Heya, @Scraps! What's good?

that picture is crazy! do you know where that is Sam? did you notice there's no inner hand rail on those stairs? do you think my horse is in there? (gasping?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm

{...do you see the person looking out?}
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
Sam Segal:

The photo was taken by Wayne Sorce in Chicago in 1975. Not sure where in Chicago though. I'd recommend contacting Mr. Sorce regarding your horse. Seems entirely possible that the poor thing could be lost in there still.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm

Wait, where is the person looking out? This feels like Where's Waldo!

This is so african-guitar music

Hey, @SBP! Speaking of Whitney Houston...I just found out that one of her first singles was a guest vocal feature on a Bill Laswell and Archie Shepp joint by Laswell's Material group. Did everyone but me know that already? Seemed to insane to be true.

She must have been younger than young at the time?

Woulda been fun to drive neighbors a little crazy every so often by getting a couple friends and going up and down the three curly ways -- one on each -- singing "I Love You More Today Than Yesterday."

Junior Byles is so criminally unsung. several of my most favorite reggae songs are his.

The tone of the keyboard in that JB tune is what got me.

Do you listen to Aphex Twin?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
coelacanth∅:

Sam, one of the worst songs to be heard on wfmu...and many of the "likes" are pretend beings and multi-profile beings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Sam Segal:

Oh, I am quite familiar with Matt's sick prank. I'd totally forgotten that was an option...I wonder how many it's wracked up...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm

@Gilly: Yes, most definitely. Aphex Twin was one of the first electronic acts I ever got into.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
coelacanth∅:

12_?, 13_?... but yeah, it's joke.
sadly but humorously, his brainwashing has resulted in many listeners actually liking it and being quite defensive of it!
Avatar 10:47pm
northguineahills:

Aphex Twin was the first electronic music w/ rhythm in it I ever listened to (as Polygon Window) and liked. That opened a hell of a gateway for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
coelacanth∅:

wfmu listeners are sheeple too. if a dj plays it, they'll decide they like it. it's become cool to like it, whatever "it" is.
...(one listener once posted that he likes all the music wfmu plays. sad but true.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Sam Segal:

Hmmmm...my belief is that no music is cool and all music is good.
Avatar 10:58pm
northguineahills:

I'm very close to that sentiment, Sam, but I believe there is terrible music.

Gilly Siegel:

Goodnighteth, Friends of the vast interweb radio Omniverse, have a good jam.
Avatar 11:01pm
northguineahills:

TBH, coel, I like Heavy Metal non-ironically before Matt was even on the air. It might help that I wasn't musically aware when it came out, but sometime, almost 20 years ago, I went through a classic rock stage. I even dj'ed classic rock (even at Tonic). As Dj Olive told me, I'm appropriately inappropriate, but genuinely like everything I play/like (something I like about UM).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
coelacanth∅:

Sam, i agree with part one! part 2? well when music is made for the sole purpose of getting rich or getting "bitches" and it also happens to be made by someone with no singing or musical talent; and it incites anxiety and aggression in people - i don't think it's good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm

i wouldn't tell you"(takin' a ride)" isn't good...even though i think it's contrived and ill-informed. (along the lines of peter paul & mary singing "i dig rock and roll music") it still has some good things about it. i think..!

(and I’m microwaving Trader Joe’s Lamb Vindaloo — the nearest I can get to Indian food in Snohomish County, Washington)
  11:23pm
Dean:

Scraps, You can do Indian food on your own with produce from TJs. Chicken/curry/ginger/garlic/broth/rice/peas/potatoes/cinnamon/nutmeg...trust me, it's good.
Avatar 11:28pm
Scraps:

I do that occasionally. But it’s hard to cook one-handed (my right side is paralyzed)
Avatar 11:32pm
Scraps:

(and it’s hard to keep the kitchen equipped, and hard to keep up basic foodstuffs..... it’s much easier to “cook” instantly, I’m afraid. I miss cooking, but this way I have more time listening to music!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Sam Segal:

Scraps, estimating conservatively, I have probably eaten 59,000 TJ's Lamb Vindaloos in my life. Big fan over here!
  11:37pm
Dean:

Got it. Yeah, one-handed is another level.
Avatar 11:40pm
Scraps:

When I lived in New York, I estimate one-third of my cuisine was Indian. And vindaloo was hands-down my favorite.

Trader Joe’s is actually okay, for a microwave. Tasty. Not hot enough, but I knew that going in (sigh...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
coelacanth∅:

big fan of tj's frozen palak paneer. and the fish korma is not bad. (better than expected with low expectations) the sauce is very good. the fish, though okay, kind of detracts from it.

I like to cook, and I do so often. My 90YO mother, who once loved to cook, isn't quite able to do so anymore. I try to supply her with TJ frozen and fresh dishes, e.g., beef Bourgoinone.
Avatar 11:44pm

@Dean: yeah. :-) I didn’t know how many things that were much harder to impossible one-handed. Chopping, just to take one simple one.

Tying a knot: pretty much impossible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
coelacanth∅:

i don't eat lamb, but i wish to taste vindaloo, because someone who meant a whole lot to me's surname was (not spelled, but pronounced correctly as) "vindaloo".
  11:47pm
Dean:

Vindaloo isn't necessarily lamb, though that's one of the best. I think it means simply "very very hot." You could do a chicken or pork vindaloo, too.
  11:49pm
Dean:

I recall dining at an Indian restaurant, west side Los Angeles, where I was asked how hot I wanted my dish. I was offered an 11--pre-Spinal Tap, mind you--and I accepted. It was HEAVEN.
Avatar 11:49pm
Scraps:

Yeah, for some reason, Lamb Vindaloo rules the roost, but you can make any meat vindaloo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
coelacanth∅:

-not that i like the idea of you risking getting injured by a knife; but i'm imagining some kind of cutting board with clips on it of different sizes and tensions -so you could shove a veggie or whatever under the edge of the clip to hold it so you could chop it.
  11:51pm
Dean:

1976, first trip to London, rain was dumping as we arrived at the hotel. We headed out to a restaurant for a badly needed meal before bed. Indian. I had Saag Ghost, i.e., lamb with spinach and curry. My first taste of Indian. Glorious.
Avatar 11:55pm

coel, there are contraptions for one-handed people in the kitchen, and I have some of them. Mostly they’re expensive, but sometimes they turn a job from impossible to doable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm

@11.47 that's good to know...though i don't eat any flesh except fish. i can get creative with traditional recipes. i love to cook and i've taught myself how to make much more healthful versions of traditionally unhealthful dishes taste just as good.
