I have a request. A plea, really. Will someone PLEASE sign Alex Guthrie to a record contract so we can stop seeing the same American Family Insurance commercial with Jennifer Hudson over, and over, and over? Isn't there something WE can do? I'll buy his record, whatever it is, just so I don't have to hear/see than damn commercial again.

When I was a kid, Steely Dan was on the radio all the time. Tons of hits. Now on classic rock stations, you might hear "FM" (aka "No Static at All" -which was never on an album), or "Ricky don't lose that number", but that's about all

I never hated the Dan, but I never really loved loved them either - I think maybe because the songs pretty much always seemed to be at a sardonic distance, so I deferred to that and kept the same distance.

I think its cool that such amazingly sophisticated rock jazz ever became classic rock.

Our local classic rock station SUCKS. It NEVER plays b sides or deep cuts, only the obvious shit I am so completely fucking sick of. I have an almost physically violent reaction when I hear it.

@WN, aren't most of them like that? 100% agreed, boring commercial classic rock stations make me want to spew Niagara-level projectile vomit. This infinite rendition, OTOH, is hilarious. Anytime I get some crappy classic rock earworm, I'm going to infinit-ize it like that in my brain.

The Dan and Todd Rundgren are the two most divisive names in rock. There's a lot of people who think they're cool who hate them for some reason. I love them.

Calling the Dan impersonal or detached doesn't make sense to me. It's hard to think of any songwriters I have been more engaged with, or who said more. There's a lot of detachment on freeform radio.

The MGM/Verve label's Saturday 6pm "The Music Factory" premiered on WABC-FM June 24, 1967, where a Sunday show begun October had been successful for London Records ("London Phase Four Stereo Hour"). Tom Wilson resided at 361 Waverly Ave., Brooklyn. At year's end, Wilson formed indie production company Rasputin, which signed a deal with ABC Records to make Bagatelle and Fraternity of Man vinyl. Wilson's MGM association for the Mothers of Invention continued. The Music Factory with new hosts Bob and Ray would debut September 1968 and move to WNEW-FM. Print ad, February 1968:
