I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Good afternoon Mayuko and listeners. The guys in this photo don't seem to know much about Vertigo. Their loss
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm
fred:

This Hy4_4yh reminds me of Keili's show
Avatar 12:05pm
Mayuko:

Happy new year fred! I think it must be very much her thing, too! I can't survive that more than 3 min.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
Doug Schulkind:

Good day, Mayuko, fred and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
fred:

Do you mean the music or the photo? Happy new year too!
Avatar 12:09pm
Mayuko:

Haha, I meant music but I guess both.
Avatar 12:09pm
Mayuko:

Happy new year, Doug!!!

Mayuko:

This Korean pongtchak-disco thing is something truck drivers (used to) listen to to stay awake, I heard. It could go on forever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
fred:

Well, I guess Eliane Radigue wouldn't be a good choice for these truck drivers. Though her music can go forever too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
fred:

Golden Teacher sure is different from Blue Sabbath Black Fiji
Avatar 12:30pm
Mayuko:

Yeah, it indeed can be played at a party and people wouldn't leave, haha. Although I wouldn't mind a party playing Blue Sabbath Black Fiji all night at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
Webhamster Henry:

Hi Mayuko! Happy New Year!

Happy new year to you too, Webhamster Henry! Thank you for tuning in!

BSBF got a little dancier before the breakup.
I actually have a WFMU DJ premium called "Clear the Party So You Can Go to Sleep"

Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Mayuko and all. Welcome to a most vertiginous new year.
Avatar 12:48pm

Ah, apparently it was good to play that old-fashioned Korean disco for drivers. Drive safe Jesse, and thanks for listening!

Welcome on board, Dave in Vermont! Happy new year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
fred:

I watched the Hy4_4yh video with the sound off and Dachshund on. It probably made more sense this way, especially the ice cream shots (is the ice cream reference why you played them?)
Avatar 12:54pm
Mayuko:

EXACTLY, fred, EXACTLY. >ice cream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
fred:

Well, it worked on me. I'm eating ice cream now
Avatar 12:57pm
Mayuko:

Also, one of them is somehow playing Kogarashi Monjiro, a famous character in Edo period drama on TV in Japan www.bs-tbs.co.jp... and the other woman is playing Basho Matsuo, the famous Haiku poet. upload.wikimedia.org... I do not know why.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
fred:

I don't think "why" applies to this video
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
Brian in UK:

Hello Mayuko. I have bought a Japanese calligraphy set and rice paper for our daughters' forthcoming birthday. She is trying, somehow, to learn Japanese, self taught.

I always dug the slightly more mellow JPop stuff from with groovier melodies, like the songs from Especia!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm
fred:

That video was more like 100% WTF
  1:15pm
Rickwaukee:

Can I use your 'have to go cut some lumber'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
fred:

Speaking of Japan, Sonic Protest will feature Phew this year. I'm really happy about that (though Nihilist Spasm Band remains the highlight for me)
  1:19pm
Chris Crash:

Oh HELL YEAH this is the stuff I love...reminds me slightly of Thee Michele Gun Elephant
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm

Wow, this Gaseneta is not what I usually expect from PSF, except the quality
Avatar 1:22pm

@Chris Crash I thought you said "mellow"?! haha! Welcome on board!!

Brian in UK:

This is what Bill Mac might be playing.
Avatar 1:23pm
Mayuko:

Brian in UK, good luck to your daughter. I was terrible at that Japanese calligraphy thing. Bad at origami too. I can't do anything Japanese too well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm

Bill Mac will be filling in for Uncle Michael and Hinky Dinky Time on Friday, February 24!

What can I say? I'm a multifaced demon :D. I like my pop groovy and dancey and my rock raw and fast!
Avatar 1:24pm
Mayuko:

Haha, Rickwaukee, sure, but I wasn't kidding!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
Brian in UK:

Mayuko, how can you write that with your paper cut skills.
Avatar 1:26pm
Jason Elbogen:

Hey Mayuko! How have you been? When you said 'cut lumber', do you mean actual trees (like in the forest)?
Avatar 1:28pm
Mayuko:

@Brian in UK you're right, I'm good at using a knife, and flying a kite. Those are Japanese things too. I feel positive now!
Avatar 1:29pm
Dave B:

hey there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
fred:

That Franz Snake track was interesting. I'm still not sure whether I liked it or not, bit I'm definitely intrigued
Avatar 1:35pm
Mayuko:

Jason, I've been good! The lumber I'm supposed to cut is something we'll bring in from Home depot or something, woodworking workshop at my work place. Is there more proper word than lumber for this??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
fred:

This Jin Hi Kim track is lovely so far

DAVE B! The person responsible for the cause of this hyper pollution in my brain! Welcome on board!!!
Avatar 1:41pm
Dave B:

It's catchy isn't it. Had to re-research the genre of music hy4_4yh is referencing - it's out of Jakarta and is called "funkot"

rateyourmusic.com...
Avatar 1:42pm
Mayuko:

Yeah, fred, that Franz Snake was from a compilation in which people are try to bring in some re-interpretation of Japanese traditional dance music (ondo) mixed with Gorge, a club music from Nepal mountainous area. I thought it was an interesting attempt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm
fred:

@Dave B: "use of cowbell"??? Is that a SNL reference?
Avatar 1:45pm
Jason Elbogen:

Well, 'Lumberjacks' are usually large men with beards and axes who cut down trees. It seems most people use 'lumber' and 'wood' interchangeably, though, so no worries.
Avatar 1:45pm
Mayuko:

I found some funcot mixes on youtube, but I stopped listening not to die. I can't handle it for more than 5 min. Need to eat a lot and sleep 8 hours to listen to another 5 min.
Avatar 1:45pm
northguineahills:

A happy surprise it's Mayuko, and I have to leave in 10 minutes! Souper happy Niew Cheery ears!
Avatar 1:47pm
Dave B:

It is the cure to what ails ya Fred! Some of the funkot stuff I've stumbled across uses some mad cowbell!

And yep Mayuko - that BPM is twice normal. It is good for making the enemy crack...
Avatar 1:48pm
Mayuko:

Happy new year to you too, northguineahills!!! Thanks for listening, stay warm wherever you're going!

@Dave B: A friend of mine has a track called "cowbells" on his latest record, where he namedrops BOC's "Fear the reaper" and the chorus is "I like cowbells". He said he had never seen the SNL skit when I asked him. Weirdest thing is he's probably telling the truth
Avatar 1:53pm

These music has consumed energy and made me too hungry to keep on going!

I HAVE cowbells and like em too!

Thanks Mayuko, as ever.
My friend's name is Benjamin Bret, his record "le ganglion du pangolin" is in the station's library (I told him to send it to the station). Most songs are in French and based on puns though

And don't pay too much attention to what Jason said about lumberjacks. According to the scientific authority Dave B quoted about Blancmange, it's not that straightforward: youtu.be...

hey mayu missed your show. did ya know if you buy round ticket to JPN you may purchase domestic flight within the trip days for only $100 per flight!? Okinawa next!

btw you really should get 淡谷のり子 全曲集 they did awesome mastering job on this 60's recording to pristine new life like she sung Showa songs yesterday.
Avatar 10:44am
Mayuko:

@fred haha, since now it's clear that lumberjack is not mutually exclusive with pressing flowers and wearing skirt, I can be a lumberjack too no problem!
Avatar 10:47am

@zzmz THAT IS AMAZING!!! Thanks for that tip!!!!! Yes you should definitely go to Okinawa and send me some Sata andagi donuts from there, please. & thanks re: Noriko comp too, I'll def check it out!
