I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Got the station on and making waffles for a very late breakfast. Hey hey, Mayuko and all!
Avatar 12:00pm fred:

Hello Mayuko, james and all listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Heyo! Just half a day to go until 2017!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Dave in Vermont:

good day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Doug Schulkind:

Any day with Play Vertigo is a good day.
Avatar 12:02pm Mayuko:

Hello, thank you for tuning in, james, fred, Ken and Dave!!!
Avatar 12:02pm Mayuko:

Doug!! Great to have you here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm doctorjazz:

Hi all!
Avatar 12:12pm Mayuko:

Hi doctorjazz, welcome on board!
  12:12pm P-9O:

明けましておめでとうございます, Mayuko!
It is an honor to be with you here today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I did a little searching for Max Ernst's artwork and come across a page with some other lively images. www.liladeva.com
Avatar 12:17pm Mayuko:

Ah! It IS already new year there in Japan, akemashite omedetou to you too P-90 although that greeting is a bit early for us, haha! Happy to have you here to spend the last few hours of 2016 together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm melinda:

hi Mayuko and folks! Here for a bit before I take my nap.
  12:21pm P-90:

In my probably worthless opinion, Max Ernst was one of THE key artists of the 20th Century. Also admired by and influence of many other well-recognized artists of that period.
Avatar 12:25pm Mayuko:

Not that I am knowledgeable of his art, but I like Max Ernst too. Especially his paintings of monster looking things. They look like having a great time somehow. Hard to tell serious or funny.
Avatar 12:26pm fred:

@P-90: Yet Magritte draws the crowds. There's an exhibition next to where I work, the line is around 2 hours to get inside the museum, then probably one hour more to actually get in. More if you have to buy a ticket. It's one of the longest line I've seen in years. I guess one reason is that Magritte works have been widely used on everything from notebooks to T-shirts. Marketing trumps all
Avatar 12:27pm Mayuko:

Hi melinda! nap to get ready for a new years eve party? thank you for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm melinda:

Just a nap to recover from my Saturday nature walk...fatigue issues. Spending the Eve at home w/movie.
Avatar 12:33pm Mayuko:

Saturday nature walk, sounds like a great way to spend the last day of the year! I'm planning to wake up early and get a morning coffee with sunrise and then take a walk in Central Park for the new years day. no party for me either.
Avatar 12:33pm fred:

I got to see Thymolphthalein 4 or 5 years ago. Impressive lineup there, but I don't think they're likely to play together again anytime soon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm melinda:

That sounds lovely, Mayuko.
Avatar 12:35pm Mayuko:

I like Magritte too, but feels a little too clever for my taste maybe. although that's probably why he's so popular. It is impressive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Scraps:

bump de dump dump

Avatar 12:37pm Mayuko:

Hallos, Scraps! Thank you for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Scraps:

Max Ernst is great. Also Yves Tanguy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Scraps:

h'lo Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Doug Schulkind:

Wow, LOVED that piece!
Avatar 12:49pm Mayuko:

I thought that piece was great too!
Avatar 12:49pm Brian in UK:

Hello Mayuko. Max Ernst's picture has dare I say it a Japanese feel to it.

I wonder if Rene Magritte was much of a joke teller.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Scraps:

"this is not a pipe"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Scraps:

a piece from the Guardian: "Why Magritte was like a standup comedian":

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Scraps:

but everything could be played in a profane environment!
Avatar 12:56pm fred:

@Doug: Will Guthrie (drummer in Thymolphthalein) is a personal favorite
  1:00pm Joe McG:

I kind of like the idea of removing music from one context to create a new context. You don't kill it, you just temporarily relocate it. It never leaves the original context anyway. It just multiplies, like sea monkeys. But of course I have this attitude--I'm also on WFMU. Happy new year, Mayuko!
Avatar 1:00pm Brian in UK:

Grits aint grocery
Eggs aint poultry
and Mona Lisa was a man.
(Little Willie John) Think I prefer Willie's take on surreal matters. A much over used word these days.
Magrittes' work is SO tidy and neat, that is why I cannot take his joke taking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Scraps:

"It never leaves the original context anyway."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Doug Schulkind:

I must learn more about him/them!
Avatar 1:03pm fred:

The start of this story sounds like something Kure Kure Takora would do
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Scraps:

Of course, I am a privigeled white American.

But, shrug. {the sound of a p.w.a.}
Avatar 1:04pm Brian in UK:

My avatar was first a photograph then it was blown up and a small part expanded and a kind of frame added to change the original beyond recognition; by Lee Miller.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Scraps:

that's a lot of context! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Dave in Vermont:

Brian, it reminds me of Woman in the Dunes and L'Aventurra.
Avatar 1:13pm Mayuko:

Hello Brian in UK! Magritte being a joke teller - that reminds me of a conversation I had with someone a long long time ago - he said he didn't like Duchamp, said he's not an artist but a comedian. I thought it was actually a pretty good compliment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm doctorjazz:

Very pretty.
Avatar 1:18pm Brian in UK:

Duchamp was a plumber?
Avatar 1:21pm Brian in UK:

This is an interesting interview with the plumber.
Avatar 1:23pm fred:

I liked this Plastic Hooligans track
Avatar 1:23pm Brian in UK:

fred it had an intangible quality, like being under water.
  1:24pm Jesse k:

Avatar 1:25pm Brian in UK:

Do you think that Waltzing Matilda was the equivalent of Happy Birthday that was sung as the first telephone message.
Avatar 1:26pm Mayuko:

I like that idea too, Joe. Same reason I like collage art, both visual and audio (& WFMU for sure.) Something mischievous about it (although, I guess, museums are not doing that to play around.)
I should have thought this through a bit more before I talk cos it's actually quite interesting to think about!

ANYWAY Glad to have you here & happy new year to you too!!!!!!!!
Avatar 1:27pm Mayuko:

Hello Jesse!!!!! Happy to have you here!
Avatar 1:28pm Mayuko:

@fred when one is a trouble maker, s/he is not much different from kure kure takora indeed.
Avatar 1:36pm Starwick:

Hi Everyone! Lovely show so far!
Avatar 1:36pm fred:

I guess museums are mainly scrambling for funding these days. The one next door want to put out a book for its 40th anniversary, with "whimsical" pictures of the staff. I escaped that because I was in a hospital at the time. Good timing, though I now realize I could have put a WFMU T-shirt in there
  1:37pm rw:

Avatar 1:40pm Mayuko:

Hallos, Starwick, glad to have you on board! Thanks for tuning in, rw!!
Avatar 1:43pm Brian in UK:

fred Centre Pompidou is forty? I remember going over in 1980, there was much debate about the style of CP.
Avatar 1:46pm fred:

@Brian: yep, it's that old. Which means there have been a lot of retirement parties lately (composers don't retire, they die, no party then, they're selfish to the end)
Avatar 1:46pm Mayuko:

Museum puts out a book with its staffers on it? Why did they want to do that? All the staff from its 40 years history would be fun to see, but.
Avatar 1:48pm fred:

@Mayuko: Beats me. Probably some lame-ass attempt to connect with the "selfie generation". They're that out of touch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm melinda:

That reminds me of the Starbucks down the street from where I work, which decorates its windows with giant portraits of staff, with their names. They're paintings on the windows, rather than photos, but still. I would really resent that as an employee.
Avatar 1:51pm Mayuko:

Haha! I really think it would have been interesting to see how the staff changed (or not) over time though, like age, sex, race and stuff. There could have been a few with WFMU T-shirt on.
Avatar 1:53pm Mayuko:

@melinda Those staff at the Starbucks are being punished that way for being bad, that's my guess.
Avatar 1:57pm fred:

@Mayuko: Sadly, it's very white (and male except for administrative jobs). Age has been going up with the lifers there. I'm known as a feminist there since the mandatory sensitivity training we had early this year. Had me say intersectionality out loud many times, which I often fumble. Hopefully I didn't fumble explaining what it means (early returns are positive)
Avatar 1:59pm fred:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Ken From Hyde Park:

"Five Hundred Miles" was really nice. Kind of a snowstorm feel to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Doug Schulkind:

There will be no D:O Radio with Jeff Golick tomorrow morning. But there WILL BE two new shows joining the Drummer Stream this coming week. Sliding over from WFMU proper will be 100% Whatever with Mary Wing (6-9am ET) on Tuesdays, and DJ MIcah (6-9am ET) on Fridays. Please tune in and welcome them to Give the Drummer Radio family.

Peace, love and blessings to you all for a (dare I say) happy 2017!!
Avatar 2:06pm fred:

Thanks Mayuko. I hope 2017 will bring you a green card and a 3-hour show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Scraps:

thank you Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Scraps:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm listener james from westwood:

Be well and be safe, Mayuko—thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for 2016, Mayuko. Happy 2017 to all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Mayuko!
  2:11pm Ivan:

Shibahama reminds me of a story originally from France called The Necklace. But it's kind of opposite. Happy new year everyone!
  2:11pm P-9O:

Thank you Mayuko, and thanks so much for Play Vertigo!
  2:12pm rw:

Thank you Mayuko! Hear you next year!
Avatar 2:13pm Mayuko:

Whoa, great news Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm paul b:

Thank you Mayuko for these shows. Heres to a hopeful postive and constructive 2017.
Avatar 2:14pm Mayuko:

Thank YOU all for listening and we'll have great time in 2017 too! HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
  2:15pm Jesse k:

Thanks Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Ken From Hyde Park:

How's come the pop-up stream goes haywire when one show ends and the next one starts? I have to reload the web page to straighten it out.
Avatar 2:19pm Mayuko:

@Ken I've noticed that happened too - always need to re-start the player, wfmu tech people are aware of it though so I hope it'll be resolved in 2017!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Arigatō, Mayuko. I had a hunch they'd be aware of it and working on a solution.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi and Happy New Year, Mayuko! I'm listening to the archive because I was watching mochi get pounded yesterday.
Yes Centre Pompidou is 40 - I was there opening day (Just by chance)!
Avatar 12:07pm Mayuko:

Happy 2017 to you too, Webhamster Henry! I had mochi too so new year's mission accomplished!
