This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

As always, I've arrived here by accident. Stepped on the wrong trap door or something. Serendipity doo-dah.

Prabha Devi: Hahah. Welcome! Your being your cheerfull self as always!
Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

I think so, Brian. I lost my notes on that particular image but it's definitely British Romantic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Passaic River Blues:

Is this Haitian? Not half bad.
Avatar 7:14pm Sadhu Sadhu:

If Moahaha was here this would be a complete DW take over. I guess hes home from that pop quiz now...

Beautifull track that taste of honey

I came up with this via the Googe:

"Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797): "The Eruption of Vesuvius", 1774"

Evan: Looking forward to recive it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Passaic River Blues:

You can't go wrong with this album.
Avatar 7:25pm Flash Strap:

it's seriously so good, but it's really hard to pull it out and not cue up Minotaur
Avatar 7:25pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Evan: I think the last time I asked, you were in the middle of moving, so bad timing from our part
Avatar 7:26pm hyde:

@sadhu hello! good to see you around.
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

nothing is ever well-timed in this life, alas
Avatar 7:26pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Hyde: Likewise. Been ages!
Avatar 7:26pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Evan: True that. :/
  7:27pm Prabha Devi:

Yes! Nice one. We look forward to it. In the meantime we are trying to keep the old flame burning in our own way.
Avatar 7:30pm Little Danny:

Ha. The "thunder" effect on Thomas's Lowery organ
Avatar 7:31pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Little Danny: Its BEAUTIFUL. :D
Avatar 7:32pm Little Danny:

Oh I agree!
Avatar 7:32pm Little Danny:

@Flash: Lovely segue into this Cowley
Avatar 7:32pm Sadhu Sadhu:

haha. Good. i absolutely love it
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

That Timmy Thomas is an anytime LP for me
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

picked this Cowley up the other day and did the classic thing of playing it at the wrong speed and liking it better that way – now we can all share in my preference
  7:34pm Prabha Devi:

Speed kills
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Passaic River Blues:

As many times as I've heard the song "Why Can't We Live Together" (has to be hundreds by this point), I've never heard that cut before and it was fantastic.
  7:34pm Prabha Devi:

;-)
Avatar 7:35pm Little Danny:

Ah that's such a great theme to mine, Evan. I did the same with a 45 copy of Ravi Shankar's jazzy "Fire Night" years ago
Avatar 7:36pm Flash Strap:

@PRB: the whole LP is just so good. maybe my #1 version of First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, of all things. Also, "Cold, Cold People"
Avatar 7:36pm northguineahills:

Loved the Hyman! Busy doing lab work (this all new to me).
Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

whoa that sounds really good, LD – you should do a show of slows
Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

hi NGH!
Avatar 7:38pm Little Danny:

This pitch-altered Cowley certainly brings out its Moroder-ness
Avatar 7:38pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Passaic River Blues: Compliments on your choise of avatar. Thats a beutiful album!
Avatar 7:38pm Little Danny:

Your Show of Slows
Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

I'll second that, Sadhu
Avatar 7:39pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@flash. Ever heard Dress you up with my love by madona at 33? 10000x better than the original
Avatar 7:40pm Prabha Devi:

You should check out Al Lovers mixtape on DW where he put lots of 60s stuff through some effects.. not an expert so don't know what it was but it sounded cool. Its called Purgatory Blues
Avatar 7:40pm Flash Strap:

@LD, re: Moroder - definitely. a lot of that Muscle Up and School Daze Cowley is actually just tracks he recorded and later slowed down for atmospheric effect, so it's really very Cowley all the way
Avatar 7:40pm Flash Strap:

Will do, Prabha, sounds excellent
Avatar 7:40pm Prabha Devi:

And BTW... someone played a Radiohead song at the wrong speed and it ALMOST sounded good...
Avatar 7:42pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Prabha: Well, that effect got a bit tiering after a while... Was nice ffor the first 20 minutes. But hes a celebrity, so anything goes. haha
Avatar 7:42pm hyde:

this is cracking me up because ca. 1982 i had a Material 12" that i played at 33 for years even tho i eventually found it was a 45
Avatar 7:43pm Sadhu Sadhu:

hyde: haha. I really cant listen to Dress you up at normal speed after hearing it at 33. Guess its the same for Material girl. Madonas voice even sound better at that speed.
Avatar 7:43pm Prabha Devi:

Haha.. true. But some of the songs were NICE
Avatar 7:44pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Prabha: Defenitely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Passaic River Blues:

@Flash Strap: I will have to investigate then.

@Sadhu: Thank you. It really is wondrously beautiful. Young went far too soon.
Avatar 7:46pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Passaic River Blues: in deed!
Avatar 7:47pm hyde:

down with rigor
Avatar 7:48pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Reminds me to hunt down more Larry Young albums. I only have 2 i think

Avatar 7:50pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Why?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm chresti:

I am organ nerd!
Avatar 7:53pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Evan: Speeking of speed. Didnt you do a full mixtape that was only slowed down tunes? Or was it a full album that you just slowed down years back?
Avatar 7:53pm Prabha Devi:

He said Haitan
Avatar 7:54pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Prabah: Hhahaha. True, true. Man i miss traveling. Damnit.
Avatar 7:54pm Sadhu Sadhu:

98% sure that im canceling my US trip this summer too. :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm chresti:

I also like slowed down, warped tunes
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

@Sadhu: I did 2 mixes of slowed down exotica tunes a while back, yeah
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

also slowed down the better part of Lalo Schifrin's Black Widow LP
Avatar 8:00pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Yes. Black Widow. Thats the one i was thinking of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm doctorjazz:

OK, my time to hit the road, catch you in the car, thanks, Flash!
Avatar 8:00pm Prabha Devi:

I feel rather slowed down at the moment, but thats the wine
Avatar 8:00pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Bye Doc!
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

safe and very pleasant journeys, Doc!
Avatar 8:01pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Prabha: I could use a bottle of wine myself...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm melinda:

hola!
Avatar 8:02pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Evan: What was the two mixes of slowed down exotic you did? I was shure i had all your mixes. Maybe i just didnt notice that they were slowed down...
Avatar 8:02pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Hey Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Passaic River Blues:

@Sadhu: you're right that there are a ton. I am pretty indiscriminate--like Blue Note to the cheesiest fusion stuff. "Lawrence of Newark" is my favorite and next in line is probably Tony Williams' Lifetime's "Emergency".
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

Should have noted this in the break: all of side A is Lecuona compositions (which is what we're hearing)

side B does all the hits, Hawaiian War Chant, Caravan...
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda! welcome!

@Sadhu: they're called Exotiste and Exotiste Vol. II
Avatar 8:05pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Ai. They are all slowed down. Ive had those mixes since you posted them one million years ago. haha. But i havent listened to them in ages. wow. I need to listen to them again
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

whoops!
  8:06pm slawooy:

Checking in. I’m all ears!
Avatar 8:07pm Prabha Devi:

@Prabha maybe your computer is just really fast?
Avatar 8:07pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Evan: Guess i didnt notice cause your mixes was my first propper voyage into exotica, so i didnt know most of those tracks at the time
Avatar 8:07pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Prabha: It IS!
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

Hi there Slawoooy!
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

Plas Johnson on sax for this LP, so good
Avatar 8:11pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Passaic River Blues: While I really have been enjoying Lawrenc of Newark, Ive never gotten around to check out that much else he did. I only have Unity and Larry Young's Fuel which i cant remember much of, so I guess they didnt leave that much of an impression. But i should definitely check out more of his stuff.

Avatar 8:13pm Sadhu Sadhu:

chresti: There's a volcano about to erupt in Hawaii?
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

@Chresti: no, but it can be now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm chresti:

I heard it on the news-there were several small earthquakes there, recently.
Avatar 8:16pm Flash Strap:

that's cool in theory but i hope everyone i gonna be ok
Avatar 8:16pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Like just now? Was nothing on the news here (in good old Norway) at 23.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm chresti:

Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

very excellent mix of stuff from the Crown label by our own Little Danny, highly highly recommended: officenaps.com...
Avatar 8:20pm Prabha Devi:

I'm currently travelling in Tirana, Albania and we didn't hear anything. Although right now the aforementioned wine has spun its silky web and I shall surrender to the sleep reserved only for the wicked or the rich. I am neither. Thanks for tonight!
Avatar 8:20pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Oh. I guess Norwgian news don't find it important enough to report. hmmm. i'll go see if i can find anything on it.
Avatar 8:21pm Flash Strap:

btw that last track, Kapu, is about a volcano. so there's somethin'
Avatar 8:21pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Sweet dreams Prabha. Catch you tomorrow.

I don't think i'd heard anything on that mix before but the Kapu stuff. I have two versions of Kapu, but I know there's at least three. The other one on I have on Crown is called Exotic Percussion. both have very good cover art
Avatar 8:27pm Little Danny:

@Sadhu: thanks, and thanks, and thanks! It's more or less permanently on hiatus, but I do keep all of the MP3s available
Avatar 8:29pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Little Danny: Also nice that you keep them as separate mp3s. Never been a big fan of those massive single file mixes.

This Adderley is great and totally new to me. Definitely a different mode than his contemporaneous soul jazz stuff
Avatar 9:07pm Flash Strap:

i would kill to see that tour documentary. I guess they all fell in love with her. the live album from that time is all the proof you need that she was really an incredible artist – she hits all those notes live, does all those rapid changes, live!

Avatar 9:15pm hyde:

good stuff
Avatar 9:19pm Flash Strap:

This is such cool album. I bought this and about 40 soviet LPs from a guy for a dollar. Was worth it just for the Blue Moses but I later sold one of the 10" soviet records for a pretty penny as they say

or a "hefty doubloon" if you prefer, and you may lay to that
Avatar 9:21pm Flash Strap:

still stuck with the other 39 soviet records though...

enough schlager and then some
Avatar 9:22pm Flash Strap:

this whole record is TNT though, truly. Randy Weston got on a roll there for a while
