On Pickwick no less! Amazing! Nice find!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm

@Fuzzy: This song is possibly the best thing on Pickwick that didn't have any Lou Reed involvement.

did the vocalist from Tribe guest on the Airplane's 'Lather'? bet they did! :-)
Avatar 8:33pm
Linda Lee:

sublime show so far .. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
Gaylord Fields:

The vocalist is singing "forked" (two syllables), in case a representative of the FCC is monitoring this program.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Linda Lee: I'll take that as incentive to try to keep it going. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
Gaylord Fields:

I love a good accidental locked groove!

Thanks Gaylord, I just ordered The Lewis Sisters /You Need Me EP at Discogs. btw my favorite rack from your show ever was Smokey Roberds /We've Only Just Began..., there is nice CM video on youtube too.
  8:40pm
evita:

Quite the remix, here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm
Gaylord Fields:

@zm: That Smokey Roberds version is a really nice rendition of a favorite song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
Gaylord Fields:

@evita: That was by my favorite remixer: DJ Worn Groove!
  8:43pm
evita:

But that Kleenex made my night.
Avatar 8:43pm
Linda Lee:

always love what happens to sound on vinyl over time ~ how each disc develops its own 'personality' because of what happens to it. just love the medium ~ always did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
Gaylord Fields:

@evita: In the early 80s I went irredeemably mad over everything Kleenex/Liliput did!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Dusty - stating the obvious but - imagine someone w/ that voice being so insecure...it's a nutty world.
  8:50pm

The 80's are sorely missed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
maestroso:

Wow, this is a great Dusty track!
  8:56pm
zm:

I thought Smoky Roberds wrote it for Crocker Bank TV ad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVGmdwHTP1I There was interview of Richard how he got his arrangement approval from Smokey (i.e. Roger Nichols) at parking lot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
Gaylord Fields:

@maestroso: It's certainly an outlier in Dusty's catalog, but good heavens does it scorch the Earth!
Avatar 8:59pm
Scraps:

h'lo beeble h'lo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm
Gaylord Fields:

@zm: Smokey Roberds and Roger Nichols are separate people. Nichols and Paul Williams wrote it initially as a Crocker Bank ad, and Roberds (under the name Freddie Allen) released it first on White Whale.
Avatar 9:03pm

Liliput is awesome!

I liked this track on Cornelius's album -- Fantasma? -- hadn't heard it in this take

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

You say FC = 'BestAlbumEver' I wouldn't fight ya.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm
Gaylord Fields:

@maestroso: I've referred to that one and only Wayfarers LP as being either 20 years too late or 10 years too early.
Avatar 9:14pm
Linda Lee:

you are just amazing Mr. Fields. wow. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Carmichael: 100% Arthur on that one; Bryan's best moment on FC is "Alone Again Or."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm
maestroso:

@Gaylord: well now I must hunt it down.
Avatar 9:19pm
Carmichael:

No kidding? I guess I'm no judge after all. I didn't figure Lee for writing so softly and insightfully.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's Arthur describing the 'scene' w/ irony & the mind game of implying words not sung - very him. Great Yin/Yang dynamic him & Bryan...part of why that album is so rich but perfectly balanced...
Avatar 9:22pm
Linda Lee:

amazing .. music i dismissed as 'corny' when new .. sounds so beautiful to Older Me. aging, or wiser? :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the person singing is most often the writer - maybe in Rawk bands especially? Clearly not a rule...
@Linda: I think back & remember laughing @ stuff while also liking it on some other level. Course, kids do that...Not my relation to current Pop40...
Avatar 9:25pm
Linda Lee:

no, mine either. no idea really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm
Uncle Michael:

The stuff I like now that I was supposed to mock then, I liked then. Long live pop. Not that I get the pop of now. But that's not a problem for me, nor the people making it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm

Some velvet mornng? THIS velvet morning.

Linda Lee:

Verlaine!!! sweet! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Growing up in the 1970s - that was a time of change for the Music Market - & I guess the Craft. I remember knowing I was over-exposed to say - 'Tie a Yellow Ribbon'. But I knew it was a good Pop song, to the extent I understood such things then (or ever). We knew what a Hook was when it was in us...
Avatar 9:35pm
Linda Lee:

absolutely! raised on em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
melinda:

This is beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Uncle Michael:

What makes that a good pop song is that I hated it then...don't think of it now...but I know every damned word of it.
Avatar 9:36pm
Opal:

Very soothing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...but maybe they felt the same in the 1920s - & now...
So he can play guitar can Tom...speaking of BestAlbumsEver...
Right UM.
Avatar 9:37pm
Linda Lee:

i hear the first birds singing on a mountain morning in the Verlaine. very clever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
melinda:

The whole concept of what we like vs. what we're supposed to like (is it cool, or age-appropriate) is an interesting one.
Avatar 9:41pm
Linda Lee:

a lifetime of listening to music has got to circle around that question :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Uncle Michael:

I've bucked against it for as long as I can remember. I try to avoid polluting matters of taste with both "cool" and "age-appropriate". How else could I play a record that came out when I was 19...if were 110 today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Lotsa gittar players - but that's Touch.
...Also re A.M. Gold & the Pop40 & all - on one hand, we took so much for granted in Culture - but yeah - it was Serious Business in Modernism. Here in PostPostPost-Modernism, we're used to buffet-style Culture. We don't expect any Statement to be so Life or Death - or to provide Answers so much...I sometimes think. Tho' I think FMUvians give a serious sh*t about Music...
Avatar 9:43pm
Linda Lee:

.. while keeping our healthy skepticism :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Somewhere I learned early that the Greats all had big ears & Eclectic tastes - tho' I respect a dedicated & focused Purist (/Stylist). This is characteristic of Music - & I think Wynton Marsalis said it. You can close your eyes - but not your ears.
Avatar 9:45pm
Linda Lee:

brilliant. right on there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Uncle Michael:

Our personal tastes aside, we can stipulate that dance, theater, visual arts, film, "serious music" and literature of significant merit transcend fashion and break free of time. Why it should be so different for vernacular and popular music eludes me.
Avatar 9:47pm
Linda Lee:

someone chatting with Charlie Parker in some famous interview was shocked at his wide-ranging tastes. but why?
Avatar 9:49pm
Linda Lee:

& then there's the vernacular that transcends the vernacular. pop + time = classiic? :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Gaylord. Hope you can enjoy the warm weather this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- & Burt & Dionne here illustrating when Pop & Art collided - like - still waiting to not be fixated by the 1960s - but it hasn't happened yet...
People don't understand that Jazz Artists are most often as disciplined as Classical ones. Ask other Musicians about the mind of Bird.
After Modernism - what is 'Classical'? 'Folk'? 'Popular'? After the 20thCentury - what is Civilization or Sanity, for that matter...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
maestroso:

Wow. Lush. Great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Uncle Michael:

Classic to me signifies that its merits transcend the elements that date it. I don't like "classic" as a code word for of-a-certain-vintage very much.

Oh hell yeah, that "Big Love" is grand.
