This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Welcome to the fruit market, explorers - there's a great variety in store for tonight!
Avatar 6:58pm hyde:

smells like durian in here
Avatar 6:59pm Flash Strap:

ah, the king of fruits!

hi Hyde!
Avatar 7:01pm hyde:

that don't touch me tomato cover is...something
Avatar 7:03pm hyde:

i will also say i had durian puffs at dim sum a couple of weeks back and they were pretty good
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

yikes, I know. Wait till you hear the tunes!
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

that does sound pretty good, i'd like to get in on those puffs
Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

this is a really weird record, i'm really into it at the moment
Avatar 7:05pm hyde:

these were them www.instagram.com... (yes i'm someone who takes photos of their food. i'm....sorry!)
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

it is okay to take pics of food when it looks like sci-fi food, obviously. those look amazing
  7:08pm zonk ludlow:

Evening Evan and fellow explorers. Just back from the market with mangoes in tow so all set. Hyde you are right about that album cover, it certainly is something!
Avatar 7:08pm hyde:

they were pretty good. not too sweet, which is how i like dessert. (also thru confession: my gf took that photo).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm doctorjazz:

Hey, explorers!
Avatar 7:09pm Flash Strap:

Zonk! Zonk with the bag of mangoes! Very glad to see you

And there's a doctor in the house! Welcome!
Avatar 7:10pm hyde:

ok, i have to shower. don't play anything good for ten minutes.
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

oh, it's all good tonight Hyde
Avatar 7:11pm hyde:

Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

this one's especially good
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Donald Duck in the house
Avatar 7:17pm geezerette:

Maracas from Caracas.
Ai Ai Ai, Evan! Hyde! Doc!
Avatar 7:18pm Flash Strap:

Geezerette! A more welcome personage one can scarcely imagine!
  7:20pm zonk ludlow:

Climaco Sarmiento Y Su Orquesta, wowzers.
Avatar 7:20pm northguineahills:

Loving the cumbia, wow, I actually have a version of this Cumbia Sampuesana I got in Mexico City.
Avatar 7:20pm northguineahills:

Wish, I was home rather then work.
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

yeah that's a great LP! can be found here, by the by: tamtammelodie.blogspot.com...
Avatar 7:22pm Flash Strap:

NGH! Welcome brother! I wish you were home too
Avatar 7:23pm northguineahills:

I think mine is on a 70s comp. My wife told me the more skantier clad the woman on the cumbia album, the better the music. She was right.
Avatar 7:25pm geezerette:

Gotta work, but happily listening.
Actually impossible to sit still, lines are gonna be shakey! :)
Avatar 7:29pm northguineahills:

Okay, I'm leaving work, but I'll catch the tail end of your set.
Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

catch ya at the tail NGH

Shaky lines can be quite good, G!
Avatar 7:41pm Flash Strap:

this track! is so good!
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

supposedly it goes back to the 1870s, and Zing was a stickfighter
Avatar 7:43pm Flash Strap:

this one, Barre-A-Oh, has similar roots in the 19th century or earlier
  7:44pm JtotheK:

Hi Flash, Explorers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm doctorjazz:

Love this stuff! The more distant, scratchy sounding, the better!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm doctorjazz:

Always reminds me of Irwin's show years back, when he had an hour feature every week, "Muriel's Treasure", that featured Calypso music.
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

Hi J_K!

@doc: I've never heard his show, but I'm definitely aware of its influence
Avatar 7:49pm Flash Strap:

i love this LP: auraljoy.blogspot.com...
  7:50pm zonk ludlow:

Recently traveled back through your archives and tuned into a couple of Calypso themed shows, now well and truly hooked. My ears have been in a happy place since today's show begun.
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

a very positive take on bebop here... will Young Tiger feel the same?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm doctorjazz:

Yup, these guys were into Bird and the Bebop bunch.
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

incredibly pleased to hear, Zonk! I love calypso like I love my life, and I aim to spread the word wherever possible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm doctorjazz:

Love the lyric on Calypso Be, talk about influence...
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

@Doc:it always cracks me up how conflicted Tiger comes off here
Avatar 7:53pm geezerette:

I'm a total sucker for real Calypso. Esp. Lord Kitchener, never heard this Bop / Calypso love affair before!!! :D
Avatar 7:54pm geezerette:

Love it!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm doctorjazz:

True, he really puts it down while quoting the bebop lines.
Avatar 7:55pm geezerette:

Lyrics so smart and funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm doctorjazz:

Diz is the real hero here, it seems.
Avatar 7:56pm geezerette:

absolutely, Doc!
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

@Doc: It's hilarious! sounds like he's still in denial about how much he can't help but love it

@G: right with ya!
Avatar 7:57pm hyde:

been background listening. missed the always welcome geezerette hello. hello!
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

love this guy's girl voice!
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

next one has a very important, extremely subtle subtext, fwiw
Avatar 8:00pm geezerette:

Dear Hyde! Good to see you too!
Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

jesus, Sparrow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm doctorjazz:

King Sparrow in High Fidelity, huh? Not exactly RCA Living Stereo, but better sounding than some (really fun to listen to, though).
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

This record is half spicy calypsos and half "rock and roll," which means tame ballads apparently
Avatar 8:03pm quinn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm melinda:

Hi folks!
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

Quinn! How are you friend?
Avatar 8:04pm quinn:

Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:06pm geezerette:

@ Quinn, congrats! How lovely. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm melinda:

Avatar 8:16pm hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm doctorjazz:

My time to commute, catch you later, great stuff, Flash, thanks!
Avatar 8:20pm Flash Strap:

Safe travels, Doc!

@Hyde: I wanted to, but honestly it's not that it's too dirty, it's just... nauseatingly weird
Avatar 8:23pm Flash Strap:

all this Indonesian stuff is from the overwhelming Madrotter's Treasure Hunt: madrotter-treasure-hunt.blogspot.com
Avatar 8:24pm quinn:

thanks, everybody! i'm glad he slept through all the dirty, dirty fruit innuendos.
Avatar 8:24pm Flash Strap:

this whole LP is so good, and whoo, that cover!
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

too young for tomato talk!
Avatar 8:25pm hyde:

@Flash haha, ok
Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

next song is about a papaya

@Hyde: you should check it out, get back to me. it's called "Mommy Out De Light"
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

love this guy's voice
Avatar 8:29pm geezerette:

it's all SO good.
Avatar 8:32pm Flash Strap:

@G: it's sort of a revelation!
Avatar 8:33pm jaywbabcock:

There cannot be too much calypso on this show. Thank you again Evan for making my favorite 3 hours of the week
Avatar 8:35pm Flash Strap:

Hello Jay! That's about as good a comment as a person can hope to get, so thank you

still working myself up to do that all-Sparrow, all-vinyl show I've been dreaming of
Avatar 8:36pm jaywbabcock:

YES ALL SPARROW !!! Would love that. btw, fwiw, i had NO IDEA that Van Dyke Parks had done all that calypso stuff until I heard your show. THANK YOU
Avatar 8:37pm Flash Strap:

there's a Sucu Sucu version from every country in the world it seems
Avatar 8:38pm Flash Strap:

That VDP album is maybe my favorite US release of all time! definitely opened my ears to Calypso For Real. My GREAT pleasure, the greatest pleasure!!
Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

these harmonies!
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

@J again: that was one of my favorite shows to do, I'm really beyond glad you enjoyed it
Avatar 8:42pm jaywbabcock:

And if I may —>> folk may be interested in checking out 'City of Bohane' by Kevin Barry! Utterly weird/beautiful/suspenseful SF novel set in future Irish gangster city smitten with... VINTAGE CALYPSO. Incredible patois, and a suspenseful story, in a fantastic setting
Avatar 8:42pm Flash Strap:

that sounds amazing
Avatar 8:43pm jaywbabcock:

Evan what you've created here is the best Social Pleasure Club on WFMU
Avatar 8:43pm geezerette:

Gorgeous. Evan, you create a world a week!
Avatar 8:45pm Flash Strap:

you're too kind! I do my best
Avatar 8:48pm Flash Strap:

god damn this is a pretty tune
Avatar 8:49pm geezerette:

Jay, we're homesteaders too!
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

what does that entail?
Avatar 8:55pm jaywbabcock:

@geezerette Right on. I don't want to exaggerate it... we live in a a converted homesteader cabin (that is: a structure built on a property granted to previous owners by the govt for $50 thru the Hometead Act/Small Tracts Act)... we've got power and water and so on. But yeah. We're on five acres in the Joshua Tree desert. And we have other cabins that we rent out. Where you at???
Avatar 8:56pm Little Danny:

Aye, Flash, running so late but this playlist looks amazing!
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

Hi LD!
Avatar 9:02pm geezerette:

I wouldn't even know what to call it but we do have a small cabin not far from Park. Time really stretches out there doesn't it. :)
Avatar 9:08pm Flash Strap:

The sea when it breaks on the beach
It's beautiful, it's beautiful the sea.
Fisherman when he leaves
Never know if you're coming back
Do not even know if
How many people lost
Your Husbands Your Children
In the waves of the sea
The sea when it breaks on the beach
It's beautiful, it's beautiful.

Pedro lived off fishing
Get out on the boat
Six o'clock in the afternoon
It was only in the sunshine time
Everyone liked Pedro
And more than all
Rosinha de Chica
The cutest
It's really cool
Of all the young lady
From Arraia

Peter left on his boat
Six o'clock in the afternoon
Spent all night
Did not come in the sunshine
They gave with Pedro's body
Played on the beach
Gnawed by fish
No boat with nothing
In a corner far away
From Arraia

Poor Little Girl Rosette
That was beautiful
Now it seems
What a pity
Lives on the beach
Looking at the waves
Walking around
Saying softly:
"He died, died, died, oh ..."
The sea when it breaks on the beach
Avatar 9:10pm Flash Strap:

this whole album is just absurdly lovely and sun dappled

Really like these Delora Buenos
Avatar 9:30pm hyde:

haven't commented lately, but let's just say that this has been a good soundtrack for me and my nice, young roommate to engage in carping about the crazy person who rented us rooms
Avatar 9:32pm Flash Strap:

wonderful! anything to alleviate the plight of the tenant
Avatar 9:35pm hyde:

thankfully i'm only here for two more weeks! but the woman who onws this place is a, well, let's just say i wish i had icons for a screw and a ball
Avatar 9:35pm Flash Strap:

man I like that Delora Bueno so much I think I'm going to add another to the set at the end... it's a good one, it's about a sleepy donkey
Avatar 9:35pm northguineahills:

Gee, when live alone, you spend so much more time cleaning. Will be around, just not at the keyboard.
