hi Joe & listeners!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am redkayak:

Happy Mega Moon Monday!
Avatar 9:06am Sem Chumbo:

Good morning, Joe, and hello to you & Clan McGasko.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Ken From Hyde Park:

Boing boing, y'all!
  9:14am Listener Robert:

Anybody else think it unfair that Muuro got a year + a half as mascot, but Dusty only a little over a year? I guess when they had the original contest, they weren't thinking about making it a recurring thing.

I liked WF-MU-QK! (the duck) best, both for the clever photo idea and her being a duck (as in Hour Of...).
Avatar 9:14am Joe McG:

Good morning, friends. We're beginning soft and soothing today with a lovely set by Julianna Barwick recorded here about a month ago. It's about an hour.
  9:15am Salat:

Morning Joe... Just saw "Gimme Danger" yesterday any chance a Stooges... ya know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am doctorjazz:

Nice, soft opening, hi all!
Avatar 9:16am Joe McG:

@Salat: I'm sure I'll want to hear some Stooges after I see it, too! Not sure if it's on the menu, but let's see where things take us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am pantz:

Good morning, Joe. This is beeyutiful.
Avatar 9:21am Joe McG:

Sorry about no song titles, by the way, I never picked up a set list. I recognize some of 'em (we just heard "Nebula," and "St. Apolonia" is around the corner), but not all. Super-duper Barwick groupies, please chime in and I'll post it later.
Avatar 9:21am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe and friends. Is it true the target is finally over the hill and past the post?
  9:25am JakeGould:

Hey Joe!
Avatar 9:27am Joe McG:

What's up, Jake! Hi also to Brian UK, pantz, dr. jazz, Robert, Ken, Sem, melinda, and redkayak and anyone else who doesn't have it quite together yet to say hello on computers.

And you, too, annie! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am annie:

joe, i have to say that it feels so damn good to see that monthly donation silently and efficiently slip out of my debit card to WFMU!
Avatar 9:36am Joe McG:

@annie: Aw, annie, that's such a nice thing to say. Of course, we appreciate everyone who lets money slip our way. BIG THANKS to all who contributed to our fall fundraiser. It took awhile, but we made it thanks to you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am pantz:

Perfect Monday malaise music, Joe. Like a Calgon bath. ;)
Avatar 9:44am KP:

Happy Monday, Joe
Avatar 9:44am Joe McG:

@pantz: Ha! I like that. Many of us are feeling a bit bruised, so it's nice to be immersed in Julianna's warm and soothing sound bath. Hey, KP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Live! - Wow.
Avatar 9:49am Joe McG:

@RR63: Julianna creates loops of her voice and continues to sing over them. It's like liquid architecture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Guido from Cologne:

Hello Joe!
Perfect music for work.
Avatar 9:50am Joe McG:

Hey Guido! Oh, web site, btw: juliannabarwick.com
Avatar 9:51am Joe McG:

If you live in the NYC area, she will also be playing at Union Pool this coming Saturday. A wonderful live experience.
Avatar 9:51am βrian:

Except you can actually dance about this architecture. Slowly, of course.
Avatar 9:53am Joe McG:

@Brian: Expressively. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Ken From Hyde Park:

Why do I suspect this hour-long live session is leading off the show so that Joe can attend to a big pile of emails?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& we can Write about it! Trifecta!...
Avatar 9:54am βrian:

I missed Julianna *twice* here on the isthmus. Had to thrash myself with spruce boughs ...
Avatar 9:54am Joe McG:

@Ken: So cynical, my friend! Liz Berg DID help me find a copy of "Leon Live," however.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am listener james from westwood:

Not gonna lie, this is an absolute joy this morning. Couldn't make it to the show so glad Matt and Ruth did such a great job capturing this ethereal wonder.
  10:00am amylea:

This WAS a wonderful night. Mary Lattimore was no slouch, either. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am listener james from westwood:

Interesting you think of the sea. I always think of the inside of huge cathedrals.
  10:04am brycepunk:

Love the show this morning. Perfect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Webhamster Henry:

She is good live, I saw her at my local venue about 2 years ago!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Ike:

You said it, brother. I think of nothing but mushroom clouds now, every second of every minute of every day.
  10:04am βrian:

Your living room? Awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am JP from KC:

'Morning, all. Can you believe we lost Leonard and Leon within a couple days of each other? When will 2016 end its murderous reign of terror?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Ike:

(That comment was re: "Future generations, should there be any.")
Avatar 10:07am Joe McG:

@Ike: I hear you, man.

Good morning, @Joe and everybody! Thanks for playing "Yes We Can Can", all praise to Allen Toussaint for penning such a brilliant song.
Avatar 10:13am Joe McG:

@PKNY: Good morning! A wonderful song and a wonderful version. Allen Toussaint, what a genius.

Avatar 10:31am Joe McG:

Sinner! @annie: I won't stay here, but just needed a few songs of inspiration.
Avatar 10:31am Sem Chumbo:

Well, this is awfully swell, Joe.
  10:32am Rebecca:

Seriously, what they said^
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am doctorjazz:

Man, that Flack/Hathaway is incredible!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Mick:

I'm pretty sure "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught" was from Sound of Music, not South Pacific
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Mick:

Nope! I take it back!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So many people are suffering - even physically ill - frightened & demoralized.
It's crucial to realize that - this was not a Majority - & is not - not even in the vote!
- & we are not alone.
Culture & Music are playing a huge role here - as they always do.
Avatar 10:38am PKNY:

Not going to say this version is on par than the Impressions version as far as vocals, but any excuse to hear Curtis' words is fine with me.
Avatar 10:38am Joe McG:

That's OK, Mick, there are so many great musicals!
Avatar 10:40am Mayuko:

Good morning, Magasuko san.
Avatar 10:42am Joe McG:

Mark R played a whole sequence this morning
Avatar 10:51am Joe McG:

Thanks, jamesie! @Greg: Amazing, right? @Guido: He did? Wow, I didn't even know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am ChrisB.:

Billy squeezing four syllables out of "probably" is pretty inventive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am listener james from westwood:

@Mick: Perfectly understandable; they're both excellent shows with dark undercurrents!
Avatar 10:54am Joe McG:

@ChrisB: For ages, "probably" was the hardest word for me to say on the radio. I may have conquered it, I'm not sure. We'll see when I backannounce!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am ChrisB.:

@Joe: try the popular truncated version, "prob'ly."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Jeff Golick:

Has a new mascot been selected and introduced to the public?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Jeff Golick:

@Joe: mine's "regularly"
Avatar 10:57am Joe McG:

@Jeff G: Oof, I don't know if I even want to try that one....Mascot I don't think has been selected yet!
Avatar 10:58am βrian:

@Joe: Have you tried "prolly"?
Avatar 11:00am Joe McG:

@Brian: That's where I usually end up when I try not to stumble on the "b"s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Guido from Cologne:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Guido from Cologne:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Webhamster Henry:

I have a terrible time typing probably - it always comes out probab;y .. and because? it comes out becasue. I should probab;y type prolly and 'cuz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Guido from Cologne:

a wing walk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Parq:

While singing some jingles in the studio in early 1977, she caught the attention of former Bloodrock vocalist Jim Rutledge who introduced her to music producer Boomer Castleman. Wilson began recording for his BNA Records label and recorded a song, "Telephone Man", the story of a woman and her amorous adventures with her telephone technician, filled with suggestive lyrics and her breathy squealing voice. The song became a surprise hit single, climbing the UK Singles Chart to #6, spending ten weeks in the listings, as well as making it to #18 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. It became a gold record, selling over one million copies in the U.S. alone.

I, for one, don't need to know any more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Guido from Cologne:

Flügelhorn is a horn with wings
  11:06am sinner:

...I thought it was High German for "Free Bird??"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Uncle Michael:

I didn't know Boomer Castleman was involved with that record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Goyim in the AM:

I bet Flügel Walk is a pun, but I tuned in late and missed the record -- was the piano a featured instrument?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am annie:

have any hank wilson?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Uncle Michael:

Owen "Boomer" Castleman was half of Boomer and Travis. Travis was Michael Murphey...of "Wildfire" and cowboy nonsense. They were also the braintrust behind the band The Lewis & Clark Expedition. They also did "Fowl Owl on the Prowl" for the film "In the Heat of the Night." It was a replacement song for Sam the Sham's "Little Red Riding Hood" which was used for the diner scene...when the rights couldn't be cleared.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Webhamster Henry:

WFMU DJ alum Nicholas Hill played a nice Leon Russell set on his WVBR show in Ithaca.
Avatar 11:13am Joe McG:

@annie: We will hear some Hank Wilson, yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Guido from Cologne:

Russel had a nice anekdote about his time as a studio musician.

Some producer did not undersatand that Russel did not read notes and hired him to a session with complicated scores, that somehow aped Russels improvising style. he did not understand that one can play sophisticated stuff but cannot read.

Who believes flowers grow on lampposts? Hippies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Webhamster Henry:

I usually hear the Free Design version. Lotta traffic on that 59th St. bridge!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Uncle Michael:

I guess Ted Templeman refuses to talk about Harper's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Son - as you grow older - you'll realize that flowers don't grow on lampposts...& no one lends money to a man w/ a sense of humor...
  11:19am melinda:

I love Harper's Bizarre
Avatar 11:22am Joe McG:

All these lovely arrangements are Leon Russell's hand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Candidly, I'm basically ignorant about Leon Russell - Thx JoeMcG!
  11:25am Brendan:

Feelin Groovy's 'Dappled and drowsy and ready for sleep' sounds poetic but dappled apparently means covered in spots
Avatar 11:26am Joe McG:

@RR63: You bet! @Brendan: Maybe spots of sunshine? :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am ChrisB.:

What a fascinating chronicle of obscure gems!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Parq:

Brendan, I always pictured the protagonist lying on the grass in one of those small parks near the bridge, with dappled sunlight shining through the trees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Jeff Golick:

Russell's work on those live Cocker recordings are what I think of first and foremost -- this is a lovely tour of other byways.
Avatar 11:30am Joe McG:

This one's not so obscure, but you don't hear this (sort of original) version much because the other versions are so great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Uncle Michael:

Leon wrote this with Delaney and Bonnie. Bonnie was the first to record it. Karen Carpenter didn't sing "sleep with you again". Original title: "Groupie"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 11:32am Paul D:

Congrats on meeting the station fundraiser goal yesterday!
Avatar 11:36am Joe McG:

@UM: Thanks! Yes, Delaney and Bonnie were there first. @Paul: Thanks, and thanks again to everyone who got us there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am doctorjazz:

Always loved this Home Sweet Oklahoma, from a great album I bought back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Parq:

Didn't know Leon cut "Hollis Brown". The Neville Brothers' version is one of the most disturbing things I've ever heard.
Avatar 11:40am Joe McG:

@Parq: This crazed Moog version is something else!
  11:41am melinda:

Thanks for the Leon Russell tribute, I didn't know much about him other than the bits that were in the Wrecking Crew documentary.
Avatar 11:42am Joe McG:

Hank Wilson was Leon's pure country alter-ego.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Goyim in the AM:

Man, I don't know what it is about Hathaway -- he sings the hell out of this and owns every word, and he still makes it sound so desperately, hopelessly sad. I love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am ChrisB.:

I bought Hank Wilson's Back Vol.1 because of the Leon Russell connection, but it taught me quite a bit about classic country music back in '73.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Carmichael:

Heya Joe and listeners.
Avatar 11:49am Joe McG:

You can see great footage of him recording the first Hank Wilson LP in the fab Les Blank doc "A Poem Is a Naked Person."
Avatar 11:49am KP:

Nice going, Joe.
  11:50am Dean:

Russell featured Larry Hosford's first two records on his Shelter label, and I think he played on the second one, "Cross Words." I know for sure that George Harrison played on it. Gems, those two records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Carmichael:

Joe, my Swag for Life radio is missing! I know I'm still paying, cuz I just checked my account to look for it. Do I need to do something?
Avatar 11:51am Joe McG:

@Dean: Wish I could find them!
Avatar 11:52am Sem Chumbo:

Mr. McGasko, sir, is has been a pleasure from start to finish today once again.
For godsakes, would a little bit of terrible radio from you from time to time kill you? :-D
Thnx, JM, and see you and the Clan next time.
