Good afternoon Jason
Avatar 3:06pm Jason Elbogen:

Hey Fred, hope you're well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Ike:

Hello. I like Elmhurst. Any idea if Chao Thai is still good? I haven't been lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm melinda:

Avatar 3:14pm Jason Elbogen:

Hey Ike! Funny--did I mention Chao Thai a long long time ago?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Alex In Illinois:

Elmhurst Illinois? I have not been to Chao Thai, but I just looked it up and it is still there. The part of Elmhurst I have spent the most time in is the Hospital and the Toyota dealer. It is a very good hospital, though I have never stayed overnight.
Avatar 3:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Set off to a great start.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm ifny:

Holy snowbank, great way to get this party started. Drummer's in the House!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Ike:

Not sure, Jason. I just bring it up because you mentioned Elmhurst, and that used to be quite possibly the best Thai food in Queens. I've gone to Khao Kang recently, but not Chao. I was disappointed when Chao Too closed, but at least the original is still there, last I checked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm ifny:

Ok so I just looked up Pleng Nohra on YT to see if I could find it, but instead I found this which just blew my mind clean off. At first I thought he was making a traditional fishing hole, but no...can't wait to try this. To hell with fish anyway: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm fred:

Already two clicky-stars, this is looking like a fantastic show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Ike:

Thanks Jason. Yeah, I used to spend a lot of time on Chowhound too, and I might have seen you around there at one point or another. "Downhill alert" has crept into my personal jargon as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm melinda:

As far as jargon goes that sounds ok.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm fred:

I remember a Laotian student in college who had a long name too. The teachers were afraid to mangle her name so she got away with a lot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Jason and Drummer enthusiasts.
Avatar 3:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Now - what possible reason could Jewish people have for being concerned about racial scapegoating for economic &/or national frustrations? Germany was an especially 'civilized' country. We are in big trouble, & need to organize Resistance. Orwell was right I'm afraid: there is no being apolitical.
  3:37pm Leonardo:

Turn it up!
Avatar 3:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The military is not necessarily happy about the what is occurring. Much of the Navy confirms that Global Climate change is in progress. All or most recent veterans holding or running for office have been Democrats. The Veterans for Standing Rock, they were against the pipeline, right?

Lots of love to you folks down there from the up side of the border. We're thinking about you. If Cascadia goes ahead, there will always be a place for a NY/NJ satellite :)
Avatar 4:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx ifny.
Some actually placed hope in Drumpf of breaking the Duhbya-Obama cycle of Regime Change foreign policy. Every indication is he'll go for Oligarchy & Nationalism - & his cabinet picks are all crazy RightWing. It's difficult of course to gauge how much his statements are mere Impulse - &/or Unreality TV Media Manipulation - but every indication there is we can't expect a terribly great amount of international humanitarianism in his Military policy...How much cooperation he gets from the Pentagon is another x factor...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm melinda:

@ifny: EFF is good.
@Alex: yeah, the miltary knows climate change is happening and poses serious security threats. I wish more deniers knew that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm melinda:

Trump's national security advisor sounds totally whacked. All his picks have been dreadful, it's hard to keep track but I hear that one is just nuts.

The Doukhabors are the most badass Christians I know: en.wikipedia.org... or www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca...
Avatar 5:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

No Blacks, Dogs or Irish.
Avatar 5:06pm glenn:

because protesting naked is the best form of protest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm ifny:

@glenn most of the time. When in doubt, strip. One of their songs features the sounds of chains as they are sent to a penal colony. The Canadian government has been trying to forcibly assimilate them for over 100 years. Naked protesting pacifists armed with TNT and lighters apparently freaks the state out.
Avatar 5:07pm northguineahills:

I've only heard the Elizabeth Cotten version of shake sugaree

except in manitoba in february.
Avatar 5:08pm glenn:

i'm not even sure if the doukhabors are still around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm ifny:

@glenn of course they are. I had beers with one earlier this week.

But yeah, forced assimilation/cultural genocide will fuck anyone's visibility/community up.
Avatar 5:11pm glenn:

so a doukhabeer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Alex In Illinois:

I have a record of Rhiannon Giddens signing Shake Sugaree.

Protesting Naked reminds me: Years ago, when Marshal Field's switched to Macy's, a naked protester showed up to protest the change, but he was the first show up at the door that morning, so he won a gift card for something like several hundred dollars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm ifny:

@Jason Elbogen I poked around and found a Doukhabour song for you if you want it (don't think the chains one is online yet unfort):
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm ifny:

@glenn doukhabeer, nice.
Avatar 5:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Alex: ...w/ no pocket to put it in...

The Doukhabour seem interesting, I'll check it/them out later.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm ifny:

This Griffin song deserves a tortured ukulele cover.
Avatar 5:19pm glenn:

Avatar 5:19pm glenn:

sorry about that hit on sedin.
Avatar 5:20pm kata:

hello "Delilah" by Tom Jones~
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Alex In Illinois:

@RRN63: I guess he had to spend it at that moment, with racks of clothing in front of him. Well, maybe he had to take an escalator to Men's apparel. He probably had to walk past the perfume lady.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm ifny:

@glenn I had to google that...some kind of hockey apology? No worries. I'm one of the anarchists who didn't riot when we had the hockey riots.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm ifny:

I prefer bicycle jousting or Alley Cats.
Avatar 5:25pm glenn:

yes, americans, it's true. canadians WILL riot, as long as it's about something super important, like hockey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm ifny:

Out of the frying pan and into the fire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm ifny:

No, the frying pan is ON the fire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm ifny:

Sizzling vs. immolation.
Avatar 5:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...you flip out of the pan & into the fire beneath it - that's what it means - from bad to even worse...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Alex In Illinois:

A frying pan sits on top of the stove. So it is a way of saying going from bad to worse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm ifny:

Hehe you thought things were bad, and now they're worse. Yes, the fire is the bad thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm ifny:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm ifny:

Ain't no guy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Alex In Illinois:

I'm am still trying to process the idea of Canadians rioting. I think of Canadians as being what we Yankees could be like if we each got an average of 8 hours of sleep every night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm ifny:

Just because I drink doubkabeers and avoid hockey riots doesn't make me a dude. #defaultman
Avatar 5:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

There is beer, however. & you have to keep warm. Presuming no frying pans or furnaces nearby.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm ifny:

@Alex in Illinois: you gotta spend more time on the left coast then. We're volatile, despite the constant contact high.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Alex In Illinois:

I work with Canadians over our company network, not on the left coast, though. Some in the Toronto office and others in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
Avatar 5:33pm northguineahills:

Didn't Vancouver riot over the Canucks a few years back? That was a Canadian riot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm ifny:

@northguineahills Yeah, and the mayor tried to blame it on anarchists at first, who were at home watching it on the internet and shaking their heads. One of many ironies that night.
Avatar 5:37pm glenn:

is gerry hannah still in jail? he was a volatile vancouverite.
Avatar 5:38pm glenn:

jeez. time flies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm ifny:

@AlexInIllinois Not that it isn't happening elsewhere too, but out here there's a strong legacy of people tending to warrior-up for trees, pipelines, indigenous sovereignty, wildlife etc. One more interesting argument for Cascadian Independence ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm ifny:

@glenn Don't think so...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm ifny:

Looks like he got out in 2010 en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm ifny:

@Jason Elbogen fitting @glenn mentions Gerry Hannah during the punk set -- you might want to play some Subhumans :)
Avatar 5:46pm glenn:

or art bergmann.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Alex In Illinois:

@ifny: Well, I have heard about protests, but I didn't think they had become riots.

For example, did you see any footage of the South Koreans protesting the corruption of their president? Singing or chanting in unison, standing in orderly rows, holding candles and flashlights. I think at some points, they just stood together in silence--a calm and serious protest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm ifny:

It bears repeating, this is a great fucking show. And besides the wonderful efforts of our host, part of the reason I feel this way is the comment section.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm ifny:

@Alex news doesn't always travel far. For example, there was a lot of stuff going during the Olympics and Occupy. And riots is often a characterisation by the State anyway, right? It has a certain set of connotations. It is also one tactic among many. And it's often ephemeral (which has specific limitations and strengths). On a related note, sometimes people, especially in Indigeneous circles, talk about being 'land defenders' rather than 'protestors' -- it's a different praxis, though sometimes objectives may be similar/complementary.
Avatar 5:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Too easy to take exceptional quality (...& this surely qualifies as an exception...) for granted. Yes Thank You Mr. Elbogen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm ifny:

But yeah, the word "riot" is a whole can of wormwood :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm melinda:

This has a nice jaunty feel.
  5:56pm Dean:

The melody of "Congratulations" owes something to George Harrison's "It's Johnny's Birthday."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm ifny:

@AlexInIll: I haven't been following SK much but it sure sounds powerful. A Quiet Riot perhaps?
  5:57pm Dean:

Aha! "Although originally given a composer credit to George Harrison, the song takes its melody from Cliff Richard's 1968 hit Congratulations."
Avatar 5:57pm northguineahills:

Thanks Jason, enjoy the weekend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm fred:

Thanks Jason, this was a great show
Avatar 5:59pm glenn:

toodles, doodles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm ifny:

Of course it's real radio. Freeform we do what TF we want. It's interdimensional radio. I used to have an IRC room with my radio show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm ifny:

@glenn great to talk to you. Give my regards to the capital ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm melinda:

Great show! You're right, there isn't really a pre-internet parallel to the WFMU comment board. I like it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Rich in Washington:

I love the interactivity afforded by the WFMU commenting system. It's fun for the listener. It's like a club. Or gang. Or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm ifny:

It's a riot!! Badoomcha~
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Rich in Washington:

The few times I've subbed on GTDR stream, it's been a lot of fun chatting with listeners. I wish my regular station had that kind of interactivity.
I do get nice calls from cabbies, all-night bakery workers, drunk people. Some of them even say they like what I'm playing.
Avatar 6:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Now - there's a thing. Do Comments detract from the Playlist? The right ambience @ a party encourages interaction - I think it's analogous to. I respect every DJ's choice - no playlist, no comments...But listening to other streams I miss Comments & Favoriting...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm ifny:

On Melinda's note, I wonder if maybe CBs were a precursor, if not directly...truckers listening to the same radio station on the road and chatting?
Avatar 6:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Interesting ifny.
