This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hola, explorers!
Avatar 8:03pm
Scraps:

oh dear, though:

"Apparently, the Clothilde EPs represent a really dark time for the woman behind them, known as Élisabeth Beauvais. She was simply a sensitive teenage girl that was shanghaied into singing experimental pop songs with twisted and dark lyrics (that she totally objected to) against her will. She was forced to wear whatever nasty clothing her producer gave her and project an odd, unpleasant image to the world. She had no freedom and no say in any aspect of the Clothilde project, being forced to sing, mannerise, and act exactly how her producer told her to. Her friends and classmates made fun of her, her fellow chanteuses rejected her. The poor girl didn't want any part of it - she just desperately wanted to obey her mother, celebrity Gisèle Parry, who just wished for her daughter to have her own stab at fame. She felt manipulated by her label and alienated from her own music and became very depressed and scared. She hid herself and ran away until the label gave up trying to track her down. The whole ordeal ended up totally ruining her life; she had always wanted to be an actress, but whenever she even thought about it, she would have flashbacks from her time as Clothilde and simply freeze up. It is the heartbreaking story of a poor girl manipulated into doing something she wanted no part of. It is the very definition of evil, soulless major-label music."

Flash Strap:

lyrics to this song may provide some balm: I live in the wind
My body is a flame
I show teeth
Flowers and gendarmes

The sun follows me
I do not know God
The world is my bed
The wind blows where I want

Like a chimera
Like a drunk animal
My moto-panther
Trembling between my knees

And you, Blanch 'Neige
Poor dove
With your sweet figure
You Blanch 'Snow
Big dove
Return to your jams

Black leather boots
I am the woman fire
The jaguar woman
Ceremonial neck

My fingers are as much
Mobile syringes
My arms snakes
Long, fragile snakes

My kidneys are iron
And my satin belly
My thighs in the air
Play like dolphins

You Blanch 'Snow
Young rumbiere
With your rosy mouth
You Blanch 'Snow
Pretty meme
Go make pies with currants

I like sometimes
The pale and hot twinks
Who are melting on me
Comm 'eagle on the lamb

I like brutal
Large brass necks
Who keeps a hat
To confuse me

When it's finished
They lie like old men
A little dislocated
Blue lakes under the eyes

And you Snow White
Cute white
Sensual as a mummy
You Snow White
Tender bobonne
So go blow your husband

this (We Like It So) is a pretty politically significant work for Sparrow: if I understand it correctly, he comes out here in support of the Trinidadian political party ONR, despite being a lifelong vocal supporter of the PNM
Avatar 8:33pm
Flash Strap:

@Doug: there's a light dusting down here in NC, and we've got cancellations all over!
Avatar 8:35pm
Flash Strap:

This coming after he took about a decade off from political songs due to disillusionment with Solomon of the PNM, though I confess the intricacies of all this elude me entirely. I don't think the ONR faired well, ultimately, but it was a sort of left challenge to the dominant liberal party and Sparrow's alignment with it is remarkable in this context

(I think)

...it seems to me the creator of clothilde is fairly innocent and fairly brilliant, and it's thanks to Elizabeth's asshole mother, and maybe Elizabeth's own lack of clarity with herself and communication with him, that he may not have even known how Elizabeth objected to being clothilde.
if he'd have known he might've waited to find someone who knew and agreed with his objective.

High school history class, c. 1975, we played the 7" of "One Bad Apple" on the turntable in the back of class at 33 1/3 right in the middle of a lecture. Teacher liked us, so it was cool.
