Listener comments!
9:05am : Good morning, Bob, and fellow listeners. The fog has burned off the NY metro area, and it's looking to be a splendid Saturday. Thanks for the Skeletons.9:07am : R.I.P. Bobby Lloyd Hicks9:08am : Good morning, Bob. I know Pete is singing here. Whoe is playing the flute?
Thanks.9:08am : Good mornin` Bob and all others.
The Skeletons are always welcome.
Lou Whitney is an unrecognized giant.9:09am : Ditto the RIP BLH too, by the way.9:14am : R.I.P. Larry Coryell9:15am : A lovely 3-hour Larry Coryell tribute on Irene Trudell's show - www.wfmu.org...9:16am : ...I'm going to become informed of another notable talent through their obituary tribute I see. [Big sigh.]
I didn't even know Coryell really as more than a name revered amongst guitarists. Irene Trudell helped remedy that w/ a beautiful tribute Tues. Makes an interesting comparison/contrast to McLaughlin. Also stunning technique but straighter to the feeling, w/ broad inspirations across genres?🥁 9:18am : Nice choices for Larry C.9:18am : Haven't heard this hilarious kites song in years!9:19am : This is insane!9:24am : I had to go feed the neighbor's cat and missed both Free Design and Tim Hardin, bummer.9:27am : Such refreshment! Like a good morning coffee.
Thank you!9:40am : Hoping you would play The Rumor -- that tune stands among The Band's best!!! They also released some really nice live versions (expanded Rock of Ages box?)9:41am : Thanks for "The Rumor." Sad to think that all 3 vocalists are no longer with us. Long live The Band.9:43am : "ain't no more cane" is another good tune to hear them distinctly as they all sing a different verse.9:43am : You can tell Rick Danko by the warble in his voice. Levon always sounded like Levon. Richie Manuel's voice always sounded like a perfect slide guitar riff.9:48am : Voices in the same band that sound quite similar - it's a Thing. TheBeatles certainly used it. Makes for great blends - like doubling the same voice - & interesting dynamics in the mind (who dat?). Like a Spector-BrianWilson mixing effect...9:53am : ...for one thing - the Singer is often (not always) the Writer - so it can be helpful to know then...9:59am : You know I was wrong about The Band...you've turned my head around Bob...these guys are great!10:06am : Agreed with the African music commentary. Rob Weisberg and Meghan are great resources for that trove.10:15am : The talk about voice blending reminds me of when Bob was on a Byrds jag and would play tracks, pointing out where the voices were practically indistinguishable.10:27am : I've heard many versions of "Jim Dandy," but not this one. Thanks!10:32am : @Stuart: They were all emulating the Everlys - just no way to beat the Kentucky brothers for two-part harmony. Irwin & a guest pointed out that Brian Wilson & brothers had a background in studying the Four Freshman's arrangements & such that TheBeatles just didn't have. The bYRdS themselves have pointed out that - you think they're doing three parts - but was usually Roger & Gene doubling the same part & Crosby using his natural gift to do really creative (& beautiful & impressive) harmonies on top.10:37am : Unfortunately you have to add Chaloff to that sad tale.10:40am : OMG--thanks for this Flo Ballard cut! Haven't heard this on the air for decades.10:42am : Was that post Supremes FB?10:48am : This is just delightfully nonsensical. Thank you.🥁 10:53am : I always remember seeing the Roger Nichols LP on A&M innersleeves.10:53am : Thanks, Rev. That really clarifies things for me. Roger and Gene doubling the same part- yeah, that's what would fool my ears. (Where did Roger go? He was just there a second ago.)
With the last incarnation of the Byrds- the Albert Hall live set, for instance- there wasn't that kind of matching.
I did know about the Brian Wilson's love of the Four Freshmen. Damn lucky that Brian had all those voices at hand to take a stab at emulating that harmony sound.10:54am : 1948. A tune whose precise history would be fascinating to know...or just the lyrics! This seems right on the nexus of Boogie & R&B~R/n/R...So many of us owe the Stones for giving us a clue (ironic being in the U.S. of course)...11:00am : Thanks for a wonderful Saturday morning, Bob.11:00am : @Stuart: Probably a *lot* of recordings people doubling their own vocals we don't even think about it - & that's the Analog era...They say TheBeatles getting ADT - artificial electronic doubling by slightly altering the signal & making two out of it - eased Lennon's limited patience starting around 'Revolver'...
- Thx BB Sir !2:24pm : Bump Step - 3rd time in the last 6 months I'm aware of that you've played it. Apparently you're as enamored of this odd, groovy record as I am. Wondering if this could be considered the first rap record (albeit over a Middle Eastern groove).
