Hooray!
Avatar 4:04pm Sem:

Trumpet esta muy bueno, especially in French.
Hello, David, Stanley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Stanley:

Love these sixties African recordings sounding like they were made in the twenties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm David D:

Greetings Stanley and Sem!
Avatar 4:05pm Sem:

I am trying to imagine the sombreros these fellas must be wearing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Stanley:

Hi David, Sem, others yet to arrive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm David D:

And greetings to all listeners and readers of the playlist!
Avatar 4:09pm Sem:

Visited Havana one time and the hotel/nightclub was strictly from 1954. Big stage show, showgirls, and endless production numbers featuring all the period-correct accouterments. This piece is reminding me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm David D:

A bit of Cuban sun sounds good just about now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Stanley:

Sem, I'm there, rum in hand.
Avatar 4:15pm Sem:

When Bacardi left, the government changed the label to say HAVANA CLUB. Nothing else changed, same people making the spirit...oh, they changed the price, some. Tourist price? $3 a quart. This was Cuba in the 80's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm doctorjazz:

Hi all, busy, but checking in. (Hallelujah in Yiddish?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm David D:

Hello Doctorjazz - yes, indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Stanley:

David, sometime ago I flew KLM and on the in-flight entertainment was a Dutch produced documentary on the salsa music scene in New York. It was amazing. I have never found it since on the internet etc. Do you, by chance, know of it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Stanley:

Yiddish! Ha I thought he was singing in Dutch!
Avatar 4:20pm Brian in UK:

What ho David and chums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Parq:

That's it, I'm changing the name of my autobiography to "Hallelujah in Yiddish".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Stanley:

Good evening Sir Brian.
Avatar 4:22pm Sem:

How are you now, BiUK? (local greeting)
Avatar 4:24pm Brian in UK:

Doing well thanks. I hear Edwin Hawkins has passed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm David D:

Hey there Brian and Parq!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm David D:

Sorry to hear that Brian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm David D:

Stanley: Don't know the film off-hand, does sound like something worth looking for...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Stanley:

I'll track it down, eventually.
Avatar 4:34pm Brian in UK:

Stanley I saw a good doc on Salsa maybe four years ago . Perhaps BBC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Stanley:

Yeah saw it, that was a four part series on BBC 4. Really good stuff.
Avatar 4:49pm Brian in UK:

Williams Burroughs has had a hand in group names
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm David D:

Brian: As did Lars von Trier.
Avatar 4:57pm Brian in UK:

David have you ever ventured out to the Bialowiecza Forest east of Warsaw on the Polish/Belarus? border.
Avatar 5:03pm glenn:

who wants a joke?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm David D:

No, I haven't Brian, although I've been a bit south of there. Have you been out that way?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm David D:

Sure, Glenn!
Avatar 5:04pm glenn:

Two delicate flowers of Southern womanhood were conversing on the porch swing of a large white-pillared mansion. The first woman said, "When my first child was born, my husband built this beautiful mansion for me."

The second woman commented, "Well, isn’t that nice."

The first woman continued "When my second child was born, my husband bought me that fine Cadillac automobile you see parked in the drive."

Again, the second woman commented, "Well, isn’t that nice."

The first woman boasted "Then, when my third child was born, my husband bought me this exquisite diamond bracelet."

Yet again, the second woman commented "Well, isn’t that nice."

The first woman then asked her companion, "What did your husband buy for you when you had your first child?"

The second woman replied "My husband sent me to charm school."

"Charm school!" the first woman cried "land sakes, child, what on Earth for?"

The second woman responded, "So that instead of saying ‘who gives a flying fuck, I learned to say, ‘Well, isn’t that nice’."
Avatar 5:07pm Brian in UK:

One of Fred's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm David D:

That is indeed a charming joke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm David D:

Who is Fred?
Avatar 5:09pm glenn:

fred eaglesmith. dude of awesomeness.
Avatar 5:10pm Brian in UK:

David I am tempted. Proper forest.

What Glenn writ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Stanley:

This is particularly nice,.
Avatar 5:14pm northguineahills:

@glenn: As someone who grew up in the South and has had many Brit/Commonwealth friends, once I get a few lagers/drams in me, I have mad banter skills.....que simpatico!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm David D:

Cabbage crates over the briny?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm David D:

Sorry, I always think of that Python sketch when I think of banter.
Avatar 5:22pm glenn:

banter up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm David D:

Yes, my banter is a bit out of practice, I'm afraid.
Avatar 5:29pm northguineahills:

@David D: HA!!!
Avatar 5:31pm Brian in UK:

Good sounds
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm David D:

About to take a slight turn or two...
Avatar 5:44pm Brian in UK:

I think most supporters of a team will tell you that it is the hope that gets you ever time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm David D:

Wait till next year is the perennial cry of that hope.
Avatar 5:50pm glenn:

go crystal palace go!
Avatar 5:50pm glenn:

or whatever crystal palace supporters chant.
Avatar 5:53pm Sem:

This has been a lovely musical ride, my stop is next, so I'll say thank you, David, and good night to you, and all. Next time, then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Stanley:

'night Sem. Me too, it's 11pm here so....time for bed.
Thanks David.
  6:02pm Doug Schulkind:

Greetings fellow passengers, and cheers to you, Cap’n David!
Avatar 6:04pm northguineahills:

There are enough WFMU conflicts as there are, but I have to pick b/tn Meghan and Jeff!
Avatar 6:05pm northguineahills:

@glenn: That's assuming CP supporters exist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm David D:

Good night Sem and Stanley - thanks for riding!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm David D:

Greetings Doug! And sorry, NGH, didn't realize I what I was stumbling into.
Avatar 6:10pm northguineahills:

*Looks at the comments board* See glenn, proved my point!
Avatar 6:10pm Brian in UK:

@ngh oh his they do exist and come from Sarf Lunnon.
Avatar 6:11pm glenn:

there has to be c.p. supporters.
Avatar 6:12pm northguineahills:

Just bringin my footy banta to the table....
Avatar 6:12pm Brian in UK:

@ngh is it really necessary to put a worm in Mezcal?
Avatar 6:14pm northguineahills:

Brian in UK: no, it's just for the tourists and branding purposes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm David D:

Footy - Leipzig - controversy!
Avatar 6:15pm northguineahills:

vu iz meyn klezmer?

keynmol, ikh hern es vider!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm David D:

One more time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm doctorjazz:

Back for a bit, man, busy at work, nice sounds (in time for the Klezmer).
(my mom had The Barry Sisters albums, and played them to death).
Avatar 6:17pm northguineahills:

I'm currently a Dortmund supporter (I support whatever side has someone who by accident of birth, or other circumstances has a US passport). In the 80s-90s it was lonely being a footy supporter/player stateside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm David D:

NGH: Cosmos in the 70s - you weren't alone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm David D:

Welcome back Doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm David D:

I have yet to adopt another team, though, so I guess it will probably never happen.
Avatar 6:22pm northguineahills:

I saw the Cosmos in 1982 in Jacksonville when I was 6. My team played a mini-game during halftime. (I also got to represent the US at the U-14 championships in Japan in 1989. We finished 19 out of 21! (we beat the USSR 2-1, lost to Brazil 16-0, Argentina 14-1, Japan 7-2, and Sweden 5-1. But we got a football clinic from the Brazilian senior team, I will never forget that!
Avatar 6:26pm northguineahills:

The Soviet keeper was a badass, but that game was the only pride we scrapped together in that tourney.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm David D:

Wow, that is amazing! Are there any videos of the games?
Avatar 6:32pm northguineahills:

My parents might have some if they still exist on VHS (outside of the USSR game, it was a really a humiliating affair). I still have the uniform in their attic somewhere.
Avatar 6:33pm Brian in UK:

What a trip. Those memories are close by.
For some reason I support Wolverhampton Wanderers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm David D:

Sure, but what an experience and honor!
Avatar 6:34pm northguineahills:

I dig the Wolves, kickass name!
Avatar 6:36pm Brian in UK:

Did you play against Ronaldo?
Avatar 6:36pm northguineahills:

Yeah,, those scores are tattooed into my brain, as I knew I'd probably never be on such a stage ever again (it was before the USSF got their shit together. They showed up w/ just 15 players, and needed another 8. I made the tryouts [I was living in Japan at the time] and somehow made the starting 11 as sweeper)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm David D:

That is just incredible, NGH. Must have been like a dream.
Avatar 6:39pm northguineahills:

I always thought that Ronaldo may have been on the Brazilian team, as he was my age, but I honestly don't know. I just remember the Brazilian keeper had a mustache (U-14). I do remember the players from the Brazilian senior team (who were there to play the Japanese senior team.
Avatar 6:41pm northguineahills:

Of course, I didn't hear of Ronaldo until 5 years later at the USA WC '94.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm David D:

I guess interest in the WC will unfortunately be down in the US this year.
Avatar 6:42pm Brian in UK:

Used to love watching him charge through the middle of the field.
Avatar 6:43pm Brian in UK:

Qatar will be real hot spot for World Cup Fever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm David D:

Yikes another abrupt ending.
Avatar 6:45pm northguineahills:

@Brian in UK. I've watched every WC game since the US broadcast every game in '98. That just means more bar room for me. (I used to sleep in Thompkins Sq Park in b/tn games in 2002 around 4am, and get to grad school at 10am). I fell asleep that year during the second half w/ friends at his apt as we are were just so wiped out from watching every game. I'm not going to stop watching now!
Avatar 6:46pm northguineahills:

I've never heard that Don Cherry, thanks! (He's an inspiration to me!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm David D:

Yes, he was amazing!
Avatar 6:49pm northguineahills:

The WC '98 final, I was driving back from a rave in Miami (and all of the chemicals that came w/ that experience), decided to pull off I-95, found an Irish bar, asked if they were showing the final. They said yes. Took a nap on Jupiter Beach, came in to watch the game, and the owner was so surprised a yank would make so much effort to watch it, he gave me a free meal and a free pint. Vive La France!
  6:49pm Ike:

I'm on a shuttle bus and this is good for blocking/drowning out the fucking oldies station, so thanks. (But did you just cut out?)
Avatar 6:50pm Brian in UK:

I did see England win on the TV in 1966.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi David I've been out but will catch up on the archive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm David D:

Hey Ike, you may be right, hope it wasn't a long break.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Webhamster Henry:

On "Rutles Highway Revisited", Tuli Kupferberg covers Living In Hope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm David D:

Thanks Henry, gotta look for that!
Avatar 6:55pm Brian in UK:

Thanks David.
Avatar 6:55pm northguineahills:

@Brian: I've seen the film clips, I know who Bobby Moore and Jack Charlton are, does that count?
Avatar 6:56pm northguineahills:

The GTDS stream has had technical difficulties all day. Just a day in the life....
Avatar 6:58pm northguineahills:

Thanks David! And I just finished my maps, I can leave work at 7!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm David D:

Thanks everyone! Stay tuned...
