Live performance and chat with Barbez (John Bollinger: drums /Daphna Naftali: vocals /Dan Kaufman: guitar /Peter Hess: clarinet /Danny Tunick: vibes /Peter Lettre: bass)

On their latest project, "For Those Who Came After: Songs of Resistance from the Spanish Civil War," the Chamber-Rock ensemble Barbez cover vintage Anti-Fascist anthems. Barbez liberally incorporates avant-rock, contemporary classical, cumbia and flamenco styles to refresh anthems like “L’Internationale” (The International) and “Viva la Quince Brigada” (Long Live the Fifteenth Brigade). Bandleader Dan Kaufman is also a journalist. who has written extensively on the Spanish Civil War for The New York Times, The Nation, and The New York Observer. Over the course of that reporting he got to know many veterans of the Lincoln Brigade, inspired by their story enough to come up with this musical tribute. Barbez played some of these anthems live on WFMU

Hi Mr. Dobalina and Jake! It's Django Reinhardt's birthday, so I figured it would be a nice start to the show.

Hi- This is just an elegant sonic place. I'm in rapture from Tommy Johnson's blues previously and then YOU! Yes, I finally paid off my pledge to your program from last spring... Maybe 'should do it earlier.

Me too. Perrudin's "heliotrope" was jaw dropping good. And stuck around for Barbez and not disappointed.

Anti-fascism, good cause. Martin Bisi has done some great albums.

el Garee le Bee~:

With Barbez I feel like I should salute, march and sing in spanish or something in my studio... and I'm trying to rewire/re-route things here. Well, onward companeros! Very close to the Cuban cause.

TDK60:

Yes, the anarcho-syndicalists of Catalonia were very well-organized. See Orwell's Homage To Catalonia.

Irene Trudel:

Thanks el Garee le Bee, Kamp Climax, adampsyche and TDK60. Yes, it does feel like we should be in a rally of some kind. But a nice homage to this music.

To me the politics is a simply a bonus. The important things is that its a different kind of blues. As essential as Mississippi Delta blues, just in a different context.

Well just grab onto the history, irony and imperialist motives of it all. As mentioned, this writer is very close, literally and politically to the Cubano cause. Oops. Too political. Sorry.
