This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

all beach boys is good or at least defensible until 1980 and that's my opinion

early stuff is god-tier but so is the post-SMiLE early 70s albums, which might be the most interesting run of american pop LPs, ever. don't sleep on wild honey, friends, 20/20, smiley smile, etc. DON'T SLEEP

i don't really care very much for that era tbh, which i know we've talked about a million times over now. i will go on the record & say that love you is amazing even though no one else i've talked to seems to think so

Aloha Flash Strap, welcome back! Returning to your exotica roots, eh? Everyone needs to start giving a hard time to bartenders who don't make proper mai-tais.
Avatar 8:46pm

Hi there illustrious Mr. Fab!

I recently went to a bar where the bartender has sort of a reputation for making good tiki drinks, and they asked me what I'd like, and I basically said the only classic tiki drink I don't really care for is the Mai Tai – which is true – so this motherfucker made me a Mai Tai

Good news / bad news a while back when ordering a mai tai bowl with friends during late night Rock ‘N Roll Sushi specials. It was cheap but without much noticeable liquor. So don’t need or want to be pulling full-hit booze through a straw into the system as the night’s final-hour choice, but then even at a discount....what’s the point?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm
Franco Twinkie:

Back in my drinkin' days, I would stop in at the Tiki Ti in East Hollywood on the way home from work. My goal was to have every drink on the menu at least once. After awhile I came to conclusion that most tiki drinks were about the same...Or the bartender was really lousy!

@MRF: whenever I finally make it out to LA, you should take me to the Tonga Hut and show me the ropes

MrFab:

The ropes, the nets, the pufferfish - you got it Flashy, would be my pleasure.

i've barely scratched the surface, somehow, of tiki drinks. i used to drink mai tais -somewhere, i don't remember then i tried a planters punch and thought it was almost the same but better...then i started drinking meyer's rum with just ginger ale.
...i'd like to try a coco loco right now though.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
melinda:

Taste of Honey is another favorite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
coelacanth∅:

i prefer the instrumental versions over most or all the sung versions i've heard.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
melinda:

@hyde that is totally cool
Avatar 9:38pm
Flash Strap:

@Hyde: agree with Melinda, that is really cool
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
melinda:

I first heard Herb's version but I might like Peggy Lee's better. Before we knew the real lyrics my sister made up a few of her own, it was funny.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
Uncle Michael:

I actually first learned this as "the matzo manufacturers ball". "I'll be down to get ya in a push cart, Rifka..."
Avatar 9:40pm
Flash Strap:

@C.: the cool thing about a planter's is that it can be basically just equal parts lime, sugar, rum. Some recipes add tea. I have my own that ups the rum slightly, uses darker sugar, and adds coconut water instead of tea or whatever. i guess it's totally different at that point, but it's a fun recipe to customize
Avatar 9:40pm

UM: oh man that is hilarious
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm

hahaha UM!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:42pm

My uncle sang it that way...wouldn't be surprised if it's a Mickey Katz thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm
coelacanth∅:

Flash i don't even remember it! decades ago. but it was sweet and dark. i think it did have the tea.
Avatar 9:44pm
Flash Strap:

i have no idea the recipe but i also love the drink, Three Dots and a Dash

Mr. Fab, have you ever been to the Mai Kai? you'd love it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm

melinda i heard Alpert's version first for sure, as a child - watching the dating game!

Avatar 9:47pm

yeah Jungle Bird is a great sort of later-era tiki drink invented in some Malyasian hotel if i remember correctly. served with an orchid. verry delicious, easy to make (minus the orchid)

One of my favorite recordings.

Colin Blunstone's voice is magic

The Mai Kai's in Florida, isnt it? Ive heard the myths and legends but have never visited that state. Seeing as how I'm usually in the state of delirium (boom, tish!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
coelacanth∅:

i used to love the music played (all by Herb Alpert) on the dating game and the newlywed game when i was little. -specific songs for each event. (entree of the bachelorette, etc...)
Avatar 9:48pm
hyde:

the Jungle Bird is great and its great benefit is that it's fairly simple
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm

i really have a problem with the zombies' version of summertime.
...it's too short.
