Curtis is spoken of as the influence representing Hendrix's spiritual lyrical Soul aspect - but I'm not sure I've ever heard/read Jimi reference him directly? Curtis had his own open tuning on his Strat - grew up around charismatic Church - a definitive voice. But you know all that.

Why was there a mono mix in the US in tha late 60's anyway? I thought that was an English thing, preferring mono, and even there it had pretty much been settled in favor of stereo by the late 60's.

I remember going to EJ Korvettes Downtown Brooklyn, in the mid 60's and seeing mono versions and stereo versions, it would be a dollar less for the mono (was it $2.99 and $3.99? Don't recall exactly, that was the ballpark...). By the late60's that had disappeared, only stereo albums on the racks.

The whole thing with the Beatles Mono box set reissues was supposed to be that the Mono was considered the important mix, that was the one they focused on, the Stereo was a concession to the US market that was much more stereo oriented, and was an afterthought.

If i'm not wrong, Gris-Gris came out early in '68, which would still be in the stereo/mono release era. I think the stereo mix is better. Some of the cool panning is lost in the mono mix.

interesting info about the Beatles/mono recordings. I thought that psychedelic back-and-forth sound thing emphasized in Rubber Soul and Sgt Pepper was an enhancemnt that they embraced

'Rubber Soul' in 1965 (early days for Stereo in their case) originally had a Stereo mix w/ instruments separated hard Left & Right. You could hear them just Playing - or just Singing by turning the Balance knob that way. & we always used it to test speaker connections that way & such. When they were issued on CD (I think it was), George Martin did a new Stereo mix from the original masters. Also for 'Help!' ? The Beatles' 1st two albums - 'Please Please Me' & 'With the Beatles' from '63 - were still only recorded on two-track machines, w/ basically instruments on one & vocals the other - so Stereo for them is limited to that! By Pepper in '67 - there were two distinct mixes for Mono & Stereo - & much discussion of their differences & relative merits. Lennon himself said if you haven't heard Pepper in Mono, you haven't heard it. People go track-by-track in terms of their preferences - but not a few say the Mono Pepper is the weightier creature, when many critique Pepper for being too flowery, or something...
In the U.S. - Tom Dowd @ Atlantic for instance had had eight-track machines & such for a long time! TheBeatles had the genius of George Martin & the professional dedication of 'white-coated' British Engineers - but not til '68 & the 'White Album' did they even start to get beyond four-track recording. 'Abbey Road' in '69 was technologically a whole different animal than all the rest of their catalog - & only then was there no Mono release.

But, at the same time, EMI was recording great stereo orchestral records (audiophiles consider them collectable, and they sell for a premium), no "Beatles stereo", with the strings on the left and the horns all on the right. Mike placement probably had a lot to do with it, along with a desire to GET a good stereo mix.
