In the '90s I read Fanfare magazine both for my job and for personal pleasure. It's a bimonthly classical music recording review magazine, from which I maintained a personal want-list in a notebook of v-e-r-y t-i-n-y graph paper. Probably approached ~1000 items, some of which would get crossed off, but mostly, no. Finally gave it up, because the logistics of seeking and finding became unsupportable, never mind actually affording the records. I have toyed with subscribing to Fanfare in recent months, perhaps to start the whole business over again. But now, come to think of it, I'll just use your Bandcamp list as my own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am
coelacanth:

i've looked at your collection before! we have at least one mutual purchase. (though i don't remember what) i also share some items with Flashstrap, Gary Sullivan, Kurt Gottchalk, Clay Pidgeon... i'm sure others that are not recognizable. i'll have to peruse your wishlist one day when i have several days!
  10:43am
Dean:

Although I do have on an immediate want-list as of yesterday the new Acid Arab record.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am

"Sometimes wanting something is more important than getting it." <<---- I like this a lot, @Brian.
  10:49am
Dean:

Fanfare reviewers were true authorities. One could rely on their enthusiasms to guide one's own. But still, acquiring a classical collection is complicated by reiteration. How many performances of Ockhegem's Missa Caput does one need? Turns out the answer could be, "A lot."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
Jeff Golick:

Yeah, what is going on now, @Brian? I haven't had time to properly take it in, but has the vote been overturned legislatively or something? Or being fought on prodcedural grounds?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am

in the 80s, when i had become disgusted with punk, pop, rock, etc. and was consuming masses of "world music" and reggae, the shanachie records catalogue was generally pretty honest and informative. every few months i'd take a drive to their warehouse in bonnton nj to pick up several dozen albums directly.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am
Jeff Golick:

re "Make American Great Again" etc.: one of the slippier parts of all this is the coded language - "great" for who, exactly, and in what way? It's assumed.

The underlying distrust of "facts"; "truth"; or even a common narrative is really horrifying to behold. It's the triumph of some kind of post-modernist thought, I guess, taken to its most disturbing and extreme end-point.

I thought this was a good take on it: theawl.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am

@RRN63: yes, re Paris 69 resonances

Didn't get to jazz until the mid 70's, Trane was already gone, and I had taken a "Jazz Appreciation"course in college, so Bird, and Satch were as much signposts as Trane. I actually wondered a bit why everyone was sounding like Trane at that point, went for the World Sax Quartet and Lester Bowie/Art Ensemble. Took a while for Trane's influence to meld with others, as it had with Bird.
