Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
ahhhh Gaylord and everyone hope your weekend is long or as long as you can make it ,, just walked in the door after a great Sunday and ,, ahhhhh ,, the Donald Byrd .. is like just sit back and again ahhh ..
@Chuck: The thing about WFMU is that really great shows often leave, but then new shows get a chance to show how great they can be. After all, even a show like Miracle Nutrition once took the place of some other beloved program when it was new.
So true, Gaylord. I used to have a favorite punk show that I'd plant myself in the backyard and drink beer
and enjoy for an hour each week. Then it was gone suddenly, no explanation.
I had to learn to love new, brave volunteer DJs and the music they taught.
This is what big "C" Catholics call "ongoing conversion!"
None of us can ever grasp the whole thing in a single lifetime.
If Dave gets a book out I will be glad to buy and read same!
Thank you, Gaylord. My friend Michael Weldon used to operate the Psychotronic store in NYC, described Sammy visiting the store once. Certainly, a character worthy of documentation.
To paraphrase Paul Theroux:
People who LISTEN widely and with fervor learn a language and inhabit a world that is different from the world of a non-listener. I don't mean the deaf, who develop special skills of observation.
Nonlisteners are merely idle and arrogant and obtuse.
And by listeners, I don't mean chasers of the latest tunes, but rather wanderers in the whole realm of music. All its thickets and caverns, the seldom trodden pathways among wayward geniuses!
