Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm joe mulligan:

new cars now have an arrow next to the gas pump icon in the dashboard so you know which side the cap is on
Avatar 6:14pm dale:

my first car had it behind the license plate in the middle - they should ALL be in the middle!

Driver's side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Lewis:

passenger side on my two most recent cars...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm chris:

japanese made cars tend to fill up on the left side and german made cars tend to have their fuel doors on their right side. in short, the general rule *should* have the fuel door off the roadway, if you're out of gas need a refuel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Lewis:

my cars were Japanese and German..

WHAAaaaAAA?? Ken has never seen "Ferris Bueller..." ?? It must play at some NY or Jersey summer movie nights every other year!
  6:20pm -max-:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm common:

I have no car. only a cat. it's on the left ear side.
Avatar 6:20pm dale:

my van and truck are both on the driver's side. my motorsickle has it in the center. lawnmower is on the left.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Nick the Bard:

HOLY CRAP, I"M GOING BLIND NOW (they just installed a GIANT red light in here for when there's a call coming in)
  6:20pm spaceman J:

Had an Oldsmobile in the 80s with it behind the rear license plat, therefore the middle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm People Like Us:

close your eyes Nick
Avatar 6:23pm Fredericks:

If the one's with the gas flaps on the passenger side are European, shouldn't the steering wheel also be on the passenger side?
Avatar 6:24pm Marcel M:

Wow... Andy is really doing it
Avatar 6:24pm Mr Mark:

Passenger side - Subaru. First car was a 73 Plymouth with it behind the license plate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Mutant:

Maybe it depends on which hemisphere you are in
  6:25pm tj:

next week andy should run the board solo
Avatar 6:25pm dale:

"behind the license plate" - SEE MELINDA - NOT SO WEIRD!!!!
Avatar 6:26pm Jeff:

Good cars have the filler on the passenger side (because it's marginally safer to have it on the opposite side from oncoming traffic).
Avatar 6:26pm Mr Mark:

Oh - seems like every car made in the last 20 years has a little arrow on the fuel gauge showing which side the gas fill up is on. So don't even need to remember that anymore
Avatar 6:27pm Jeff:

...and @Mr. Mark is correct, there's a hint on the dash.
Avatar 6:27pm BnowB:

Americans prefer left-mounted fuel doors, said Schirmer, referencing a Ford study. A driver’s-side fuel door makes it easier for drivers to place the car’s left fender close to fuel pump
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm melinda:

@dale I'm sorry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Nick the Bard:

this new light really is starting to hurt now :/
Avatar 6:28pm Fredericks:

In America you're supposed to keep right.
Avatar 6:29pm BnowB:

When its on the passenger side on parkway... i have less log jam at pumps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Nick the Bard:

maybe if it wasn't giant and RED, maybe blue or green?
Avatar 6:29pm Fredericks:

Put a towel over the light, Nick. Or a pretty scarf
Avatar 6:30pm dale:

it's okay melinda - it was a 1974 hornet. amc did not follow convention
Avatar 6:30pm BnowB:

Foregn cars more passenger... no doubt.. Subaru one the most reliable cars on the planet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Nick the Bard:

put my sunglasses on at least for now, it's kind of helping
Avatar 6:31pm BnowB:

I have a vw bug and audi both were mounted on passer side FRONT of car
Avatar 6:31pm BnowB:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Mutant:

Avatar 6:32pm Jeff:

I believe VWs and Audis do passenger side. Because they're well designed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm pinholga:

Even if a gas station had only one entrance, it wouldn't matter, because the pumps are always at an island away from the building. On approach, you decide to go to the left or the right.
Avatar 6:32pm Mr Mark:

Gas hoses are long enough to fill no matter which side the fuel door is on.
Avatar 6:32pm Jeff:

Oh, here:

Japanese (90%+ left): Japanese cars are consistent within their model lines and even parent companies. The rate of exceptions is probably under 10% of vehicles produced in a given time period.

Honda/Acura: Left
Toyota/Lexus: Left
Nissan: Left (right: 350Z/G35 and 370Z/G37)
Mazda: Left (Mazda3 right due to Ford influence)
Mitsubishi: Left
Subaru: Right

German: German automarkers tend to place the filler on the right, more consistently than American cars.

BMW: Right
Mercedes-Benz: Right
VW/Audi: Right

American: My knowledge of American cars is less, but they tend to be less consistent within their model lines and as a whole. Also, the relationship between parent companies is murkier.

Ford: Right (new Mustang is left, old Mustangs are right, Probe is left probably due to Mazda influence)
Chevrolet cars: Left.
Chevrolet Trucks/SUVs: Right
Dodge: Left (Viper is right)

Kia: Left
Hyundai: Left

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Nick the Bard:

of course it would get installed when it's a phone bank filler show, do it on a high concept show when it' sike, three people calling and one of them is cranky about the topic being stupid
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm mrdonutsu:

I think all Euro cars are on the passenger side.
Avatar 6:34pm dale:

my first pickup truck had the gas filler on the left - and the tank was behind the seat in the cab.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Do electric cars have arrows showing where the plug is at? Talking cars could tell you the location if you were to ask it.
Avatar 6:35pm Monica:

Lukoil is a Russian owned company. During a 2003 photo op, Chuck Schumer shared a Krispy Kreme with Vladimir Putin at the opening of the Lukoil gas station on 10th Ave. and 24th St. (since closed).
Avatar 6:35pm BnowB:

Germans probably sell the most cars... VW, Mercedes, Porsche, VW, Audi, Volvo
  6:36pm JakeGould:

This thing is still on the schedule?
Avatar 6:36pm BnowB:

tons of mitsubishis on the road
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm mrdonutsu:

Remember that in Japan they drive on the left, with the steering wheel on the right, so their left handed filler inlet is on the PASSENGER side there..
Avatar 6:37pm BnowB:

german also MINI cooper
Avatar 6:37pm BnowB:

ahh good point @mrdonutsu
Avatar 6:39pm BnowB:

The peoples car had the gas station above your feed. Head on accident with a full take of gas was an explosion.

Avatar 6:42pm dale:

CITGO is venezuela. they are always cheaper by a few cents.
Avatar 6:42pm BnowB:

shitty cars have it on the left.. hands down.. LMAO
Avatar 6:43pm Mr Mark:

Isn't it better to have it on the passenger side - so you don't hit your door on the gas pump when you get out to fill up?
Avatar 6:44pm BnowB:

YES MR Mark!
  6:45pm Henry Drudd:

Check this link out guys It'll tell you
Avatar 6:45pm Mr Mark:

but I'm in NJ so I never have to get out of my car to fill up - so I guess it really doesn't make a difference...
Avatar 6:45pm BnowB:

Avatar 6:51pm BnowB:

sean you cant call lol
Avatar 6:51pm BnowB:

gotta ask what kind of car!! lol
  6:52pm destabilizer:

Andy is right: Suppose gas tanks were always on the driver's side of the car. Drivers would then have to park on the right side of an open pump in order to fill their tanks. ... Putting fuel filler doors on different sides of different cars thus means that some cars can access pumps from the left.Aug 3, 2009
  6:52pm Sean d:

more Like I can't drive till January
Avatar 6:53pm dale:

sean d - sweet ride!
  6:54pm Henry Drudd:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Nick the Bard:

closing my eyes doesn't help :(
Avatar 6:56pm BnowB:

ONE car got a "it was the last car i drove' ??? BUZZER no
Avatar 6:56pm Jeff:

Drivers find it marginally more convenient to have it on the driver's side, but it's marginally safer to have it on the passenger side.

So which side a company chooses says something about which of those they prioritize.

It's unsurprising that paternalistic German engineers make the decision for the owner. After all, the manual for my German car explained how the climate-control system could be set for whatever temperature we might want... but then pointed out what the one truly CORRECT and RECOMMENDED temperature was.
Avatar 6:58pm BnowB:

its recommended based on when it auto turns on an off and its efficiency ... oh you said GERMAN.. nevermind
  7:06pm hstapinski:

I think I'm ready!
