Hey, Annie! You may not feel so thankful once the show starts....

annie:

hehe, i'm looking forward to it...a slow day here in the neighborhood

Basement! Best place to be on a fireworks-heavy day!
Avatar 11:59am
Tony Coulter:

Heya, James! Very true -- that's where our cat will be cowering tonight.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:02pm
listener james from westwood:

Oof, this is such a bad time for a lot of pets. Humans too.
Avatar 12:03pm
Tony Coulter:

Today's playlist pic is a detail from the front cover of the Uncle Sam record now proudly bursting forth....
Avatar 12:03pm
annie:

dog biscuits and rescue remedy dripped onto them...

listener james from westwood:

Fresh back from Vietnam in 1968 or 69, my uncle, a Bronx resident, fled the fireworks-heavy streets of Castle Hill on the Fourth and did all-nighters on 42nd St's grindhouse circuit. Did so for years after.
Avatar 12:08pm
Tony Coulter:

As may be obvious, today's show will consist entirely of private-press/small-label rock LPs that have been lurking in my basement.
Avatar 12:13pm
Tony Coulter:

Even in Portland, it never seems to rain on the 4th of July. Bring on torrential rains, I say....
  12:24pm
Mark Williams:

Hi Tony and everyone. Got my swag yesterday, which was your premium. Not gotten through it yet, but the first third was tasty.
Avatar 12:25pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mark! Glad you're liking it so far .. and, of course, thanks for pledging!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:33pm

Er, topical?
Avatar 12:35pm
Tony Coulter:

Sax man toots....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
listener james from westwood:

This could've been a Cyndi Lauper song.
Avatar 12:44pm
Tony Coulter:

Seem to have a bit of a frog in my throat....
Avatar 12:45pm
Tony Coulter:

Not to play favorites or anything, but this Heresy record will be graduating to my upstairs record collection.
Avatar 12:49pm
Tony Coulter:

As will this Nexus. But I love all my records equally, even the deformed ones that must stay hidden in the basement.
  12:50pm
Dean:

This is not the Canadian Nexus with which I'm kinda familiar.
Avatar 12:51pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dean -- nope, it's not them. It's this thing: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 1:17pm
glenn:

aranj.
  1:18pm
Dean:

That lead-in applause makes me wonder: do you have any stand-up comedy records in the basement?
  1:18pm
Dean:

Henny Youngman or Steven Wright wannabes?
Avatar 1:19pm
Tony Coulter:

Yes! I have a bunch of comedy records down there.
Avatar 1:19pm
glenn:

this cracks me up. www.youtube.com...
Avatar 1:20pm
Tony Coulter:

The cover of this Offutt record is rather special: e.snmc.io...
  1:20pm
Dean:

One day you'll have to spin a track or two.
Avatar 1:20pm
Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Glenn. Next time I have an itch I'll wish I had that thing handy.....
  1:21pm
Dean:

Unintentional comedy, that cover.

Proto-Rush, this Ore.
Avatar 1:23pm
Tony Coulter:

Ore's vocalist is also a bit Ian Anderson-esque in spots.
  1:25pm
Dean:

As was...was it the Deric Langton last set?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
listener james from westwood:

Killer basement tracks so far!
Avatar 1:27pm
Tony Coulter:

Yep, Langton -- agreed re Anderson....
Avatar 1:27pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, James!!
Avatar 1:28pm
Tony Coulter:

This song, from a Portland group, is about a tattooed man being an outcast because of all his tattoos -- which is *hardly* the case here these days....
  1:30pm
Dean:

Sand: the pinnacle of arena rock. (Spanish pun.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, Uncle Tony!
Avatar 1:34pm
Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Commander Doug!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:39pm

Now I'm recalling the "Misfits of Science" series that hit the airwaves right around this release, featuring a just-after-the-"Dancing in the Dark"-video Courtney Cox.
Avatar 1:39pm
Tony Coulter:

Interesting! Don't know that series....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
listener james from westwood:

It was on for less than a season IIRC. A superhero series in all but name and spandex outfits.
Avatar 2:02pm
Tony Coulter:

Up next ... an XTC cover!
Avatar 2:03pm
Tony Coulter:

Up next, as in now.
  2:15pm
Carmichael:

Heya Holiday Tony!
Avatar 2:15pm
Tony Coulter:

Same to yerz, Carmichael!
  2:16pm
Dean:

Nick Gilder allusion?
Avatar 2:17pm
Tony Coulter:

The allusionist strikes....
Avatar 2:20pm
Tony Coulter:

Oddly, this Speed Limit song reminds me of Snakefinger....
Avatar 2:24pm
Tony Coulter:

I guess the update of this Rantz song would have to substitute smartphone for TV.
Avatar 2:25pm
Tony Coulter:

To think TVs once ruled the world....
Avatar 2:29pm
Tony Coulter:

Wish I could show you the band photo from this Session LP.....
Avatar 2:30pm

I remember Misfits of Science. I watched every episode when it came out. I was a yungun back then...
Avatar 2:31pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, hey, NGH!
  2:33pm
Dean:

There's an image out there, a thumbnail with a bad URL, unable to shorten.
  2:34pm
Dean:

B&W, a triangle with a member wearing a hat at the apex, the vocalist at the middle of the base flanked by the other two caballeros?
Avatar 2:35pm
Tony Coulter:

Yep, that's the pic.

"The Bad URLs" would make a good band name....
Avatar 2:38pm
Tony Coulter:

And here they are again. Their blond vocalist looks like a miniature Mae West....
Avatar 2:38pm
Soul Captain:

The Basement Blues was exceptional to this point
Avatar 2:39pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Soul Captain!
Avatar 2:40pm
Tony Coulter:

The track on now was written for some kind of cheapo horror movie (straight-to-video, I imagine).
Avatar 2:43pm
Tony Coulter:

"All I want to do is utter some evil lore"
  2:44pm

Eeyore - Ode to Pooh
