If I can get a note from DJ for comment carryover: I saw Yes twice in the mid-70s. Good both times. About a year ago, in a passing music discussion, someone stepped up and said “Ugh...Yes, ELP...” then made a gesture, the abbreviation for which is the same as for Jerry Orbach. Then she summed up the fans with a scoff, “You know, the ‘boys.’” I was amused and indignant at the broad rude rash dismissal. Hey, that’s components of my teen soundtrack yer kickin’ to the curb there.

Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
doctorjazz:

He did "standards" in the early bands with Buell Neidlinger, some originals; Unit Structures had him taking it "all outside", though there was still composition and structure. I don't hear early Ornette as fully free-he dropped the chord instrument, played over bar lines, but had a Texas R & B groove running through his early music (which never went away). The tunes are quite hummable. The Pulse was very steady.

Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
doctorjazz:

He's not an easy listen. I've told this story on a chat board here once or twice, but I'll tell it again. He was playing in the Village, NYC (club that was short lived). The times used to feature a concert with a write up, and went on about how Taylor had changed his style, he now had softer passages, and had "mellowed". I went to the show, there was a line around the block, figured I'd never get in, but got on the line. Turned out, people kept leaving the show and seats kept opening up. The Times was right; there were louder, bombastic parts of the show, and softer moments...but the softer sections were as dissonant as the louder ones (the Times had a lot of influence in those days). Was a great show, eventually got to sit in front, when those people left.

Without getting into a debate about theory and such, I gotta say that "free" is a bit of a misnomer, since no human performance/expression/behavior is entirely so. "Free" has a metaphorical force we value, and rightly so, but it isn't an accurate measure.

Wikipedia, a good piece on Free Jazz: “The true beginning of free jazz as it is understood today, however, came with the recordings of Ornette Coleman. Coleman pioneered many techniques typical of free jazz, most notably his rejection of pre-written chord changes, believing instead that freely improvised melodic lines should serve as the basis for harmonic progression in his compositions.” etc.

I think Ornette was the “father”, and Taylor took it way farther.

Tristano, in the same article: “While free jazz is widely considered to begin in the late 1950s, there are compositions that precede this era that have notable connections to the free jazz aesthetic. Some of the works of Lennie Tristano in the late 1940s, particularly "Intuition", "Digression", and "Descent into the Maelstrom" exhibit the use of techniques associated with free jazz, such as atonal collective improvisation and lack of discrete chord changes.“

What is the most important question in music? And what is the answer to that question?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm

We'll see UM in the noontide (no one would think I speak English as my native language, I swear)

(i'll be outside working during our Uncle's show, unless there's still snow on the ground tomorrow afternoon)

Of course I would start playing jazz as soon as docjazz left the room...

Hurry up, still here, I'll get ready in my jammies while you play it...like this Haider track, by the way.

Buenos noche oche had a nice ring, ngh!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
coelacanth∅:

no not really! if you mean "about music" then the only thing i can come up with is "do you like it?" yes? then it's good music.

The question is “what song is it that you want to hear?”

oh -haha!

And the second most important question in music is “do you feel like we do?”
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
coelacanth∅:

oh, wait a cottin'pickin' minit he-ya! is that video for freebird?!
(i know the 2nd question is from a Peter Frampton song)
  11:41pm
Doctorjazz:

Whole Lotta Lateef tonight, Flash started with a nice set.

You could cue up both of those songs if you were an overnight DJ and have nearly 40minutes which came in handy if your girlfriend visited you at 3am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
northguineahills:

DJ Bryce: Challenge accepted! *cues 3 hour + track*

(it's happened before, he only interrupted for the legal station ID)
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
coelacanth∅:

i'll be honest. i never want to hear freebird...at least not by lynard skynard. if it comes on the radio, i turn it off. if someone plays it at the pub, i leave (maybe just for a while)
...never.
i could cue up rattlesnake shake by fleetwood mac and then bitches brew and do just as well!
  11:47pm
still b/p:

Discussed with friend musician who hates the yukster’s yelled Freebird request how we should do alt versions of it in (penalty) extended response— e.g. as an overwrought Irish ballad — and see how they like it then, yeahhhh.
  11:48pm
Anthony:

Those are good choices.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
coelacanth∅:

i'm down with versions. (well, not if Eric Clapton does it!)
  11:49pm
Anthony:

NGH DJ Bryce?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
northguineahills:

I have the live version of freebird on vinyl, it's almost 18 minutes long.. And yes, I dj it (w/ in the same show where I play Xenakis, Merzbow, and Richie Hawtin). I like to draw in an repulse the same crowds and challenge what they think they like about sound (and I enthusiastically love all of my choices, I don't do irony).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Little Danny:

Never have "Free Bird" and "Free Jazz" been argued so passionately alongside each other!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
northguineahills:

@Anthony: Yeah, WFMU dj Bryce who plays Fridays on the mothership noon to 3pm EDT).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
northguineahills:

(if you think Fabio is outre, then comes Bryce)
  11:52pm
Anthony:

And during your show! You ought to tell the listeners what they are missing.
  11:52pm
Dean:

I don't quite get the aversion to "Free Bird." How is it any different than the gazillions of overplayed pop tunes we pretend to admire?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
northguineahills:

@LD: I have passion for both Free Jazz and FreeBird, you have no idea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
Little Danny:

NGH: There was way more overlap in that Venn diagram amongst tonight's listeners than I'd ever believed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm

Cool show Danny, although it went in a flash. Hope those Marfa jackrabbits give you right of way until we next meet.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
coelacanth∅:

Dean, it's just bad. the lyrics are juvenile and the jam is predictable and boring.
  11:55pm
Anthony:

The aversion is due to the lamest joke you can try at a gig. Some dude thinks it’s funny to yell Freebird while Sonic Youth plays. What would be really punk rock would be Sonic Youth playing Freebird! To that request.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
coelacanth∅:

gnight ngh
  11:56pm
Dean:

@coelacanth∅, Yes, of course. But I repeat, "How is it any different than the gazillions of overplayed pop tunes we pretend to admire?"
  11:57pm
Dean:

Frankly, I'd prefer "Free Bird" to Sonic Youth, but that's just me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
northguineahills:

@coel: You don't understand the misinterpretation of the usual rednecks of Freebird. It is all about irony of loving the South. The fact that people ate it up, just gave them bread (I've hung out w/ the drummer, Artemis Pyle).
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
coelacanth∅:

no that's not the aversion. it's because it's a 1/2 decent band's lame attempt to out-jam Neil Young when they really didn't have it in 'em.
  11:58pm
Anthony:

NGH exactly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
northguineahills:

(and yes, Ronnie Van Zant was huge Neil Young fan.)
  11:58pm
Anthony:

I think it takes a “hip”southerner to understand that.
  11:58pm
Dean:

(I don't like Neil Young, either.)
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
coelacanth∅:

so,ngh, i should read the lyrics.
i will do that; but i still think what i do about the jam. uninspired.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 12:00am
coelacanth∅:

and Dean, i don't know what songs people pretend to admire. i don't pretend to admire anything. i promise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am

(they were against segregation, they were against racism).

@Dean: see the manufactured 'feud' btn Neil Young fans and Skynyrd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am

and that Ronnie was buried in a Neil Young tee shirt....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am
