Hello, David, Stanley.

Love these sixties African recordings sounding like they were made in the twenties.

Visited Havana one time and the hotel/nightclub was strictly from 1954. Big stage show, showgirls, and endless production numbers featuring all the period-correct accouterments. This piece is reminding me...

A bit of Cuban sun sounds good just about now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm

Sem, I'm there, rum in hand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
Sem:

When Bacardi left, the government changed the label to say HAVANA CLUB. Nothing else changed, same people making the spirit...oh, they changed the price, some. Tourist price? $3 a quart. This was Cuba in the 80's.

David, sometime ago I flew KLM and on the in-flight entertainment was a Dutch produced documentary on the salsa music scene in New York. It was amazing. I have never found it since on the internet etc. Do you, by chance, know of it?

Two delicate flowers of Southern womanhood were conversing on the porch swing of a large white-pillared mansion. The first woman said, "When my first child was born, my husband built this beautiful mansion for me."

The second woman commented, "Well, isn’t that nice."

The first woman continued "When my second child was born, my husband bought me that fine Cadillac automobile you see parked in the drive."

Again, the second woman commented, "Well, isn’t that nice."

The first woman boasted "Then, when my third child was born, my husband bought me this exquisite diamond bracelet."

Yet again, the second woman commented "Well, isn’t that nice."

The first woman then asked her companion, "What did your husband buy for you when you had your first child?"

The second woman replied "My husband sent me to charm school."

"Charm school!" the first woman cried "land sakes, child, what on Earth for?"

The second woman responded, "So that instead of saying ‘who gives a flying fuck, I learned to say, ‘Well, isn’t that nice’."

Welcome back Doc!

David D:

I have yet to adopt another team, though, so I guess it will probably never happen.
Avatar 6:22pm
northguineahills:

I saw the Cosmos in 1982 in Jacksonville when I was 6. My team played a mini-game during halftime. (I also got to represent the US at the U-14 championships in Japan in 1989. We finished 19 out of 21! (we beat the USSR 2-1, lost to Brazil 16-0, Argentina 14-1, Japan 7-2, and Sweden 5-1. But we got a football clinic from the Brazilian senior team, I will never forget that!
Avatar 6:26pm
northguineahills:

The Soviet keeper was a badass, but that game was the only pride we scrapped together in that tourney.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm
David D:

Wow, that is amazing! Are there any videos of the games?
Avatar 6:32pm
northguineahills:

My parents might have some if they still exist on VHS (outside of the USSR game, it was a really a humiliating affair). I still have the uniform in their attic somewhere.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm
Brian in UK:

Did you play against Ronaldo?
Avatar 6:36pm
northguineahills:

Yeah,, those scores are tattooed into my brain, as I knew I'd probably never be on such a stage ever again (it was before the USSF got their shit together. They showed up w/ just 15 players, and needed another 8. I made the tryouts [I was living in Japan at the time] and somehow made the starting 11 as sweeper)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
David D:

That is just incredible, NGH. Must have been like a dream.
Avatar 6:39pm
northguineahills:

I always thought that Ronaldo may have been on the Brazilian team, as he was my age, but I honestly don't know. I just remember the Brazilian keeper had a mustache (U-14). I do remember the players from the Brazilian senior team (who were there to play the Japanese senior team.
Avatar 6:41pm
northguineahills:

Of course, I didn't hear of Ronaldo until 5 years later at the USA WC '94.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm

I guess interest in the WC will unfortunately be down in the US this year.

@Brian in UK. I've watched every WC game since the US broadcast every game in '98. That just means more bar room for me. (I used to sleep in Thompkins Sq Park in b/tn games in 2002 around 4am, and get to grad school at 10am). I fell asleep that year during the second half w/ friends at his apt as we are were just so wiped out from watching every game. I'm not going to stop watching now!

The WC '98 final, I was driving back from a rave in Miami (and all of the chemicals that came w/ that experience), decided to pull off I-95, found an Irish bar, asked if they were showing the final. They said yes. Took a nap on Jupiter Beach, came in to watch the game, and the owner was so surprised a yank would make so much effort to watch it, he gave me a free meal and a free pint. Vive La France!
