James Brown at the Apollo is the perfect present-wrapping album. You need that steady rhythm to get into the measuring, cutting, taping groove.

Hello yall. Please excuse late arrival. I was listening to (the late) Phil Austin's Roller Maidens From Outer Space -- the lost Firesign Theatre album. So good.
  4:11am

Merry Christmas, Jay! Stay tuned for a very special Christmas morning guest!

It snows in western Washington about twice a winter (except in the mountains). Sometimes not at all.

YouTube has videos of the Santa Claus Lane Parade (on Hollywood Blvd)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38am

Merry Christmas, can I play with your poodle?
  4:38am
markr:

I'm sure that's interesting, Simon.
  4:40am
markr:

The parade I mean, not the poodle. (Interestingly enough, I have a standard poodle listening to the show at home, along with his brother, a Bichon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40am
Sem:

I imagine Burl as Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof singing this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41am
pacific standard simon:

You don't want to get under the mistletoe with Burl, in these days.
  4:42am
markr:

Like that image, Sem. My friend dubbed in his dialog from that movie over that animated special with the Burl Ives snowman--was that "Frosty"? It was pretty great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45am
Sem:

Oh, the mendacity. Inspired over-dub, gotta say.
  4:47am
markr:

Judging by the response on Facebook, he and I seemed to be the only two who "got" it! You'd make three. I thought it was hilarious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47am

Ho hum, the mistle-thumb.

@PSS: Frunabulax!!!
  4:54am
markr:

I put on WFMU at low but listenable volume for them in the room where they sleep--it's sort of our office, where we've got our computer etc. They get to hear Jeff Conklin for an hour or so, then me, then a little of the morning show. It's Todd-o-phonic Todd this morning, by the way.
  4:55am
markr:

Every once in a while I'll be reminded about how fucking good McCoy Tyner was.

pound for pound
Jimmy Reed is the best deal in town
  5:04am
markr:

I kind of tend to agree, Miles. "I'm Jimmy Reed" was the first blues album that was actually conceived as an album. Prior to this record, they'd all been collections of singles, i.e. "The Best of Muddy Waters." (Not that those albums weren't great.) But for this album, he actually went in and cut 12 tracks for an album.
  5:09am
miles:

he's a revelation . I have about 20 of his singles & they all pop
  5:10am
miles:

now I've heard that there are multiple Sonny Boy Williamseseses
  5:11am
miles:

but wow cool Santa Claus song
  5:20am
markr:

It's true--the guy we heard tonight was sometimes called Sonny Boy Williamson II--there was another Sonny Boy Williamson before him (who wrote "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl"). THIS Sonny Boy recorded for Chess in the 50s and early 60s and also toured England with the Yardbirds as his backing band in the 60s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33am
pacific standard simon:

"Accidentally"? The official story is that he was playing Russian roulette, and lost.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35am
Sem:

@pps: just been reading the wikithingy entry for Johnny Ace, Big Mama Thorton, present at the event, had a different story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36am
Sem:

*pss*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40am
pacific standard simon:

Huh. So we went via the Terry Kath method?
  5:40am
markr:

Anyway, he's dead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45am
pacific standard simon:

Why does a deliberate death wish sound better to me than drunken stupidity.?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49am
pacific standard simon:

The current song title, "Santa Claus Got Stuck in My" reads like an old Playboy cartoon caption.
  5:52am
markr:

I know, I fixed it--this is a family show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54am
pacific standard simon:

I've been watching a lot of old 77 Sunset Strip shows on the old people channels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55am

He was awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56am
Sem:

Been fun, Mark. thanks, and see you again next time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58am

When the little girl knocked down the snowmen, that was the most depressing part of that movie.
  6:00am
markr:

Thanks everyone, have a Merry Christmas!
