Avatar 5:06pm

ßrian: theres around 1% of the flats in leipzig which only have those old "berlin" ovens, which can only be heated with coal...but 10 years ago there were a lot more...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
David D:

Only 1%? Smells like more - and I even kind of like the smell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
kuba:

agree on the smell. like winter in poland
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
kuba:

(speaking of diacritics...)
Avatar 5:09pm

the smell was overwhelming in 1995, when i moved here...its a smell of winter and sad poetry by authors like adolf endler...or something...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm
David D:

Yeah, kind of nostalgic, but then again I had one of those ovens for a couple of years myself.
Avatar 5:11pm
hilmar:

i am not using it for romantic reasons...actually i think heating with coal aint such a good thing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm

Speaking of coal country - this sounds like we're in Appalachia :)
Avatar 5:13pm
northguineahills:

It's weird, it gets down to 13C here in Gainesville, FL, and I start to smell wood burning (I live in what passes for a an older neighborhood (Victorian-WWII), so there is a lot of wood burning fireplaces. I'm only used to smelling it when it's way below freezing in the winter when I used to visit relatives in West Virginia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm
David D:

13C sounds nice right about now!
Avatar 5:15pm
hilmar:

when i was posting, that i didnt like to go down to fetch some coal..i was thinking of a certain basement used by the ramones... the basement song in 20 century pop...haha
Avatar 5:19pm
northguineahills:

That's been low around here, but it usually gets up around 27C (although the morning after Halloween it got down to 4C, which is really cold around here, especially that early.

redkayak: A lot of new lakes have been created here in the Leipzig area from defunct strip mining locations.
Avatar 🚂 5:27pm

@David - Interesting. The scars from those years will be long in healing. Good for fossils though :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm

They have ironically added much to the quality of life here - after destroying so much in the past, including several villages that were entirely razed for coal mining.
