You might've heard of guitarist Stephen Griesbraber from his previous musical endeavor, the dreamlike all-instrumental ensemble Redhooker. Now he's turned to writing and vocalizing with his latest band project, Stephen Karl and Handsome Animals. It's an exploration of American songwriting in the tradition of Townes Van Zandt, Tom Waits, and Bruce Springsteen. Stephen Karl and Handsome Animals played live.

Irene Trudel's show is so, so good tonight. "Cindy" by Stephen Karl & Handsome Anumals blew me away. Maybe its not supposed to, but that song hit hard. A happy song? Not for me, but a great one. Somehow deeper than intended perhaps. Excellent!
