Hey Joe and everyone. Back in college I interviewed Dick Hyman's daughter (Judy Hyman of the Horse Flies) for our school paper. It was such a cool, fun interview and she obviously learned a lot from her dad. But due to some miscommunications between me and the editors, the piece never made it into the paper. So I feel a pang of guilt every time I hear Dick Hyman, or the Horse Flies.

Thought this was a 1965 tribute at first (best year for pop?)

@Miles: it's when the DJ or just an MC speaks over the record, often to exhort the crowd. Sometimes its comic, sometimes to shout out a town, sometimes to boast of one's musical prowess, and also to critique/castigate one's enemies. The best do so in rhyme and growly yet melodic cadences. Some guys became straight up toasters, and recordings of their toasting became in demand. U-Roy was the master of this.

U-Roy may have been the master, but possibly my 2 favorite toasting tracks are Lee Perry. ("dreader locks" and his rap on the gatherers' "words"..."lion a de winner"[?])
