:

i was just wondering where hyde was.
hello hyde
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

so glad, H
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm melinda:

I'd like some bongos.
Avatar 8:47pm geezerette:

Light at tunnel's end Hyde!
Avatar 8:47pm hyde:

hey, coel. my impending house move is necessitating a post Thursday workday drive back to Mass on Thursday night, so i'm on the road until like 8:30. don't worry about me next week, it'll be the same!
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

not a suite of military music designed for tympani, melinda?
Avatar 8:47pm hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm melinda:

Military music for tympani is good, I was just thinking out loud that I'd like to have my own set to play.
Avatar 8:49pm Flash Strap:

oh, me too! me too please
Avatar 8:49pm hyde:

@melinda the neighbors'll love it ;)
Avatar 8:50pm geezerette:

Cabanas Cubanos!
Avatar 8:51pm hyde:

i have to say i'm pretty happy *not* to have a set of tympanis, these days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm melinda:

@hyde: one of my neighbors sometimes plays guitar on his front steps. It would be funny if I sat on my steps just out of view and tried to accompany him on bongos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm melinda:

Did you unload the tympanis at your moving sale?
Avatar 8:59pm coelacanth:

i'd like some bongos too. i sold mine for $35. when i left nj 15 years ago. my plan was to camp upstate 'till the winter then live in my car and head west. 'got rid of most of my stuff.
...i'm still here, with lots of stuff, but no bongos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm melinda:

I like the Habañera cha cha.
Avatar 9:19pm Flash Strap:

I've had this Wilen stuff for a while now but have only just started listening to it... so good!
Avatar 9:19pm hyde:

grrrr, bongos. i had a nice set, and i can't find 'em!
Avatar 9:23pm Flash Strap:

@melinda: I used to play sax in my room at my place in Boston... there was this weird dude who would come around with a trumpet and stand in the alleyway and play along. Both of us were, uh, "avant garde" and together it was just the sound of rusty squiggles. I never even saw him I don't think
Avatar 9:23pm Little Danny:

Ha! Bongos seem like they'd be hard to lose. (Of course I'm one to talk.)
Avatar 9:24pm Little Danny:

That is awesome, Evan. And Rusty Squiggles is a good name for a certain type of musician
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm melinda:

The beatnik angle makes them all the more appealing.
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

LD! You've returned! I guess you'd better have, come to think of it
Avatar 9:27pm geezerette:

Hey melinda!
This is gorgeous.
Avatar 9:27pm hyde:

@LD that's the thing! those stupid bongos have to be here somewhere...
Avatar 9:28pm Little Danny:

Sumptuous playlist in my absence, Flash. Glad to be back
Avatar 9:30pm geezerette:

Ha, my dad had bongos! No idea where they went either.
Avatar 9:31pm geezerette:

Castanets too.
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

they buried themselves in the mix a lot, but there's a lot of psych/library style stuff getting added to this. it's not at all the ethnographic thing it sort of seems to be. Might have like Marc Chantereau and guys like that on it, but I'm not sure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm melinda:

There was a set of bongos at my grandmother's house that I wish I had now. They must have belonged to my older cousins who lived with her for a while (there were other odd things around the house, like troll dolls, which must have come from the same era).
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

really cool cover: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:39pm geezerette:

Avatar 9:42pm hyde:

Avatar 9:43pm Flash Strap:

i love how it rises and falls in this really weird way
Avatar 9:46pm geezerette:

Hypnotic like so much of what you play.
Avatar 9:47pm Little Danny:

Wow, "Beautiful Ohio." This is wonderful
Avatar 9:47pm Flash Strap:

I think this is one of the very first Waldorf orchestras, led by Joseph Knecht
Avatar 9:47pm geezerette:

Suddenly we're waltzing.
Avatar 9:49pm geezerette:

Something weirdly romantic about it.
Avatar 9:51pm hyde:

gah, the show feels so short when you miss the first ninety minutes, thanks!
Avatar 9:54pm Little Danny:

All, please waltz over to the next room and join me! wfmu.org...
Avatar 9:54pm geezerette:

That went fast! Wonderful show Evan. :D

Good Night everyone!
Avatar 9:57pm Flash Strap:

Thanks to all ears who heard! See you next week my dear exploratory committee
Avatar 9:59pm Little Danny:

Thank YOU Evan!
Avatar 9:59pm coelacanth:

Thanks Evan.
'twas most excellent.
