I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

ICE CREAM GANG'S TURF WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Ice Cream Gang Allegedly Pushing Mister Softee Out Of Midtown" (News from a year ago......) gothamist.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am listener james from westwood:

Sounds like that ice cream vendor faces...
[puts on sunglasses]
... a rocky road.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am listener james from westwood:

Bad ice cream puns aside, that story is wild. I see our friend to the left has declared his fealty to Mister Softee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am David D:

What happened? Those ice cream vendors used to all be in Good Humor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm listener james from westwood:

Good one, David!
Avatar 12:01pm fred:

Good afternoon Mayuko, James, David, and other ice cream loving listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm listener james from westwood:

I remember playing a Playstation game called Twisted Metal 2 that featured a killer clown named Sweettooth driving a ice cream truck loaded Death Race style with weapons. I recall it any time I see a truck to this day.
Avatar 12:07pm Mayuko:

Guys, stop making me laugh. This is a serious matter!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm listener james from westwood:

My guess was this was Nitzer Ebb, and I was not far off.
Avatar 12:11pm fred:

I don't think there are many (any?) ice cream truck over here. With Ramadan, not sure it would work in my neighborhood these days
Avatar 12:12pm fred:

"Etre assis ou danser" translates to "sitting or dancing"
Avatar 12:14pm Mayuko:

You can eat ice cream sitting or dancing.
Avatar 12:16pm Mayuko:

There was one ice cream truck jingle I used to hear often in Tokyo, that always say "if you don't hurry, you'll miss me!" to make the neighbor children anxious. Not cool strategy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, all. The official National Ice Cream Day isn't until July 16, but I'll have a scoop today anyway. www.timeanddate.com...
Avatar 12:24pm fred:

I guess you're still not allowed to bring ice cream into the studio, so someone with an ice cream truck should consider stopping by Montgomery St around 2pm
Avatar 12:27pm Mayuko:

Hi Ken! Yes that important date is still far ahead. It was National Donut Day yesterday though, and I celebrate it HARD.
Avatar 12:28pm Mayuko:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm doctorjazz:

Heading out on dog walk, pass the Little League games, there's always an ice truck there, now I'm tempted...
Avatar 12:30pm Mayuko:

@fred YES!!! But I wonder who OWNS Jersey city area. I don't take the side of Master Softee aka New York Ice Cream! >:(
Avatar 12:31pm Mayuko:

doctorjazz! Be careful, that truck could be Master Softee, the fake Mister Softee, trying to trap you!!
Avatar 12:33pm fred:

Don't worry, it looks like Master Softee was a Manhattan thing
Avatar 12:39pm Mayuko:

I feel like I got trapped in Brooklyn before myself though >:( This turf war has been taking place for years apparently, and insidious for innocent good citizens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm doctorjazz:

Safe here in the burbs of Joisey, I guess.
Should hold out, though, having a birthday party for my younger daughter this afternoon, and we'll have an ice cream cake...
Avatar 12:41pm Jason Elbogen:

This book has ruined ice cream (and all dessert actually) for me:
Avatar 12:43pm fred:

Jason! When are you coming back?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm listener james from westwood:

Don't see them as ice cream truck tunes. See them as numbers station tones for networks of young sleeper agents.
Avatar 12:48pm fred:

This Disastrous Consequences track was quite nice
Avatar 12:51pm Jason Elbogen:

Hey Fred... I'd like to come back this month at least a few times because my wife and baby are in Beijing (I'm joining them in July). I was hoping to temporarily go back to my old slot, but it's being taken over in a few weeks.
  12:54pm Rickwaukee:

  12:55pm rw:

I don't know, man. Waffle cones are pretty delicious too.
  12:56pm Rickwaukee:

"WAFFEL" cone -Mayuko, so cute I am dead
Avatar 1:00pm northguineahills:

I now somewhat ironically miss the Mister Softee jingle now that I don't hear it EVERY WAKING HOUR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm listener james from westwood:

Useless stock trivia: Not uncommon for Microsoft to be called Mister Softee by traders, some of whom in the roaring 90s may have nicked out of their day-trading office for a vanilla cone or two during periods of weak volatility.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm listener james from westwood:

I stand by my full-calendar ice cream position!
  1:04pm mdashkin:

Hi Mayuko & All-

I just saw this in the New York Times and couldn't resist passing it along:

‘Pop Goes the Weasel’ at Carnegie Hall
"On Wednesday, as patrons were heading into Carnegie Hall for the Met Orchestra’s Mahler program, a big ice cream truck pulled up on 57th Street and parked right near the entrance to the hall. The vendor switched on the truck’s prerecorded jingle: a tinkling, out-of-tune, rhythmically jittery version of “Pop Goes the Weasel.” Not what you want to hear before the “Titan” Symphony."

Looks like ce cream trucks muscling-in on the classical music industry now!
Avatar 1:04pm northguineahills:

Even in NYC, I ate ice cream all year (and I'm lactose intolerant). I remember visiting my grandparents in WV for Xmas as a kid and being disappointed and confused that the Dairy Cream was closed for the winter. The one in my neighborhood down south was open all year.
Avatar 1:05pm northguineahills:

I prefer 3rd Bass's "Pop goes the Weasel".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm listener james from westwood:

Ya boosted the Softee, then ya looped it, ya looped it!
  1:09pm Paul b:

A few months ago I was trying to make a list of some quintessential elements of high summer - the smell of ice cream drippings on a hot sidewalk an hour after the truck has passed was one. Seems gross but one of the things that means summer to me. I was going to take that list and try to gin up some sort of rambling W.G. Sebald type essay with them. Still on the "to-do" list
  1:11pm Dean:

Best ice cream truck gag: Bugs Bunny episode at Valley Forge.
Avatar 1:12pm Mayuko:

Hello, Rickwaukee, rw, and northguineahills!

They'll use your cut-off fingers as ice cream toppings, too!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Jason - Good luck on your mission in China. Whatever time and place you can do some shows, that'd be great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm David D:

Hello again - back for more ice cream!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm David D:

(Or meat?)
Avatar 1:15pm northguineahills:

Apparently, a Glasgow theatre company put together a stage production of the life of Radiophonic pioneer, Daphne Oram, w/ live music done by Anneke Kampman. www.broadwayworld.com...
Avatar 1:16pm Mayuko:

Jason! I heard Doug saying yesterday that we'll have a new show on the drummer stream too but don't know who that is yet. Maybe you can come back filling in?!?!
Avatar 1:16pm fred:

I really like this Sujo track
Avatar 1:16pm northguineahills:

Me too!
Avatar 1:18pm fred:

I heard Doug say it was a comeback; I was really hoping it would be Jason
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm listener james from westwood:

Aside from the soft-serve, what did folks usually get from ice cream trucks as kids or older-than-kids? I tended to go for snow cones or those ice cream popsicles with the white and pink crumbled-up things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm listener james from westwood:

Mmmmm ... crumbled-up cookie things....
  1:19pm Rickwaukee:

I have this at 11
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm listener james from westwood:

@fred: Could be Kenzo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I wonder how many bands have "Milkshake" in their title.
Avatar 1:21pm northguineahills:

I was just about to suggest this Cibo Matto.
Avatar 1:22pm Mayuko:

@mdashkin Them ice cream trucks sure are aggressive!!!
I heard the ‘Pop Goes the Weasel’ truck for the first time in Sunset Park the other day, maybe their turf is not much in Queens. I should check who which mafia group that was next time I hear em.
  1:26pm Dean:

Still love that DJ Cummerbund mash-up "XXMilk" about milkshakes.
Avatar 1:26pm fred:

@james: that would be grand!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm David D:

New show? Kenzo? Rumors? I love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I remember Liz Berg would play ice cream truck chimes for her bed music. Probably when she airs her first show of the summer.
Avatar 1:28pm Jason Elbogen:

hey Mayuko--yep I told him I would fill in... But I'm still teaching Monday-Thursday Morning and Nights, so I don't have much flexibility. I was hoping to get a temporary regular slot in June--because I have a bunch of stuff I want to play--but I guess it's too complicated.
Avatar 1:30pm Mayuko:

@Jason Be my company on Saturdays!!!
Avatar 1:31pm northguineahills:

Well, in two weeks I finally have a face-to-face interview for hydrology/soil science environmental firm. I only applied for it in February and have had 3 phone interviews. It's actually a job I'd want to do in a place (Gainesville, FL) w/ low cost of living, a music/art scene, plenty of good restaurants, and I can actually bike to work if I so choose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm David D:

Good luck, ngh! Being able to bike would be a big plus for me as well.
  1:33pm Dean:

On my small Chromebook screen Tornadoes looks like Tomadoes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm doctorjazz:

Good luck NGH. Biking to work would be great (not possible in my situation, alas...)
Avatar 1:34pm northguineahills:

Everywhere else in Florida would require a 30-45 minute drive just to get anywhere.
  1:34pm Dean:

Hey, doctorjazz, Brain box arrived yesterday! Told my friends, who reported that there is a multi-disk Jane box in the works and a 15-disk(!!!) Novalis box.
Avatar 1:35pm fred:

@NGH: Nice to hear! I hope you get that job
Avatar 1:35pm northguineahills:

  1:35pm Dean:

Also, if I'd thought of it, I'd have bought the Brain box from amazon.de (although I don't like buying from Amazon). Price there is w-a-y down.
  1:39pm Rickwaukee:

Butter Pecan. I'm just sayin'.
Avatar 1:42pm Mayuko:

@Paul B I don't think that's gross. That's like a scene a little sad but happy mixed feeling which is exactly what summer feels like!
  1:43pm Dean:

Error M-a-ssage?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm tmoyo:

today's comment's board looks weirdly 3D. The white letters pop up and the black ones stay in the ground.

I remembered reading Rudy Rucker's sci-fi book "Software," which has a sinister Mister Softee truck run by some kind of artificial inteligent gang that kidnaps people and takes their software from the hardware brain. I don't remember the story so well but the human bodies are discarded, but their mind is sucked into the AI pool or something like that.
Avatar 1:43pm northguineahills:

Damn it Dean, beat me to it!
Avatar 1:44pm fred:

Jason, you should seize Mayuko's offer. She could do a third hour but almost never does. You could "fill-in" for that time while she's eating ice cream downstairs
Avatar 1:44pm Mayuko:

Good luck with the interview, northguineahills! May all the ice cream be with you! (not the trucks!)
Avatar 1:45pm Mayuko:

"Brain box delivered from amazon" sounds somewhat spooky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi Mayuko and everyone! Just got back from the Pittsburgh March for Truth. Beautiful crowd. Beautiful day. Now beautiful music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm David D:

This is an Error Message I can enjoy.
Avatar 1:45pm Mayuko:

Hola tmoyo san!! Thanks for tuning in!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm doctorjazz:

Read part of Jason's posted article (hard to read while you dog walk), read other stuff of a similar vein. We're all hopelessly addicted, sugar is in almost everything. Went on a "detox diet" 2 summers ago, made it through, but wound up back in my regular "poisons" little by little (caffeine was the last back... Recently, though there are articles on the health benefits of caffeine and chocolate)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm David D:

That's great, Doug! How many people do you think were there?
Avatar 1:46pm Mayuko:

DOUG!!! We can't wait for the mystery around this new/old show to be resolved!!
  1:49pm Dean:

Health benefits to beer. That's the article I'm waiting for.
Avatar 1:50pm Jason Elbogen:

Doug--would it be possible for me to follow Mayuko to do a three-hour slot for the next few Saturdays?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm doctorjazz:

Definitely health benefits to get wine and beer have been documented, enjoy (moderation is key, of course).
I did get my Brain Box from Amazon, haven't opened it yet...

Pittsburgh mayor is very cool, Doug... Waiting for some local stuff to happen here...
Avatar 1:53pm northguineahills:

I had an inkling suspicion that this was Michael Mayer...
Avatar 1:53pm northguineahills:

I'd be down w/ Jason doing Saturday afternoons....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm doctorjazz:

Jason on Saturday, that would be great!
Avatar 1:54pm Mayuko:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Doug Schulkind:

@David D
Hard to say. I'm guessing around 400.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Doug Schulkind:

I love our mayor. He is an old-school progressive.

Email me.
Avatar 1:57pm northguineahills:

oh, crap, it's almost two! Thanks Mayuko for an excellent afternoon of icy sonic delights!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Mayuko!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm David D:

Thanks for the excellent show and refreshments, Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm doctorjazz:

Weekends need more Drumming!!!!!
Avatar 2:00pm Jason Elbogen:

Mayuko--it's not specifically about 'ice-cream'. It's about sugar... But I think you're ok--you grew up in Japan, you probably consumed 1/10th the sugar I have over the course of my life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm doctorjazz:

Fun show, Mayuko, thanks!
  2:01pm Rickwaukee:

Avatar 2:04pm fred:

Thanks Mayuko! Now go get some ice cream, you deserve it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Gary:

Hey wait, I just missed it! Well, I'll check the archives in an hour ...
  2:05pm Dean:

I was hoping for something more along the lines of beer=panacea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm doctorjazz:

I've cream for all, on me (party at house)...
Avatar 2:06pm fred:

@Dean: that wouldn't be news, it's truth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm doctorjazz:

@Dean, you don't need me for that...
Avatar 2:07pm Mayuko:

Thanks all for listening, everyone! Hope to see you all next week.
