absolutely. when i worked in cubeville, usa, i would always wear headphones at my desk. often, people would come to ask me something and end up spending a few minutes behind me, trying to get my attention. hehehehe
Avatar 1:10pm Chris from DC:

I was in school in New Brunswick about the time the Smithereens hit and have a real soft spot for them.
Avatar 1:11pm Cheri Pi:

I grew up with Smithereens on my radio
Avatar 1:12pm Diane Kamikaze:

He just has one of the softest/loudest/richest voice in rock. So sad.
Avatar 1:12pm Diane Kamikaze:

urp. Voices...
  1:12pm Chapelhillian:

First i am hearing the news - "Beauty and Sadness" would be apropos now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm coe:

DK I think part of that Smithereens/NJ pride comes from the fact that they flaunted the fact that they were from NJ from day one. Never we are from the NY or Philly area we are from NJ.
Avatar 1:13pm V Priceless:

gonna really miss that mile-wide smile of his, and all those wise-ass cracks, too. Fabulous human.
  1:14pm Chapelhillian:

The guitarist in Smithereens used to have a record store in New Brunswick in the mid-80s just when they were having their first success. I used to talk to him about the band everytime I stopped by
Avatar 1:14pm Chris from DC:

Flaming Groovies, which became Captain Video I think?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Stevel:

Blood and Roses (and about every Smithereens song I've heard) has it all. Laid back, driving baseline, killer guitars, brutal mood shifts. Good work, well done.
Avatar 1:18pm V Priceless:

just a brilliant tunesmith. really one of the greats.
  1:19pm r i s k y:

Wow, love this track - I can relate big time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm coe:

I had such a hard time seeing The Smithereens. It was like an on going joke. I had friends who didn't like them and had seen them multiple times. FINALLY about 2 years ago I saw them play at a WNTI festival.
  1:22pm Chapelhillian:

Thanks for spinning Beauty and Sadness, Diane. It was the first Smithereens record I bought (an extended 12") and when the needle got to the end I would play it again and again
Avatar 1:22pm Diane Kamikaze:

And I've read accounts of them covering all types of music that you wouldn't expect. The whole band was so versatile, and Pat's vocals could just go anywhere and envelop you, from Black Sabbath to the Beatles.
  1:24pm tonyb:

Thanks for "beauty & sadness", Diane. I feel it's Pat's masterpiece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm coe:

I know you mentinoed the Black Sabbath story that is one of my favorites. I had always wondered until I heard that if it was just a freakish coincidence
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm joe:

The one and only time I went to Vegas I stayed at the LV Hilton across the street was Pat's show but he was out of town for the days we were there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm chris:

corruption knows no bounds in the current us administration. in spite of millions of pro net neutrality comments from citizens, the orange nazi's fcc just voted to kill net neutrality. thus, the net in the us now belongs to corporate media giants. fuck the fcc.

Avatar 2:27pm Diane Kamikaze:

@Dennis, Pat was such a huge talent and we are happy to have been able to call him NJ's own. I hope that you guys are doing OK and that there is some comfort for you and Pat's family because I see many, many people reaching out -still such a shock. He was on the air with me a couple of years ago, but I didn't want to replay the interview yet - I will... Vocal tracks are great, but I couldn't bring myself to play a conversation.... Much love to you!

Avatar 2:47pm Diane Kamikaze:

@herb.nyc, this record Angel Rat is very rock, as is Outer Limits, they have a lot more thrash on War and Pain and Killing Technology and ROAR, then get more prog into Nothingface and Dimension Hatross (prog for a thrash band, certainly not regular prog). Phobos and Negatron have a little more mechanical sounds - not quite industrial, but closing in on the realm. There's more, but those are the best defined records...
Avatar 2:48pm Wild Neil:

@Dean-THAT is a very good point!
