I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Good Saturday, Mayuko and all!
Avatar 12:02pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, james! Thank you for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm listener james from westwood:

No holiday shopping for me. Malls horrify me this time of year. Happier to proofread and listen to music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm listener james from westwood:

Malls actually horrify me on non-holiday occasions, too. I like busy casinos but hate malls. I am an odd duck.
Avatar 12:10pm Mayuko:

yeah, I'm so bad at shopping anyway, get tired and bored very quickly, almost never go to physical stores anymore. let alone there's a looooong line!
Avatar 12:12pm Mayuko:

Probably only book stores and craft supply stores. Home Depot etc. not even a record store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm listener james from westwood:

Yes, if I could teleport from one bookstore to the next all day, that would be perfect. Punctuated by visits to doughnut spots or coffeehouses. (In other words, Portland, OR!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Greetings, residents of Planet Vertigo. I stayed home yesterday and bought one thing online, a Nest thermostat. Saved $20 additional with a rebate from Central Hudson utility. When it comes, I can keep the temperature really low and turn it back up from my phone as I'm on the way home, which could be late evening or whenever.
Avatar 12:22pm Mayuko:

Hello, Ken! What does Nest thermostat do??? It controls the temperature of your house?
  12:29pm Doug Schulkind:

That Richard Kirk piece was fantastic!
Avatar 12:33pm Mayuko:

Doug! So happy to have you here!! I thought that piece was beautiful, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Yes, it's the smart thermostat of the future, giving hope to the robots that turn the furnace on & off. www.nest.com...

Jesse!!! Glad to have you here!!!

Hi Mayuko! Happy After-Thanksgiving Weekend.

Avatar 1:11pm Mayuko:

Happy weekend to you too, P-90, thank you for tuning in!
Avatar 1:11pm Mayuko:

Jesse, that's the one!!! Thank you! Here are the cat paintings I wanted to explain! blogs.scientificamerican.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Afraid to admit I'm not too familiar with Leonard Cohen's works. Are they all as powerful as that selection?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm melinda:

hi all
Avatar 1:47pm Mayuko:

@Ken Me neither, heard and liked a couple of albums of his, but I never had a phase of being really into him, probably because I didn't understand the poetry aspect of his music. I felt like the words were important part that made it powerful but I didn't get it. Many DJs did tributes though (as you might have already heard) available from the top page of wfmu.org.
Avatar 1:47pm Mayuko:

hi melinda, thank you for tuning in!

Avatar 2:16pm Mayuko:

Welcome on board, SeanG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm SeanG:

i'm off to the library to check out some Osamu Tezuka. Thank you Mayuko!
Avatar 2:20pm Mayuko:

@SeanG Hope you'll like it, he's great. Have a good rest of the weekend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm melinda:

Ekolali is nice music for a grey afternoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Heh, I was going to say that I'm planning to walk into town to drop off some books & DVDs at the library here when the show's over. Before the sun ducks for cover.
Avatar 2:26pm Mayuko:

@melinda he's from Sweden, perhaps they have lots of grey afternoon there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm SeanG:

hear you in two weeks!
Avatar 2:28pm Mayuko:

@Ken I still get surprised every evening by how the sun goes down much earlier now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Mayuko - Yes, we're probably spoiled by having DST for 2/3 of the year.
Avatar 2:33pm Mayuko:

I love DST. I wish Japan had that too.
Avatar 2:49pm Mayuko:

My last track today - tune in for Bill Mac for the next two Saturdays: wfmu.org...
Looking forward to being back on the radio, hope to see you all again on Dec 17th.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I hope that means this African tune goes and goes. It's a very nice track. Have a fun and successful time off, Mayuko. Thanks for the show today!
  2:54pm rw:

Thank you Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm listener james from westwood:

Enjoy your time away from the mic, and thanks for the fine show today!
  3:01pm P-90:

Thank you Mayuko!
Avatar 3:02pm Mayuko:

Thanks again all for listening! See you in December!

Hi Mayu, While I'm back in JPN again took advantage ordering all JPN CDs I wanted: 藤圭子ヒット&カバーコレクション 艶歌と縁歌; 淡谷のり子 全曲集; ゴールデン☆ベスト 青江三奈; 弘田三枝子・しんぐるこれくしょん; ファミコン 20TH アニバーサリー オリジナルサウンドトラックス VOL.1 ~ 3!!!
Avatar 1:46pm fred:

What a great first set! I love the arc of it, from a gloom that matches the pictures to the cosmic cars that could be headed to Liz Berg's robot dance party
Avatar 3:08pm fred:

I liked this Francisco Meirino track enough to clicky-star it. Speaking of unlistenable noise, check out the listener comment at the bottom of Thomas Storck's playlist page (it makes more sense knowing that his show was called "Dangerous for the brain" at the time): wfmu.org...
Avatar 3:25pm fred:

Not sure it's related, but "Russian Ballet Dance Company" could refer to "Ballets Russes", an early 20th century dance company based in Paris that was quite controversial at the time. They premiered Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring to a reception that went close to a riot. Nijinsky was part of it, and Diaghilev's choice of costume and set designers is ludicrous, including Picasso, Miro, Dali and many others. en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 12:27am Mayuko:

@zzmm man. I want Noriko Awaya best too :/ You're making me wanna travel there too. Haven't seen it for 6 years now!
Avatar 12:35am Mayuko:

@fred haha, I think my favorite is "Can you stop talking" since I don't remember a single time Thomas talking that long. I don't feel like I really understand what listeners' ideas of WFMU are but I guess it's ok. Ballets Russes sounds like the right interpretation of the band name, that does seem to be the kind of references they'd make in that scene in the 80's Japan. Thank you for that!
