I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Good afternoon Mayuko and all
Avatar 12:02pm
Mayuko:

Good afternoon, fred! Is it super cold in your neighborhood too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm
listener james from westwood:

Howdy, Mayuko, fred, and all Vertigo-go folks!
  12:04pm
rbrt:

I'm ready for the musical journey!, happy Saturday to all :D
Avatar 12:04pm
Mayuko:

Hi james! and rbrt! Happy Saturday to you too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm
fred:

Nope, rainy but mild. I like cold, so I'd rather have that
  12:06pm
rbrt:

I'm not ready for this cold weather :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
fred:

I think the Ideologic Organ label is somehow related to Stephen O'Malley; I've been to a few shows set up by this label and he would sometimes DJ at these
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm
listener james from westwood:

Wintry air did slam down late last week rather abruptly in the WFMU air-signal area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
fred:

Coincidentally, I just watched the documentary about Sakamoto that was posted on the station's twitter this week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
doctorjazz:

Hi all vertiginous folks. A bit under the weather just lying in bed and listening... Cool sounds.
  12:12pm
rbrt:

@fred I just watched something too about Sakamoto, maybe that's where it came from
  12:13pm
rbrt:

hey @doctorjazz feel better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm
fred:

@rbrt: it was called "Tokyo Melody", an hour long doc with more music than talk that might be more about Tokyo in the early '80s than Sakamoto. It featured a fairlight with its 8" discs
Avatar 12:18pm
Mayuko:

doctorjazz! I hope you feel better! I don't have music that's too crazy today and hopefully the show will be calming.
  12:20pm
rbrt:

@fred ahh ok, was something else, I will check this out, thanks!

Greetings Mayuko-san and friends. A calming show will be welcome right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
listener james from westwood:

@Mayuko, confirming that this show is indeed calming. Perfect sounds for psychology proofreading.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
doctorjazz:

Thanks, pretty crazy right nos if you ask me, but enjoying it.
Avatar 12:24pm
Mayuko:

I wanna watch that Ryuichi doc too! I've read about the 80's underground but haven't watched much moving image footages, that would be fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Mayuko and players. This from The Haters sounds a lot like operating a combine.

Hello, Mayuko, digital and analog sentient beings, the eared and earless.
Avatar 12:33pm
Mayuko:

Hallos, P-90! Hope everything is good with you!

james, I will add that "perfect for psychology proofreading" to my list of descriptions for this radio show and use it in the future!
So far I've only had "perfect soundtrack for assembling furniture" in the list. It was from Sam, the host of If You Lose Your Horse.
Avatar 12:34pm
Mayuko:

Halos, Ken, and Jesse! Welcome on board, Sem!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
fred:

@Mayuko: it's not about the underground at all, he doesn't seem to be connected to that. But there's a lot of footage of Tokyo at that time. And you won't have to rely on the subtitles, which are sometimes white on white and unreadable. I think he has some interesting takes on music, old-school but more than that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
tmoyo:

Hi everybody! loving this track.
Avatar 12:35pm
Mayuko:

@fred hm. I guess in the 80's he was already totally in the main stream, now that I think.

True Mayuko... and work schedule changes.. Always have the archives tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
fred:

The doc got me to remember how I first heard about him: I was in college, skipping a class to go to a big record store, and he was signing for the release of Beauty. I had never heard of him, but I bought the record and got it signed without hearing any of it. Only time I ever did such a thing, but it was either that or back to economy class. I guess I was very lucky
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
fred:

"vieux" is french for "old"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm

I was afraid Trump was going to visit that one controversial shrine in Japan. For all I know he did.

sad can be beautiful!, which is sad :/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm

Hoping the other news all last week besides Trump wasn't too overwhelming for you all. It just seemed to pile up exponentially and it's so easy to just keep refreshing social media for details and not step away for self-care.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
listener james from westwood:

@rbrt: If you happen to step out of the room during Bryce's shows, one can easily miss his brief breaks and imagine it's a droid doing the programming!
  1:04pm
rbrt:

lol @james
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
Ike:

@LJfW@1:00, exactly! I have to NOT spend hours reading hilarious angry Twitter rants about Drumpf's latest malfeasance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
doctorjazz:

The stream may not be directly programmed by "humans", but it is randomly selected music from Doug's hard drives, ultimately his sensibility is behind it (from what I understand). What can be bad?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
listener james from westwood:

So the stream is sort of a music-coded engram of Doug. This is a good thing to have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
doctorjazz:

It's scary, though, if everyone just accepts Drumph's comments as more noise and stupidity, he wins in a way. He's desensitized us, the bar for what is acceptable has dropped seriously, and he can get away with much more...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm
coelacanth∅:

hello Mayuko and all
  1:15pm
rbrt:

I like this track Poren
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
doctorjazz:

(imagine how much stuff is on those hard drives... I could probably move in there, if I could digitize...).
Great "bed music" Mayuko, (not in the usual FMU sense), thanks!
  1:15pm
rbrt:

hi coelacanth∅
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
listener james from westwood:

To the point where a marginally less horrible, more mentally focused but still far-right-wing Repub president would, by comparison, look better and thus still garner votes, while gaining the unearned "but at least he ain't Trump!" defense. (This is why impeachment and a President Pence is still a goddamn nightmare.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
fred:

@james: no puns without the real Doug though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
listener james from westwood:

@fred: That's what makes his show and Marathon co-hosting/playlist pop-ins so priceless! He's the master!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
listener james from westwood:

I feel like I should offer a chaser for mentioning Trump and Pence. Here's a goofy story from September when I rescued a squirrel in my building. (The squirrel makes it back out into the wild OK!)
twitter.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
doctorjazz:

True, Pence actually seems worse in almost every way; he'd likely be able to get much more of his right wing /Christian agenda implemented. The glaring difference, though, is that he is less likely to start a nuclear war.
Avatar 1:19pm
Mayuko:

I think Trump at least didn't visit that shrine that enshrines JP empire war criminals, as far as I know. Would have been the stupidest thing to do with this climate around North Korea. Though it's very difficult to pick which one of his actions is the stupidest.
Avatar 1:19pm
Mayuko:

Hallos, Ike, and coelacanth∅!! Welcome on board!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
listener james from westwood:

@Mayuko, his stupidity and boorishness are the most renewable resource since solar power.
  1:20pm
rbrt:

this another world track seems like it would be nice in a virtual world
  1:21pm
rbrt:

sorry I'm derailing the trump discussion lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
fred:

@doctorjazz: I'm not sure about that: religious zealots who are sure they'll get a reward in the afterlife have every incentive to push that button
Avatar 1:24pm
Mayuko:

@rbrt Ha! Now I wonder what it would be like to have VR program where you "enter" instead of tuning in?!?!?! And listen to music with curated landscape every week?!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
fred:

@rbrt: Orange Agency kinda brought it back on track
  1:25pm
rbrt:

@Mayuko that would be frickin amazing?!? lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
doctorjazz:

James, that's a great story. Nice job!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
fred:

I prefer radio's sound-only world. I can do something else, and sometimes I pause to take in what's going on more deeply. Radio doesn't demand my full attention. I think that's why it earns it so often
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
doctorjazz:

Hmmm, @Fred, watta choice, religious fanatic vs total lunatic...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
doctorjazz:

So In my bed listening (really milking this, aren't I), I started listening on a speaker, then on headphones. It's actually all really relaxing and restful over the speakers, overwhelming via my headphones. Back to the speakers... Enjoying it.
Avatar 1:33pm
Mayuko:

@fred that's true. Actually for that reason I started listening to audio books recently. So that I can still "read" books while working like a maniac.

Also maybe better leave room for listeners own imagination. I'm not a huge fan of VR in general though it is very interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
melinda:

hi all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm

Would definitely listen to another 2 hr of all-gamelan recordings.
  1:35pm
rbrt:

hi melinda
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm
listener james from westwood:

I know a small # of folks who are avidly watching virtual and augmented reality technology and believe it will be immense, but I wonder what the real tipping point to get folks into it will be. Many other forms of media consumption have a far smaller burden in terms of gear to buy and psychological compatibility (some folks cannot adapt to the head-mounted tech of VR for various psycho/biological reasons).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm
listener james from westwood:

And yet! The Pokémon Go surge last year was perhaps the biggest demo of augmented reality the world has yet seen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
doctorjazz:

I think it will need to find a more user friendly hardware than the current glasses version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
doctorjazz:

I used Pokémon Go with my daughter, never really got it (must be my age..).
Avatar 1:41pm
Mayuko:

@doctorjazz interesting! I can see how that gamelan track could be overwhelming on headphones, I guess it's the kind of music that's supposed to spread into space, not played right by your ears.
Avatar 1:42pm
Mayuko:

Good afternoon, melinda! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm
listener james from westwood:

That's right. It also doesn't help that one of the pioneers of that format (specifically Oculus Rift) is a pro-Trump creep who funded anti-Clinton Facebook propaganda. (Not to bring that jackass up again.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
doctorjazz:

Great show, Mayuko, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
coelacanth∅:

but...isn't "virtual reality" an oxymoron?

- and, i agree with fred (@1.23)
Avatar 1:48pm
Mayuko:

@doctorjazz Obviously the reality is so much richer in information than any algorithm, I'd just go birdwatching looking for rare birds rather than pokemon go but probably I'm from ancient time too.
  1:51pm
rbrt:

nature is amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
fred:

Someday, people will make something great out of VR. But now it's just a product. Let people take ownership of it. The Ken Freedman of VR might be out there planning to bore a sideways hole
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
doctorjazz:

Pokémon Go just managed to make the rest of the real world, parks and the like, into a video game, much less appealing than the real thing is...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
doctorjazz:

(on the other hand, it got my daughter walking in a park...).
Avatar 1:57pm
Mayuko:

If I remember correctly, Pokemon Go was modeled after bug catching kids used to do, makes sense many children love pokemon. Old play just with new technology.
